5.0 out of 5 starsDetective Terry Crosswhite Is Back In Seattle, and the Murder She Was Investigating Starts Up Again
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017
This novel starts with the heroine, Seattle Detective Tracy Crosswhite, giving a rookie shooting lessons so that she can pass her upcoming qualification test. Crosswhite and the rookie stay after the range closed. When finished, the rookie left. As Crosswhite policed the brass, she hears something and thinks she sees someone. After nothing more happening, she starts to leave and notices a hangman’s noose hanging on the fence. She immediately calls for backup. The reason for this response is that Crosswhite had led an investigation the death of an exotic dancer who was strangled with a noose. Before much progress could be made, she had to depart to go back to her childhood hometown for a hearing that led to the release of her sister’s convicted murderer (subject of the previous novel). While she was gone, her lieutenant sent the case to the Cold Case Unit. With the murder of another exotic dancer, the investigation becomes active again. From here, the novel takes off. The scope of the investigation quickly expands, and a Task Force is created with Crosswhite as the lead. She and her lieutenant have a rocky past, and it is not improving here. She lands herself in more hot water with the Office of Professional Accountability.

The B-story continues from the first book, and the reader learns more about the deepening relationship between Crosswhite and Dan O’Leary. Also woven quite naturally into the story is the relationship of Crosswhite with her team members including some detail into the outside life and tribulations of Vic Fazzio. If this is the first novel of this series that you are considering to read, so not worry, adequate background is provided so that reading the first novel is not a requirement.

As for language, there were only two F-bomb and a few lesser vulgar terms. There was not any graphic sex. The violence was all described in the past tense and in the context of the investigation except for one scene where the crime was described as it happened but the scene was more psychological vice gruesome. I do not believe that there is anything in these categories that would stop enjoyment in reading this novel.

The only issue that I had with this novel is not with the novel itself but with its cover. The murder weapon was a hangman’s noose tied with synthetic fiber that had left or Z twist. The knot on the book’s cover illustration appears to be a Stevedore’s stopper knot tied with a natural fiber that has a right or S twist. Why is the cover illustration so different from the murder weapon?

Overall, this novel like other novels of this series, this is the fourth that I have read, captured my interest. I found myself reading late into the night because I could not put this novel down. I did not have any issues with the novel itself. Overall, I rate this novel with five stars. If you like this series, do not miss this one.

2.0 out of 5 starsCannot believe the number of 4 & 5 star ratings for this book...
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2017
I bought 3 books in the Crosswhite series and cannot believe they have so many 4 and 5 star ratings. The BEST thing I can say about these books is that you can read/listen to them in any order and it doesn't matter. Each book tells a whole story from beginning to end so you don't need to follow a trail in this series. That's the ONLY good thing about them!

The reason you can read these books in any order is because these books tell the same story over and over again! Beautiful, young, female, top-notch detective investigating old cases involving missing women who end up dead. Each ends up being murder (of course) with wrongful prosecution and/or cause of death resulting from incompetent and corrupt law enforcement behind a shady cover up. The beautiful young detective is stalked by every crazed psychopath within a 100 mile radius...making me ponder if they'd run into each other a time or two while watching her through her bedroom window or at the local Starbucks...hey, maybe they met for coffee to watch her together!?!? In each book, our sharp little detective also trusts her gut instincts and puts together the tiniest of puzzle pieces to uncover the cover ups, solve the crime and bring justice to all...yet she misses the BIG things like a male being in her home while she's out and leaving the toilet seat up, her backyard motion detectors being tripped multiple times when she's home alone, a snow covered car with a clear windshield in multiple locations, her cat being locked outside of her "fortress" home when she knew he had been locked inside...these glaring clues, she shrugs off...so ridiculous. In each book, it is snowing or raining in each of her investigations as well so the detective and other characters are either brushing the snow from their faces or feeling the rain trickle down their backs. Despite the stories taking place in different places/settings, having different characters and different details about the murders and cover-ups, the tale unfolds exactly the same in every book making what I presume the author intended as plot twists so painfully predictable. You know those books that make you roll your eyes and blurt out, "Oh for goodness sakes." or something a little more colorful? Well, these are those books tenfold.

Additionally, the author fixates on specific words and phrases and repeats them over and over...bare light bulbs hanging overhead, the ability to complete a sex act in the time it takes to boil pasta, fending off the cat while trying to open a can of cat food and the word "glock"...never "her gun" or "her service weapon" or "her side arm"...always glock...and you'd be hard pressed to find one paragraph in any of these books that does not reference her glock. It's annoying enough to have to deal with all this repetition in a single book but, when it repeats in ALL of the books, it becomes intolerable.

I gave the first book, "My Sister's Grave" a 3 star because, as a stand alone, it would have been an average read. With regards to the other two books, I could not be nearly as forgiving or kind. Additionally, the reader in the audiobook is terrible at age and gender inflection. Ugh...

5.0 out of 5 stars Dugoni Scores Another Hit!
Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2017

Robert Dugoni lays all his talent on the line in this second book in the Tracy Crosswhite series. It's obvious he's an exceptionally gifted writer and no "one-hit wonder". Sequels or ongoing series often loose some momentum after the introductory story but definitely NOT in this case. This story may not be as emotionally charged as the first but I think that's based on the plot line rather than any weakness on the part of Mr. Dugoni. This is another well crafted work of fiction with deftly created, well defined characters, a complex storyline that keeps the reader intrigued throughout, and enough twists and turns to qualify as an amusement park roller coaster! The end is just as strong as the beginning and the ride doesn't slow down for a minute. So settle in with your beverage of choice, a comfortable chair with good lighting and dive into the world of crime that makes you forget that it's fiction and pulls you along this adventurous, exciting, frustrating and addictive series! It's fabulous!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Read, To Say The Least

I've become a big fan of Robert Dugoni over the past few couple of years or so, and as I read Her Final Breath, the second in the Tracy Crosswhite series, I once more found myself wishing that I had found Mr. Dugoni's work a long time ago, because I have a lot of catching up to do along with his new Tracy Crosswhite and Charles Jenkins novels each year. I absolutely love the writing exhibited herein, the characters (good, bad, or in between) whom are so real and well drawn through fast paced, taught prose. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, nor can I more highly recommend Her Final Breath and the work of Robert Dugoni.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Case Solved
Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2021

I chose this book series to read, since I enjoyed book 1, My Sister's Grave, so much. Dugoni's characters are well developed and realistic.
Tracy is the lead of a special taskforce that includes seasoned cops, her attorney boyfriend, an annoying reporter, as well as a jealous police captain.
Sharing a case file with her boyfriend strips her of the lead, disciplinary action from the OPA, and administrative desk duty. Her captain is assigned lead and arrests the wrong man again as the perpetrator of a series of murders of dancers at strip clubs.
She is not convinced that the right man has been apprehended. A random traffic stop by a young cop reaffirms her suspicions.
The last four chapters are a race against time to save another dancers life.
Pleasant and easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth delivery with several good plot twists

Tracy Crosswhite is such a strong and believable character! Once again impressed with how developments in the storyline were related in that they were dramatic but not overwhelmed by it. In the search for the serial killer, The Cowboy, Detective Crosswhite is bolstered by her colleagues and Dan, her love interest, and at the same time diminuted by her boss. This story has such a ‘real feel’ to how one would imagine the trajectory of such a case might evolve without getting bogged down in conjecture. The ending is satisfying without cliche. Cannot wait to read to the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Series!

I enjoyed the first book in the Tracy Crosswhite series, but I really loved this second one! Based on this book, the series promises to be exciting, thrilling, and intelligent. Tracy is a great character, with a nuanced internal dialog and a courageous exterior. It's hard to believe she was conceived and given life by a man. Dugoni has a knack for developing characters whose lives you care about. The situations are compelling, too. In many thrillers and mysteries, I guess the murderer or serial killer early on, but in this one, I was so fascinated by the action and diversions, that I didn't even bother to think about who it might be! I love to be so caught up in a story that I don't want to divert my attention even for a minute. This was that kind of book. I've now downloaded several more of this series, and will read them between other books of interest.

Yet another amazing book! This is the second of the series, both I’ve now read in just the last week. Her Final Breath was another great read. I think what I liked most was that when everything seemed all nice and tied up with a bow, the story wasn’t quite done, I had to finish and see how it was going to end. I also liked how the story was told from the viewpoint of the Killer in some parts, it kept you guessing until the end of who it was! You can definitely read this without having read My Sisters Grave, but that was just as good as this one. Can’t wait to now start In The Clearing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Robert is superbly written another great mystery.
Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2015

I love this book just like all of Robert's because he is talented. The book is fast paced, clear and precise direction of what Tracy does as a cop, homocide detective, and she's good, no great at her job. I love her as a character, and I love the fact she's a sharp shooter. Okay, so in this story Tracy and a team of detectives are put together to find the "cowboy", a serial killer of strippers. Tracy's Captain Nolasco has never liked Tracy and tries to hurt her investigation by giving tips to Maria Vanpelt, a reporter who always seems to know more or be where she shouldn't when Tracy or her detectives show up on scene. The team not only solves this mystery, but Tracy and her boyfriend Dan stumble onto a past case where when Nolesco was a detective and had a partner named Hattie, a man was put in jail for murder of Beth Stinison. Tracy and Dan decide to run DNA on this case, and Capt. Nolesco put Tracy on administration leave, and she was tied to the desk...but she was still in the loop of the "cowboy". Someone attempts to kill Tracy because Nolesco serves a search warrant on a man that didn't take to kindly of being accused of murder. However, a beat cop gives Tracy a lead on a suspect, and she is able to again save lives. Robert is very good at keeping me up at nights not being able to sleep until I know the outcome. He knows what police procedure is...and he makes the story seem like it was ripped from a headline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first, but still great

I love the Tracy Crosswhite series so much, but unfortunately I didn't fall for this one quite as much as the first. Don't get me wrong, it was still an excellent book, but there were things that frustrated me. At times it felt like it was dragging, I just wanted to get through with it, and I was more easily able to predict the ending to this book than I had the first. Probably my biggest frustration, and this part may contain spoilers, is that Tracy ended up with another stalker (she had one in the first book as well) and after this is realized, it's really just no big deal. They just kind of brush it off, they don't discuss where he first saw her or what drew her to him. Tracy never has any inner turmoil about having attracted 2 dangerous stalkers in her life, both times resulting in death(s). At one point she even gets angry at Nolasco and seems to hint that her newest stalker was some kind of victim. I was just hoping more thought would've been put into that whole scenario, but it just didn't get there.
