I'm about 40% into the book and so far there seems to be no plot except:
Ryann meets Lad, Ryann meets Nox, Ryann meets Lad, Ryann meets Nox, Ryann meets Lad, Ryann meets Nox, etc. ad infinitum. ad nauseum.
All male characters are enamoured beyond control with this rather boring girl. No real reason why.
I guess there is supposed to be a supernatural element to this story, which is the only reason i picked it up, but so far apart from being able to climb trees pretty well no evidence of this has been offered, only extremely obvious "mysterious" references to living in the woods and being from an ancient people.
So far, as put so eloquently in the Princess Bride, this seems to be "a book about kissing".
So i`m probably just gonna leave it here.

Appealing and Troperiffic Without Being Overdone

I really enjoyed this book. As a reader, a writer, and a mom, I find myself somewhat of an aficionado of fantasy fiction written for adolescents to adults. I've liked it all along, but as a parent of some very literate children, I found this book refreshing. Although there is a fair amount of internal discussion of the heroine's feelings of sexual attraction (and Love at First Sight), it's done very tastefully. I would let my 13-year-old daughter read it, and although the eight-year-old is capable of reading it, she'd be in over her head as far as content goes. Call it sixth grade and up.

The author writes well, and has a good editor (a better editor than I am of my own husband's books, for certain). She manages to hit all the right tropes without making the story stereotyped or trite, and I found the modern-day fantasy fiction with Fae Folk (rather than the glut - albeit often well-written - of dystopias, vampires, werewolves, and other Creatures of the Night) especially appealing. The characters are engaging and sympathetic, and if our heroine is a bit overwrought at times, well... she's a teenager in the flush of first love; it's an age-appropriate - and believable - response to the events going on around her. The love interest is believable too, especially in his more fish-out-of-water moments, as he is not familiar with the human world.

I already have the other three books in the series (and the novella) handy on my Kindle.I'll let you know!

2.5 Stars Predictable and simple, but compelling enough to finish

Before going into a review, I want to emphasize that I did enjoy the concept of this book. I read it all the way to the end and never got bored with the storyline. I’m not sure if this is the authors debut novel or not, but there are a few key elements that could’ve been tweaked to elevate the story.

Lads dialogue seems a bit childish in the beginning; like he’s a ten year old, which diminishes the romance. I like him as a hero, although he has a few disturbing qualities - such as the stalker syndrome that definitely doesn’t need to me romanticized for young ladies.

***Spoiler Alert*** Why is it that every other race/species, other than humans, are always impossibly beautiful and perfect? This is overdone, and makes the reading impossible to relate to . . . Or believe. And how are the Elves immortal and their ruler only about 60-70 years old? What happens to the older ones who live forever? Seems power seats would rarely be vacated.

Predictable. There were no surprises or buildup for major revelations. The structure of the story, hints, and backstory left little to the imagination. At about 26% I had already figured out that her grandmother was a fairy (thus Ryann has fairy blood and the reason compulsion doesn’t work on her), fan pods were bad fairies responsible for the disappearing people, and immediately upon Lad mentioning his brother/cousin, I assumed Nox. Oh yeah, and that Lad was a prince. Stranger still was Ryann’s reaction to that news. She had a breakdown that required Lad to rock her in his lap . . . Not likely.

As a Southerner myself, it’s hard to believe no one in that small Mississippi town could make a decent glass of sweet tea.

The last issue I’ll point out, and saved for last because it’s another major concern for young teenage girls reading this, is the situation that unfolds at the campsite with Nox. He tries to force himself on Ryann, then leaves her in the woods alone in the middle of the night!!! Then, she’s worried about loosening him as a friend. What is this teaching? That should’ve been the end of their friendship; obviously that’s not what he was after anyway.

I think this was a good start to a decent story, but needed some work to make it really shine.

As a 28 year-old wife and mother, reading a book about a 16 year old girl is usually not my thing. I’ve had Hidden Deep downloaded for OVER a year or two. I had initially loved the summary, which is why I originally downloaded it, until I saw the age of the main character and I figured it would be just another teenage Twilight wanna be. Fast forward and I’m in a terrible book lurch. I gobble up books like no ones business, but I was stuck between “already read it” and “too corny” with all the new Amazon suggestions. Desperately scrolling through my stash of emergency reads, I stumbled upon Hidden Deep again, blew off the proverbial dust, and gave it a chance. I. Was. Hooked. The world building was basic, but I loved the drama and how REAL Ryann is. Not some twittering, girl child who makes stupid choices, but a head strong girl trying to pick up her broken family and use her brain. The character acts much older than a 16 year old, which slightly makes the mother in me a little more forgiving about her running around the woods alone, making out with boys. Pair that with the lack of reminders about her age and thankfully, the lack of daily high school filler (bleh), this book was a great read and I looked forward to the next one and the character development to come!
