I am a sucker for any story involving Scottish Highland characters and settings. I stumbled onto this story while searching for a new Historical Romance book to read. The reviews were all mostly positive, so I decided to try this new author. I typically read Julie Garwood or Johanna Lindsey novels and this one seemed to fit right into the same category. This story was a page turner from the VERY beginning. I immediately fell in love with Marian (Mari) and Cam. Both characters were nothing but lovable. Mari with her tragic prior life, and Cameron with his genuinely "good guy" heart. Their love story unfolded beautifully and I couldn't put the book down. The story was heartbreaking at points and provoked both tears and laughter. This is one of those rare stories that focuses almost entirely on the main characters in the book without needless side plots invading on the main story. I loved that the author took us into the minds of both of the characters and we could see and feel their emotions as the story progressed. You won't be disappointed in this sweet, love story!

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it definitely won’t be the last. I LOVED it. I laughed and cried and laughed and cried some more. Cam is the war chief for the McKinkey clan where Mari’s sister is the wife of the laird. Mari is a fugitive fleeing to Scotland after killing her abusive husband. As the English tracker and his dogs are chasing her, she runs smack into Cam while he is working in the field. They pretend to be wed preventing her capture for a time. Neither wants to marry or love but they make the best of it. Of course they fall in love along the way. To protect the clan and those she loves Mari turns herself in to prevent and English attack on the clan. The story that follows shows the strength of true love.

4.5/5 stars. I was surprised by how much I liked this book—despite the quirky title, it definitely has heavy themes (though the darker parts happen off page). Marian and Cam’s relationship is well developed, and this historical romance has just the right amount of angst. Ms. Hanson gives good character development without unrealistic, flawless heroes and heroines. Cam and Marian are both stubborn, but their reasons aren’t unfounded, and I appreciate that they are a committed couple. Cam in particular is a refreshing historical romance hero compared to the rakes and scoundrels trope (he’s a total cinnamon roll, and that’s my jam-no pastry pun intended), and Marian is tragic but strong and determined. If you enjoyed The Highlander by Kerrigan Byrne and The Secret by Julie Garwood I think you’ll like this read.

While this book is part of the MacKinley Clan series, you can read it as a stand alone novel. This was my first Allison Hanson book but I look forward to more from her.

I love historical romances set in the Scottish Highlands, and this is a great story. The first chapter kicks off with lots of action. Marian/Mari and Cameron are a great pairing.

The middle portion of this book, while enjoyable, gets bogged down a bit. Their relationship grows along with gaining a better understanding of who each of the characters are and how they compliment each other. I loved the relationship between Mari and her sister.

The ending was good, but a little surprising. Overall this was an enjoyable read.

This book was a refreshing glass of lemonade on a hot sunny day. Initially I thought this would be a typical story where the reluctant hero and heroine meet, fight their attraction, fall in love, defeat the villain and triumph but it surprised me with an unexpected plot. It has the right amount of sizzle and romance without being too cheesy. I loved the characters, especially Cam. He was not an arrogant and domineering rake that reforms in the story, instead he was understanding, loyal and respectful of women. I loved the way he treated Marian and made her fall in love with him. Marian's character was a bit frustrating at times but I guess I can understand her reasoning. Overall, a very good read.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I have to say that I loved it! Without giving the storyline away, there were parts of the book that had me crying and other parts that had me chuckling. I very rarely cry when reading romance novels, so kudos to the author for bringing forth such strong emotions with her writing! The sad parts were so beautifully told, and the characters were so likable. I loved Cameron’s kindness and big heart and how he really understood Mari. I was also touched by Mari’s inner strength and goodness. The love between these two characters had me sighing.

Are we all agreed?

Because it’s just us, can I make a confession? Well, as you all know by now, I have a bit of an historical-romance-fiction-addiction going on. Yet, I generally steer clear of Scottish ones. “Why?”, you may ask. Well, this Scots girl has a bit of an aversion to the overabundance of doonas and kens that can be found in some historical stories.

I’m happy to report that there wasn’t a doona in sight, and although there was a sprinkling of kens, I was so absorbed in the story that I didn’t give them a second thought!

After living the last few years in her own personal hell, I loved watching Marian learn to live, love, and above all, trust once again. (*whispers* She didn’t hit the Duke hard enough in my opinion.)

A wife was never in Cameron’s plans. As the war chief for the Clan MacKinlay, he is a man laden with responsibilities and knows better than most how quickly a life can be cut short. Why risk your heart under such circumstances?

I’ve got one word for Cam - swoon! He may give off an air of ‘Don’t mess with me!’ but he is one rugged, gorgeous, gentle, caring specimen of man-mountain-deliciousness. Come on, can you imagine having that rumbling brogue whispering all sorts of naughty delights in your ear?...

Right? Hot AF!

Ah...

My heart was in my mouth towards the end of the story worrying if it was all going to work out. Honestly, I was doing my best Braveheart impersonation, ranting about those blasted English, and shouting ‘Freedom’ at the top of my lungs! Okay, I admit that my words were a bit bluer *shrugs*. I got caught up - it happens *blushes*.

This book was everything I love about historical romance. Cam and Mari’s story is full of drama, suspense, intrigue, passion, and love.

In short, I can’t wait for the next in the series!
