This first book of the Holding Their Own series, A Story of Survival, is set in the year 2015, when the world is burdened by the second Great Depression. The United States, already weakened by internal strife, becomes the target of an international terror plot. A series of attacks results in thousands of casualties and disables the country's core infrastructure. The combination of economic hardship and the staggering blow of the terror attacks results in a collapse of the government.
This is a realistic story of how an average, middle class couple survives the cascading events brought on by international politics, high tech military actions and the eventual downfall of society. All of their survival skills are tested during the action packed expedition in a world that resembles the American West of 200 years past.

For the first time, this genre most definitely has credibility and purpose. We are no longer just frustrated science fiction fans, gawking at a possible future gone wrong. What is happening now is very real, and will result in something or some series of events that will change America, most likely, forever. Coming events will be on the order of magnitude of the American Revolutionary War, or the Civil War, or the Great Depression, in the ways that American's lives and future are changed.
This is another book written about a quasi-military type hero, who loves guns and all the trappings, as he lives in and exits a metropolitan area, to return to remote family lands.
The plot, as concerns what happens in the broader society as a whole, is more interesting than the lives of the characters in the story. It's as if the characters and plot around them exists just to give credibility and interest to the broader story line.
For me this book brought home new awarenesses of possible future outcomes. As with most books of this genre I have read, something really hits home and makes me think about future outcomes in a way I haven't before. There is very little preaching of right wing politics, which I appreciate.
The authors ability to hold your attention is good. About the only thing I could fault is the almost laughable dialogue between the protagonist and his wife. I would suggest the author do some boning up on married couple dialogue and try to include something more than joking banter.
I haven't read books two and three, but will likely do so soon.
If this author should want to write another book, I would like to see one written about a guy and his family, that are not gun enthusiasts, and who haven't thoroughly prepared for TEOTWAWKI. We have lots of books about fully prepared people. Surely, there will be lots of people who were not prepared, or only partially prepared, who will survive. Such a book could be written that would emphasize good preparation simply from the outcomes around not being prepared. The real life experience of Ferfal, during Argentina's collapse, is most interesting just because of this. Just google him for a great story.
In all, I highly recommend this book.
After reading the author's bio, I was a little leery about buying a book from what may be just be another commando wanna-be with a Special Forces Degree from The University of You-Tube. Or worse, someone with a political or religious axe to grind. While reading this book I didn't pick up on any of that in the plot, storyline, theme, etc.
I was pleasantly surprised on how well the economic and social collapses were portrayed in the beginning. It was realistic and dramatic enough without any ideological or political grandstanding. It was convincing enough on it's own and allowed the rest of the story to be told - which was really about about.......
There were some negative comments about the sexual encounters in the story. I still don't get that. There are no over the top depictions, language, or anything even remotely close to gratuitous. Nor did I read anything that I would consider tasteless. However, I do agree with some in that I don't think a women would be feeling remotely sexual in the short hours after seeing their mother's dead body on live TV after being blown-up. I think that one was a reach.
I have mixed feelings about the banter between the two main characters, Bishop, and Terri. Some complained about the content. I didn't get that either. It was fun banter between a husband and wife that many of us are guilty of. I know MANY happily married couples who interact this way. I also think that early on in the story this banter did a great job of establishing the character dynamics between these two. However, after about the middle of the book I was growing a bit tired of it. This light and funny banter took place from beginning to end, at almost EVERY exchange between the two. I don't know ANY couples who do that. Was this a deal breaker for me? Nah. I enjoyed these two characters a lot. I just started skipping over the useless and unrealistic banter as the story got juicier.
I also like the way Bishop was portrayed. Yes, he had some skills and knew about weapons, but I don't think he was portrayed as the over the top "shoot em all, let God sort em out", character as I expected. Nor was he a "let dog eat dog", man either. On the contrary, he had doubts and fears and struggled with a few moral dilemmas as they went along. There were actually a couple of times when it was obvious that he wasn't the best at something, or even bulletproof. I liked that. Again, I was expecting another commando type caricature; or maybe another graduate from U of YT.
I gave this read a 5. Not because the author is Gabriel Garcia Marquez in camo, but because it was a fun read and it gave me exactly what I wanted -a good story with some good characters in a sub-genre I enjoy.
My delivery of Holding Their Own II arrives Wednesday - I'm looking forward to it.

This novel had some good ideas, but the writing style and such were not my sort of thing. As a former freelance writer, I have to say that the author's writing style is not of a level of proficiency that a good novel requires. His method is good for manual and reference type writing, but not suitable for dramatic writing.
Nothing about it got me involved in the characters or made me feel anything for them. When it came to the end, I did not care anything about the characters or their plight.
Many of the scenarios that unfolded were realistic (IMHO) and such, and I liked that the primary character was NOT depicted as the without flaw uber skilled uber equipped survivor so common to these sorts of works. This speaks well of the ideas in this novel.
I do not regret the purchase, but I can't say I was entertained enough to bother spending money or time on any of the sequels to this novel. The totality of the tale, let alone the culmination of the events, did not leave me wanting any more. I just never grew to care for the characters or for what may happen to them.
