And, as a petty aside, can we talk for a second about the hero's obsession with the smell of the heroine's hair? Let's be real. If you spent a week riding on a horse, sleeping next to campfires, surrounded by grown men who hadn't bathed for nearly two weeks, and not bathing yourself (beyond your face and hands) the entire time, YOUR HAIR WOULD NOT SMELL LIKE ROSES. But the hero tells us that hers does. Repeatedly.
I was immensely disappointed with this novel and frustrated by the author's insistence on pushing me out of the story with her unnecessary, repetitive, and wordy filler. Needless to say, I will not be reading anymore of her work, and I wouldn't recommend her to others either.
Laird Robert Sinclair can't believe his luck when he sees the contents of the supply cart he and his men have won. He's heard the rumours and knows that the way to gain money and revenge is now in his hands.
Our heroine shows her true strength, but also falls victim to her own hopes and dreams.
Our hero is a warrior through and through, and always puts the Clan before himself. Is he right in the way he does it though?
A wonderful historical/highlander romance, with fabulous characters that you will meet again in the rest of the series.
I loved it.

Alwin Hewett is sent to Dunbrae Castle to marry a man, whom she’s never met, by her father, who hopes that a merger with the neighbouring Lord Raef Warren, will help prevent further attacks on his lands. Alwin hopes for a marriage where she will have respect & the freedom to make some decisions; she knows it’s highly unlikely she’ll get more than that. She has to leave her beloved maid behind, along with her trunks, in order to fool anyone who sees their convoy.
Robert & Burke Sinclair are on secret missions in the “Borderlands” to disrupt English supplies, when they attack a small convoy with their band of men. In the supply cart, they find a beautiful maiden, who is on her way to be their enemy’s bride. Robert decides there & then to capture the girl & demand ransom from Raef Warren. By marrying her secretly, he also hopes to demand her dowry from her English father, Lord Hewett, who has been broadcasting his wealth.
When Alwin learns what Robert has done - taken her freedom of choice from her (even though she was prepared to marry a complete stranger, just not a Highlander) - she is furious. She is determined to escape from these barbarians, whom she’s heard so many tales about. However, after spending some time on the journey to Robert’s home, she realises that he’s not quite the monster she perceived him to be. When they arrive in Roslin, she hopes their attraction to each other will lead to a happy union. She just hasn’t realised how determined Robert is to go through with his plans of ransoming her...
Well written characters who are engaging and believable. Loved the Laird, Robert, and Alwin's love story. At times I wanted to thump Robert for the way he treated Alwin but, he always came good in the end. Alwin was a great heroine, stoic, strong and loyal to her beliefs. Beautiful and feisty.
Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Wonderful story and I can't wait to read the second book in the series! Superb writing and I so love a happening.
