“I loved it." —Stephen King
From Jason Rekulak, Edgar-nominated author of The Impossible Fortress, comes a wildly inventive spin on the classic horror story in Hidden Pictures, a supernatural thriller about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets.
Fresh out of rehab, Mallory Quinn takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy.
Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.
Then, Teddy’s artwork becomes increasingly sinister, and his stick figures quickly evolve into lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to wonder if these are glimpses of a long-unsolved murder, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force.
Knowing just how crazy it all sounds, Mallory nevertheless sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy before it’s too late.

Surprises and twists, and an honest-to-goodness believable ghost story set right here in our day and age.
I wish I could give it more than five stars.
HIDDEN PICTURES is a mystifying story of a child's strange evolution in artistic abilities and the babysitter who senses something abnormal behind his sinister drawings. Thanks to her sponsor, Mallory is finally on the right path as a recovering addict with a traumatic past. She's thrilled to readjust her life as Teddy's babysitter, and boy, was she a natural! I marveled at her positivity and free-spirited energy. The bond between Teddy and Mallory pulled at my heartstrings. And it was pretty impressive to see how quickly she fit in with the Maxwells, despite their quirky beliefs.
The hauntingly beautiful illustrations throughout the novel enthralled my interest. Jason's words didn't need the visuals since his writing is robust and increasingly addictive in hindsight. But their presence made it more vivid while maintaining the creepy suspense coasting under wraps. Unfortunately, I cannot talk your ear off because it's a gift to go into this book relatively blind, as I did. The twisty reveal, in the end, left me flabbergasted. I would have never expected those turn of events!
Respectfully praiseworthy, HIDDEN PICTURES is a must-read! Jason formulated a compelling premise that ultimately won me over from start to finish. I entice you to pick this book up instantly; it has everything one can ask for in a supernatural thriller!
Premise is a twist on a previous concept, but contains enough originality to be fresh and interesting. Book begins slowly, as many do, setting the scenes, characters, etc. At one point early on, I was afraid the mundane day to day events would continue. However, the story immediately dives into the abyss and never looks back, twisting and turning in ways that make you cringe.
Ending was a bit "Hollywood" (as I refer to it), and will leave that alone so as not to spoil anything specific.
