Astonishing documentary about a brilliant mind and writer I knew little about
Verified purchase
After having watched most of Wallander (but not having read the novels), watched this documentary about Henning Mankell, the author of the books the series is based on, and it was a masterpiece. Drawn primarily from an interview near the end of Mankell's life, in 50 minutes you learn a lot about the incredible mind, openness, generosity, and creative process of Mankell. It leaves you with a few more questions than answers, but much like the Wallander series, the direction and cinematography are impeccable. The last scene won't leave your mind anytime soon, nor will many of Mankell's incisive and creative takes on what makes us human, fallible, creative, and ultimately, narrative creatures.

Fine stuff!

I'm watching this totally backwards, because I watched seasons 2 and 3 on Netflix, but season 1 wasn't available so I streamed on Amazon Video. What a great show—very fine characters played with sensitivity and realism, like every character was written by Kierkegaard and the cinematography were Bergman. Much earthier than most US crime drama, and if you're put off by subtitles, you don't even notice them after a few minutes. As much as I loved seasons 2 and 3, season 1 may be even better. Highly recommended. In a sense, these could have been based on completely different literary characters from the version that Kenneth Branagh did for BBC/PBS. More carefully drawn, nuanced, than the later version. Episode 5 (The Mastermind) features a guest star - Michael Nyqvist - who had the lead role in the Swedish version of the Dragon Tattoo series. Chilling.

The best Wallander...
Verified purchase
Absolutely as good as if not better than the English versions of these. If you like this character, even with subtitles you owe it to yourself to try these. It's advanced, real-life Wallander. Great insight into the culture for anyone who's never spent time out of the US and easily worth watching for that alone. Pricing is not a bargain but you really get a lot for each episode. In some ways it's a more relaxed but much more poignant (awful word, sorry) Wallander, a superior look at the 'real' character with flaws that are less edgy-cool and way more honest. His daughter is outstanding and adds tremendously to the story.

Love, love, love
Henning Mankell's Wallander..... Was very pricey before Christmas, but the price came down considerably and so I couldn't resist purchasing and have NOT BEEN DISAPPOINTED. This show has brought laughter and tears and so much sadness that there's only 3 seasons...I highly recommend this series and all the wonderful acting and plots that come along with it. Kristen Henriksson is an outstanding actor and I know that my money was week spent, cause these shows will be watched and enjoyed, by me for YEARS to come Don't hesitate to add this series to your collection and enjoy EVERY exciting one.... You'll NOT BE SORRY!!!!

Great Series!

I watched the last episodes of series one and most of series two before finding the first episode of series one on Amazon. Although I enjoyed it, I felt that it wasn't as good as the subsequent episodes. This is probably because it was so expository in order to introduce the characters. The series is wonderful -- I highly recommend it. I'll be watching episode 2 (series one), also available on Amazon.

Good Swedish Mystery Show

I enjoyed this series because it doesn't bother me to read subtitles and closed captions. In fact, I started to attempt to learn a few of the words and phrases. I prefer to not watch DVDs if I can get streaming and so I was glad that this was offered.

We saw seasons 2&3 first. Watching season 1 helps us understand the Wallander of the later shows better, but so far (after 3 episodes of season 1), we prefer the later seasons. This is still very good, though, hence the 4 rating. I'd give the later seasons a 5.

The portrait of a man connected to all humanity

This is what you see in his writing. He is sad that he see less of this 'solidarity' with others in the lives we currently live.
