Hidden Deep: Book 1 of The Hidden Saga Kindle Edition
Sixteen-year-old Ryann Carroll has just run into the guy who saved her life ten years ago. You might think she'd be happy to see him again. Not exactly. She's a bit underdressed (as in skinny-dipping) and he's ...not supposed to exist.
After her father's affair, all Ryann wants is to escape the family implosion fallout and find a little peace. She also wouldn't mind a first date that didn't suck, but she's determined not to end up like her mom: vulnerable, betrayed, destroyed. Ryann's just moved into her grandma's house in rural Mississippi, the same place where ten years earlier she became lost in the woods overnight and nearly died.
She's still irresistibly drawn to those woods. There she encounters the boy who kept her from freezing to death that long ago winter night and was nowhere to be seen when rescuers arrived. He's still mysterious, but now all grown-up and gorgeous, too. And the more she's with him, the greater the threat he poses to Ryann's strict policy-- never want someone more than he wants you.
Seventeen-year-old Lad knows the law of his people all too well: Don't get careless and Don't get caught.
It's allowed his race to live undetected in this world for thousands of years, mentioned only in flawed and fading folklore. Lad's never been able to forget about Ryann since that night ten years ago. When he sees her again, his fascination re-ignites and becomes a growing desire that tempts him to break all the rules. He's not even supposed to talk to a human, much less fall in love with one.
And the timing is atrocious. The Assemblage is coming, the rift between the Light and Dark is widening. Lad may have to trade his own chance at happiness to keep the humans, especially Ryann, blissfully ignorant and safe.

READ THE ENTIRE HIDDEN SAGE-- AND GIVE IN TO THE GLAMOUR
The ten-book Hidden Saga series is an epic romantic fantasy adventure that is enjoyed to the fullest when all books are read together. However, you don't have to read the entire series at once to enjoy it. It is written in subsets-- the original trilogy-- Hidden Deep, Hidden Heart and Hidden Hope. The Dark Court subset is comprised of Hidden Darkness, Hidden Danger, and Hidden Desire. Then the Ancient Court trilogy, which begins with Hidden Game, picks up in a whole new location (Europe!) with all new characters, then wraps around to include and intertwine with favorite characters from the previous books. Hidden Heir completes the series and involves all the characters in an incredible life-and-death, intensely romantic final adventure. "I love it when I fall deeper into the story as I move from one chapter to the next. That's what I got here. ... as a whole, this book is a delicious read. I actually went back to the first chapter immediately after finishing the epilogue which is HEART-STOPPING by the way. The cliffhanger left me with my mouth open and ready to reread the whole thing (which I kinda did). " Lyn Ching, Side B blog

Ryann meets Lad, Ryann meets Nox, Ryann meets Lad, Ryann meets Nox, Ryann meets Lad, Ryann meets Nox, etc. ad infinitum. ad nauseum.
All male characters are enamoured beyond control with this rather boring girl. No real reason why.
I guess there is supposed to be a supernatural element to this story, which is the only reason i picked it up, but so far apart from being able to climb trees pretty well no evidence of this has been offered, only extremely obvious "mysterious" references to living in the woods and being from an ancient people.
So far, as put so eloquently in the Princess Bride, this seems to be "a book about kissing".
So i`m probably just gonna leave it here.
The author writes well, and has a good editor (a better editor than I am of my own husband's books, for certain). She manages to hit all the right tropes without making the story stereotyped or trite, and I found the modern-day fantasy fiction with Fae Folk (rather than the glut - albeit often well-written - of dystopias, vampires, werewolves, and other Creatures of the Night) especially appealing. The characters are engaging and sympathetic, and if our heroine is a bit overwrought at times, well... she's a teenager in the flush of first love; it's an age-appropriate - and believable - response to the events going on around her. The love interest is believable too, especially in his more fish-out-of-water moments, as he is not familiar with the human world.
I already have the other three books in the series (and the novella) handy on my Kindle.I'll let you know!
Lads dialogue seems a bit childish in the beginning; like he’s a ten year old, which diminishes the romance. I like him as a hero, although he has a few disturbing qualities - such as the stalker syndrome that definitely doesn’t need to me romanticized for young ladies.
***Spoiler Alert*** Why is it that every other race/species, other than humans, are always impossibly beautiful and perfect? This is overdone, and makes the reading impossible to relate to . . . Or believe. And how are the Elves immortal and their ruler only about 60-70 years old? What happens to the older ones who live forever? Seems power seats would rarely be vacated.
Predictable. There were no surprises or buildup for major revelations. The structure of the story, hints, and backstory left little to the imagination. At about 26% I had already figured out that her grandmother was a fairy (thus Ryann has fairy blood and the reason compulsion doesn’t work on her), fan pods were bad fairies responsible for the disappearing people, and immediately upon Lad mentioning his brother/cousin, I assumed Nox. Oh yeah, and that Lad was a prince. Stranger still was Ryann’s reaction to that news. She had a breakdown that required Lad to rock her in his lap . . . Not likely.
As a Southerner myself, it’s hard to believe no one in that small Mississippi town could make a decent glass of sweet tea.
The last issue I’ll point out, and saved for last because it’s another major concern for young teenage girls reading this, is the situation that unfolds at the campsite with Nox. He tries to force himself on Ryann, then leaves her in the woods alone in the middle of the night!!! Then, she’s worried about loosening him as a friend. What is this teaching? That should’ve been the end of their friendship; obviously that’s not what he was after anyway.
I think this was a good start to a decent story, but needed some work to make it really shine.
