Haward gives us a look at religion from the inside. A reverend by trade, Joe paints religion with an unbiased eye weaving historical and literary quotes, black and white images and poetry to paint a picture the reader won't soon forget. The collection unabashedly tackles the issues with institutional religion and has a great introduction and afterward from the author to offer additional insight on the collection. Haward's voice and variety of techniques and approaches will keep the reader engaged no matter their affiliation with or opinion on religion. Pick it up, if you haven't already.

Scathing takedown of religion

The author is a reverend, which makes his critique of religion all the more harrowing. The verse is terse and to the point. Illustrations help convey the gravity of the poet's mission. I'm religious, but I understand all institutions need to be kept in check. I thought the poet was fair.

A thought provoking, masterfully crafted critique of religious institutions. The Rev. uses scalpel sharp language (with Jesuit like precision) to bring to light the inequities of the system. He rails against the hierarchy of control, status and privilege, while keeping the teachings of the Nazarene front and center. At times a harrowing read, but a necessary one. Brimming with righteous anger, heart, soul & compassion.

Joe is a poet with electrical fire. He takes to task everything wrong with institutional religion and does it with an eloquence only a poet knows. I had the honor of reading an early draft, and writing the forward. This is well worth your time.
