After nineteen years in California, March Murray returns to the small Massachusetts town where she grew up. For all this time, March has been avoiding her own troubled history, but when she encounters Hollis—the boy she loved so desperately, the man who has never forgotten her—the past collides with the present as their reckless love is reignited. This dark romantic tale asks whether it is possible to survive a love that consumes you completely. The answers March Murray discovers are both heartbreaking and wise, as complex as they are devastating—for in heaven and in our dreams, love is simple and glorious. But it is something altogether different here on earth...

This is the story of two lovers who are reunited 20 years after they've gone their separate ways and both have married other people. Hollis's wife is dead, but March's husband is alive and well. It is also the story of how one woman, who desparately loves a man and becomes consumed by him, begins to overlook his treatment of her and in the end, loses her self. Hollis has raised himself from a sorry child who barely spoke at all to the richest man in the town and county and who owns most of it. Those who used to mock him now step aside to allow him to pass on the sidewalk.
The story of March and Hollis is also the story of many women in society who are blinded by love and fear to believe that "he didn't mean it" and "he would never hurt me." With the exception of the daughter, Gwen, I didn't like most of the main characters. I loved Gwen's relationship with Hollis's horse, Tarot, and I think that Gwen's life was changed for the better by her experiences with this dangerous horse who loved Gwen and taught her wonderful lessons. Gwen is the character who changes the most, in my opinion.
"Here on Earth" is a dark story with a lot of symbolism and also truth in it. Just because I didn't feel it was worthy of four or five stars doesn't mean it isn't, but my reading experience left me feeling that the characters could have been more than they were in this literary novel by an author who has produced many other excellent books.
"Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman is a love story unlike any others I've ever read. It's like six love stories crafted together into one beautifully written novel that highlights both the beauty and the pain that we are willing to endure to follow our hearts to the end of Earth and beyond. And of course the last few paragraphs gutted me to the point I couldn't sleep for a good hour despite the late hour I sacrificed finishing it cover to cover yesterday, though you'd have to read the entire book for it to enrapture you the same way.
What I disliked: It switched perspectives a lot. One paragraph would be from the teenagers mind. Two paragraphs later it would be from the moms perspective. It was hard to get used to, but once I did it was lovely. I also disliked the amount of extramarital affairs; however the reviews did indicate it would be secretively dark so I should have guessed.
What I liked: It was beautifully written, thought provoking and in a tone I haven't felt in a while. It really spoke volumes about the power of love and how it compels us to be something else - something more - something new. It also described a season, (in life as well as the weather) so astonishingly well that I'm not going to even try to give it words. Alice Hoffman captured a feeling, something unrepeatable. I find myself thinking about certain aspects of the book during random times of the day - in the car driving, talking with a stranger, or just trying to understand my own world. Shockingly I would relive the pain that book sends you through a hundred times more just to be blessed enough to read it again.
