What could have been a great book..

This is the 2nd book I've read by vanessa Kelly. And both were the same way. As far as romance novels go, they are longer than most by a little,at over 400 pages. And in all 400 pages, there are two romantic encounters. Two. I am an avid novel reader. And unfortunately this book had an amazing plot line but failed to deliever. So did the other I read. The characters backgrounds are built up amazingly, but their love and attraction to each other is lacking. When I read a romance novel, I look for a good story line, well introduced Hero and Heroine, and romance. Vanessa Kelly fails in the romance department. The book drags out. So much useless dialogue with intentions of humor that falls very flat. I've read many authors and Kelly is the only one you seems like she is almost embarrassed to write steamy romance scenes, so she just doesnt. And believe me when I say, even the 2 (per book) she wrote were not up to par with any other other authors. Even during those encounters, which should be sensual and sexy, she has the H/h talking to each other and cracking jokes the whole time. Honestly, the whole scene is just awkward. If you enjoy romance novels with a decent storyline, but not much detail of what either character looks like other than hair and eye color and absolutely no romance, then Vanessa Kelly is the perfect author for you. I did give 2 stars, because the storyline is nice and I bought the book to give Kelly another chance AND to see Royal find love after being introduced in the previous book. Although not historically accurate, it was a nice story. Though, I must say that the book gets exciting in the beginning, dreadfully boring in the middle for about 225 pages (I'd be lying if I said I didnt skip a few pages of pure useless dialogue), and then 20 pages from the end the plot thickens and adventure happens. And then you're left hanging with a dreadfully awful ending with no answers as to what happened or will happen with the villian. I hate to sound like I'm bashing the book, but after over 800 pages read collectively between the two books, I'm very much let down. So for those of you who think this will be a steamy romance, like catherine coulter or other authors, you are sadly mistaken and should look elsewhere.

He has no real interest in life until he meets Lady Ainsley Matthews, an heiress and incredible beauty. Sparks fly immediately between the two, but then Royal is told that she is betrothed. After a botched kidnapping and a refusal to Royal's marriage proposal, Ainsley departs for Scotland to live with a reclusive aunt. Months later, Royal tracks her down and gets the shock of his life. And, so begins one of the best romances that I have ever read! Royal is the hero of my dreams. He is fierce toward his enemies, tender toward those he loves, and, oh boy, he wears a kilt! What more could a woman ask for? Although at first Ainsley seems to be a woman who has it all with her wealth, beauty, and social standing, she is actually a prisoner trying to escape a betrothal to an abusive man. By turns, I sympathized with her and also wanted to grab her by the shoulders and shake her. Both H/h are incredibly well done and the plot is excellent. The descriptions of Scotland make me even more determined to visit someday. All the secondary characters are also vividly portrayed and Royal's grandfather, Angus, stole my heart. I highly recommend this book and suggest that, if you haven't already, you read the 'The Highlander's Princess Bride' which is the story of Royal's older brother Nick and also introduces Royal and Ainsley.

Sexual situations may offend some readers.

This is the first book in the Kendrick Clan Series that Vanessa Kelly wrote, now having read the first and last in the series I can't wait to read more of the series and anything that Vanessa Kelly wrote. This book though frustrating, is acurate to the time period and the serious lack of women's rights. Even with that situation I still have to rate this book as a 5 out of 5 stars. The pepper rating is going to have to be a mixture of Jalapeno/Cayenne Pepper, there is a slow burn between the two main characters with a few hot scenes.

Amazingly written, this book is one that will have your heart pounding between the fear of what might happen and the heat that is between Royal and Ainsley. The Highlander Who Protected Me has comedy, drama and suspense it has everything that I think that a good book has in it. If you have a trigger about assault, this book maynot be one that you will want to read, this book touches on that subject. I recommend this book for those who like multiple tropes, (I don't want to give away any spoilers so I wont list them,) but if you like Regency trope then this one is one that you might want to check out. I enjoy the Highlander theme, I don't know if there is an actual trope for that or not.

Compared with the other books of Vanessa Kelly this sounded like a joke. I would rate her other books a 4-5 stars and this one only 1-2 honestly.
I will give 3 stars because i will compare it to other romance authors , but I was expecting this story to be more entertaining given the characters strongheadedness, they had so much potential for a more intriguing story...
It was to much explaining i felt like an idiot reading it...
When i first started reading vanessa kelly i said to myself that her books are worth the price because of the way she is keeping you glued to the book you can't put it down till you know all the story... but this one is worth more like a 99p book (it took me a week to finish it while i read another in 3-5 hours.)
Sorry for Royal he could have had his story told better.

This was one of the most beautifully written stories I have ever read. The characters and story completely came alive. I was so emotionally involved in this story. I ugly cried through at least half of the book...wow...and laughed through the rest. The story was engaging, devastatingly heartbreaking and hopelessly romantic all rolled together. Royal Kendrick and Ainsley were a perfect match, I couldn’t get enough of them. Royal was literally the perfect hero. Painsley Ainsley was exactly that... A infuriating pain... but in a good way. I really enjoyed her character. The bickering between Ainsley and Royal and Angus was ridiculously hilarious. I just really loved this story so much and cannot begin to praise it enough. I have never wanted to reread a book so badly and I JUST finished it!!! Absolute page turner.
