This movie surprised me. I wasn't expecting much, however, it delivered. It somehow manages to be funny and scary in different beats. A lot of great actors, and some impressive CGI. I don't like watching predictable horror movies and this was the opposite of that. I'd recommend it to any horror buff.

Richard A. Cole
2.0 out of 5 starsA waste of talent and time
Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2019
This film had a great deal of talented actors. It is a shame the writing/script was sophomoric and disjointed. The film starts out as a "Ghost hunter" flick, then goes in so many different directions, you can't figure out what it is about. The story is all over the place, inconsistent and simply goes off the rails. At the end, one doesn't have a clue what it was about. The acting, though good at places, just gets worse as the movie goes on. The reaction to seeing a member of your team die, is weak, and not how one would act in real life. Or real acting... To see someone get their necks ripped open, would freak anyone out. Not here. Then it just gets more confusing and idiotic as time goes on. Why are cast members being killed? No context, no reason and a waste. Many hot women in the movie, but no nudity from any of the beautiful women. Too bad.
The end is just bizarre. Someone digging up the ground, then someone sits next to her like they were old friends and chat about old times. What? They tell the entire movie plot in 5 minutes, and you are still scratching your head.
The security chick was over played with bad attitude. But what tuff chick isn't over acted with attitude? BTW, Being a bitch to everyone doesn't make you a bad ass chick. And the cop, just shows up and doesn't question anyone, and doesn't get backup? She just goes along as if she is a member of the Ghost hunter team. So much was simply patches of dialogue, within a cut and paste storyline.
And Tom Sizemore, a great actor who has had issues in the past. I see him in a great deal of crappy, straight to video stuff. Is he still sober? Who did he piss off to get offered so many bad scripts? I'm not sure if his acting is below par because his talent went away with his drug issues, or its bad because he is only offered sub standard parts/scripts. That is the saddest part of the whole crappy movie. As someone who has been sober for over 30 years, it saddens me to see that Tom has to struggle to get a part worthy of his talent, and his effort to get and stay clean and sober.
Summary, hot and sexy women who never got to show their outer beauty, or their talent as actors. All the cast can act, but nobody did any in this trainwreck. The story was confusing, and too muddled to appreciate anything else.

2.0 out of 5 stars Initially has some promise, slips into ridiculousness and then sheer stupidity

If you just made a movie about telegenic ghost hunters faking hauntings for views until they get dragged into a real haunting... well, there are at least 15 other films with the same premise but a much better story line. Because there are extra characters that... are villains, but not the real villain, and that's not a real villain either, but everyone still alive at the end killed innocent people to get there, so maybe they are all villains. So they are ghosts, but corporeal, except when they don't want to be, and can come back from being killed - well, some of them, anyway... and they are all the same person despite being different ages? Did I get that right? Even the living one is presumably 100 years old? No? Not anymore? None of this works. Just crazy nonsense, and if the people in the film don't seem to care when their supposed friends are killed, why should we? Triggers: threats of rape/incest, non-consensual/mind control impregnation off screen, some bloody violence, outright brain-numbing stupidity. No nudity, though, which is strange for something labeled NC-17 or uncut. The actors seem like they'd be good in something else, so blame the director and the writer -- who are, shocker, the same person.

*Spoilers if anyone cares. (You shouldn't).

Hell Girl has a good premise, but ultimately, it falls short in too many areas, laying low the entire film. The positives are the film is generally cast well, but the script sucks. You can see there is talent among the main crew but with the way this script is written and how the film progresses, that potential isn't realized. Let's start with Jedidiah (Tom Sizemore) who may be the most recognizable person in the film. I know he's in the doghouse in Hollywood for his most recent transgressions but Tom proved he still has the skills in the bathroom scene when Lindsay (Kherington Payne) is in the tub. Sitting there reveling in his plans as he's about to rape Lindsay, his demonic daughter, I could see Jedidiah as a demon overlord even though he's out of shape with a gut. But just like every other scene in the film that starts off good, something happens that screws it up. In this case, Jedidiah goes from being the creepy demon overlord to whining like a typical henchman with cheesy lines that didn't fit his character from a moment prior when Lindsay slits her wrists and bleeds out in front of him. Don't even get me started on how he's defeated. The less said about that dumpster fire scene the better.

What's worse is that the film isn't even consistent with its own lore. If Jedidiah is a powerful demon trying to fill the world with his demonic offspring, how could he NOT know that killing them makes them stronger? Laura (Tara Westwood) spent over a century killing those impregnated/infected by Jedidiah after being infected herself which was pissing Jedidiah off. But those she dispatched didn't come back stronger than before? Laura was a prostitute when Jedidiah paid to sleep with her over a century prior, yet when she committed suicide, she came back. Why not the others? Why not Nikki (Lauren Compton) who was pregnant with Jedidiah's kid when she was killed. It just didn't make sense or maybe I just missed something.

Other issues that didn't sit well with me is that the other supporting characters ended up being nothing more than a waste of time. Fodder for the beast. Charity (Masha Malinina) slaughtered almost the entire group at will and the reactions to each death by the rest of the crew is totally unrealistic. As an example the group watches as Charity grabs the leader of the group and rips his throat out in one vicious bite and the reaction is basically like "wow, that sucks." Instead of calling it in, trying to get help or getting out of dodge, their solution is to go "get" the little demon girl? Let's keep this in the proper perspective. A little girl who looks to be no older than maybe 10 or 11 just yanked a grown man off of a porch and ripped his throat out but somehow Zoe the security specialist (Diana Lu) thinks she's going to be able to beat this little girl into submission or worse? At that point in the film they all KNEW something super natural was going on. The only cop that bothered to show up to the location earlier in the film goes with Zoe to get Charity and guess what happens to them? They get brutally murdered for their troubles. It was asinine.

Yeah, 2*. Only because I generally liked the cast and the idea behind the premise, but absolutely hated the way it progressed and how it ended.

This movie is exactly what one would expect from a late-career Tom Sizemore movie. If you're okay with that, throw it on in the background.
