I enjoyed this novella and thought that it was a good start to the Bree Taggert Series by Melinda Leigh. It’s Philadelphia detective Bree Taggert’s second case with the hom*cide division, and her new partner veteran detective Dana Romano. Dana isn’t considered sociable but is a skilled and smart investigator, which Bree would rather have those traits in her new partner. Her first case with hom*cide was ruled a su*cide. James Tyson was m*rdered while sitting in his car, on a possible dr*g deal gone wrong. When they go to break the news to the James’s estranged wife, they learn that the couples 5 year old daughter Lena was supposed to have been with him. What starts as a m*rder investigation quickly morphs into a desperate search for a missing child.
To make matters worse is that Lena is autistic, non-verbal and doesn’t cope with strangers well so trying to find her isn’t going to be easy. This case stirs up memories of Bree’s own traumatic childhood. To find Lena, Bree will most likely have to relive her own terrifying past. After speaking to Bree and Dana, James’s father Marty asked his neighbour to stay at his house, just incase Lena shows up there as he’s going to help look for her. It’s obvious how much he loves his granddaughter, and still finds a way to communicate with her. When she’s found it’s obvious how much she loves him back. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series and finding out how Bree and Dana’s partnership has grown since this prequel. I’d definitely recommend this novella, series, universe and author to everyone.
