Faolan McKay is stunned to see a beautiful woman cursing the sky, but he quickly realizes that she is not a mythical siren, but a flesh and blood woman in danger of freezing to death. He helps her to the tower and gets her out of her wet clothes, tucks her into bed and climbs in to share his heat. When she wakes, he is gone. She dresses and ventures out of the tower. She soon discovers that the tower is part the construction of a look out for the McKay clan. There are no women at the site and she rolls up her sleeves and cleans the kitchen and prepares a meal. She is intrigued by Faolan and feels the spark that she has been hoping for, she can see that he returns her regard, but he holds himself at bay and when a maid named Brynna shows up from the McKay Keep, Faolan immediately has her act as chaperone and takes Cora to the Keep.
Things at the McKay Keep are tense and Cora soon learns that Faolan is the half-brother of Malcolm, the laird of the McKays and that he used to court Malcolm’s wife Noreen – who happens to be the half-sister of her betrothed. Tensions escalate and Faolan and Cora end up married, but when Faolan fails to consummate the marriage, believing he will seek an annulment to free Cora, Malcolm gets involved and things turn deadly. Soon Faolan and Cora find themselves as Laird and Lady of the clan with the possibility of HEA within reach, but plots to destroy them abound and they will have to root out a traitor before they can even think about their future.
This was a very good, well written, fast-paced story with very likable characters. The book has action, betrayal, warm to steamyish love scenes, multiple villains, accusations of witchery, traitors, some amusing banter, great secondary characters, a very sweet, romantic declaration of love and finally a very, very, very hard won HEA. As much as I enjoyed this book, there were some things that left me baffled and some minor inconsistencies and typos, that didn’t ruin the book for me, but that did rob it of a five-star rating. This is the second book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone title with no problems. Overall, I did enjoy this book, I am happy to recommend it and I will definitely be looking forward to the next installment in the series.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested from NetGalley and the Publisher. All opinions are my own.*
Parts I had problems with. 1. The H has 2 little nieces and he doesn't mention them until the 94% mark. The h was unaware there were two little girls. 2. The h is presumed dead and is missing for weeks and she doesn't think to send a messenger to her brother where she is? No mention of her concern he would be worried. 3. Physical harm comes to the h and no-one thinks to treat her? Finally the H mentions it at the end of the day when he is about to have her in the bath tub. No mention from the h that she was in pain either. What happened to her, she would have been in pain. So for all this - it was 4 stars review.
BUT, we have so many twists and unexpected suspense that made me round up to 5. There is a part near the beginning that involved the H's 1/2 brother and his wife. Thought for sure I knew where this story was heading and it upset me because would have made it a cookie cutter story. Alas, the author threw me a huge curve ball and I fell in love with the story again. We also have the H asking a nasty women villain a question. Her answer could tear out H/h apart. Another surprise twist because the author again, didn't follow the rules and made the story more entertaining.
There is lovemaking, within marriage - heat level 4.5 out of 5, described several times.
The story was unique and kept my interest. I liked the spirit and strength of the h and the loyalty of the H, they made a great couple. Romance builds slowly. The scene where the h is fighting for her life was heart pounding.
A lot of violence, more villains than you can shake a stick at. Murder, blood, fighting all raised my rating. I did want the H to discover more about his birth.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, don't have to read book 1 to enjoy this one, HEA, romance and steam. (ljb)
Cora MacKenzie is a lonely, restless Laird's daughter ready to make her forever life and is searching to find her place in life. Mostly left to her own devices since late youth when her brother Buchanan became laird upon their dad's death. We met Buchanan in the first book of this series. She was promised by her father to Cormac Grantas a child, Cormac has shown no interest in her the last 4 years she's been eligible for marriage. Buchanan wants her to find love like he has and sends her off to meet neighbor Rolfe Munro. When they meet there's no chemistry and they both know it. On the way home she's caught in a sudden violent rainstorm, bucked off her horse and swept away by a river as she fights to survive. When she finally drags herself to shore she's miles from where she was and sees Faolan McKay on the shore. He drags her home to his lonely towers and keeps her from dying of exposure.
Faolan is the son of a handfast that didn't last. The McKay Laird went on to marry another and had his son Malcolm who is now Laird. Malcolm has banished Faolan to build a watchtower fortification for the Lairdship by the sea to protect their borders. He's there with other male outcasts and a few woman staff to care and feed them. When he finds Cora there are no women there to help and he is determined this siren from the water will survive with his help. In the morning she discovers her plight and makes herself useful so they may eat. And so begins the journey of these two passionate and determined to survive people discovering love. We follow them with twists and turns each having to make decisions that determine their fate together.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Mary Wine is an author with a special gift, and this series proves it, Brilliant!
Faolan and Cora are wonderful together, they generate energy and passion in every page, wether it’s towards each other or for the clan.
We also meet some old and new characters, Cora’s brother Buchanan, Cormac Grant her Betrothed and a neighbouring Laird Rolfe Munro.
I adored this book which is full of adventure that’s addictive and very satisfying, if you in the market for a good read you need look no further.
Don’t miss out on this series.
Outstanding reading!
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

I enjoyed Cora's character a lot since everyone thought she was childish. Really good book, enjoyed this story immensely....I was hoping for a story of Cormac Grant...**please**
P.S. There are so many errors in this story and an edited updated version would be great and welcoming. At one part, there's mention that Cora married her brother, the character's names got completely mixed up and it's an innocent error but one nonetheless..please please get a new editor because someone is lacking in their job! This is extremely annoying, I feel like I am grading a school paper with the amount of errors this book has.
