Kevin James is willing to sacrifice his body to help save a friend's job
Verified purchase
Here Comes The Boom is about sacrifice. Kevin James is a teacher who has given up on his career when he decides to take a stand up for one of his peers played by Henri Winkler who is about to be fired. James decides to fight MMA to try to save Winkler’s job.

James is surrounded by a good cast of characters from Winkler who is totally dedicated to music and who is also at ringside when he fights to Bas Rutten who is his trainer and doesn’t think he has a chance to Salma Hayek who is the school’s nurse and James’ love obsession. Greg Germann is also thrown in there as the jerk school principal. Each one gets their moments or two during the film.

Some of the best parts are James’ constantly failing at wooing Hayek to one of his fights when it rains. It’s definitely entertaining.

Comedy Twist on Dealing With ChallengesTransforming Them Into Winning Surprises

I metaphorically rolled the die and decided to go with outright purchasing Here Comes The Boom film and I am very glad that I did. Here Comes The Boom film features the character of Scott Voss (Kevin James) who is a caring teacher towards his students and is faced with great odds that he steps up to overcome once he finds out that how well the school he teaches at does financially might also indirectly impact the livelihood of his friend and colleague Marty Streb (Henry Winkler) who he admires professionally and as a friend. Scott Voss is also inspired in a different way by his other colleague Bella Flores (Salma Hayek) who plays hard to get though to be fair she also often helps him in some professional way when he asks for her help in some form. At first Scott Voss is far from certain what he is going to do to both help save andor boost the school financially andor help save his friend’s job until a life changing encounter of an adult student named Niko (Bas Ruten) who Voss meets at a class that he teaches shows him an idea being at first far from aware that he (Niko) is inspiring an idea. There is more I am tempted to say though I want to be considerate of others viewing this review who might want to see the film for themselves.

The King of Queens is at it again and he hit this one out of the park! Salma Hayek also put in a fun performance as did Henry Winkler.
Kevin's real life brother offered up some of the funnier moments dealing with domestic realities. Every character in this film made me laugh until it hurt. This film is a sure crowd pleaser as it has the Asians, Hispanics and the white crowd both old and young covered quite well. Most of the comedy is from the older actors in this film so I think the older crowd will appreciate this film as much as teens will. At times you know you are watching a comedy. At other points you know there is good heart touching drama added in with a comedic touch. And then when the fighting kicks in you feel like you are watching a real fight. If you have a heart for music studies you will cheer these characters on! If you enjoy the UFC/MMA fighting then you'll have a blast watching Kevin James dive into this world and get/give a good whooping! A lot of the real players/announcers/refs from UFC are in this film adding to the feel of a real UFC match. It's a smart film in it's comedic moments. On the other hand, as contrived and predictable as many elements in this story are, you will still find yourself cheering the players on and maybe even feel your eyes water due to feelings from either end of the emotional spectrum. I had given up on comedy films in recent years as most of them our just way too raunchy. But the PG rating on this film...I applaud all those behind this production. This movie works and it will make anyone laugh!

Family Friendly for Real

What a surprisingly good movie! It is so hard to find family friendly films that are not only free of innuendo and bad language, but truly entertaining. Here Comes The Boom greatly exceeded my expectations. We all enjoyed it. I was a little concerned about the whole MMA thing, that it was going to be too violent, but, while it was made clear how physically demanding and painful it is, it was kept at a comedy level (if that makes any sense.) Kevin James is such a likeable guy, and the message of commitment to a goal, the importance of family, the value of music, and appreciation for dedicated teachers-- all so positive and uplifting. The subject matter here wouldn't appeal to the Frozen crowd, but for older kids, especially boys, this movie should be at the top of the family viewing list.

Great Lessons

Really enjoyed this movie. Kevin James always does a great job bringing his talents to a role. Had some incredibly hilarious moments in it. The one thing that was really endearing even in this comedy was the plot. To go to bat for a friend, to put your own well being on the line for another person that you see is having a hard time. It has a good touch of suspense towards the end as well. Definitely an enjoyable family film, if the kids are older of course.

Five-Star As Family Entertainment

No, it's not Dr. Zhivago. But neither is it the trash it was dismissed as when it came out. There are fewer and fewer good family movies... Wonder, the Pete's Dragon remake, and Duma were all recent exceptions.

I guess it is tainted by association with Adam Sandler, so critics have to rip it apart.

Good, silly, funny, Rocky-style movie that adults and kids can both enjoy. American flags are prominent throughout, immigrants becoming citizens are celebrated, there are two (two!) scenes of un-ironic prayer. Shocking stuff actually.

Positive family friendly movie.

It was a good overal movie. It reminded me of an MMA version of Happy Gilmore. That is a high compliment to a comedy. James is such a charismatic actor it is hard not to like any movie he takes part in. The supporting cast actually looked like they were having fun in most scenes. I gave 1 star for an original twist on a common comedy plot. I gave 2 stars for the great cast. I gave 3 stars for the great inspirational moments. The movie seemed rushed in the beginning and didnt establish the proper framework. The end was very predictable. The score didnt fit most of the important scenes and sometimes hurt the delivery of the lines. As comedies go, I would recommend this movie. It is clean and family friendly with an uplifting tone
