Eighteen-year-old Winter doesn’t believe in happily-ever-afters, even though she helps support her family by weaving stories about them. While some people visit Lago Caverns to experience the absolute darkness and ghostly atmosphere deep below the ground, most visitors come to hear Winter’s stories.
When a teacher goes missing amidst some ghastly rumors, Winter is the only person who believes something more nefarious is at play…especially when the teacher’s absence spells trouble for Lago Caverns.

About the author

Juliet grew up in northern California, where she spent her free time staring at spooky lakes and making up stories about the old buildings surrounding them. Years later, she still lives in California and she still makes up spooky stories…about lakes and the old buildings surrounding them. Like April in April’s Ghosts, she’s terrified of spiders and she’s obsessed with Hamilton. Like Lissa in June's Blood, she plays the piano...but not very well.

SUMMARY
18yo Winter leads a group of tourists into the mining cavern. She tells the story of a husband and wife, their gold, and magic. Garrett, her ghost, listens to the story, too. They're different every time. He's been her best friend since she was a little girl. He's still 19. She *likes* him.
Winter is in English when a new boy, Shane, joins the class. A month before graduation. All the kids make friends with him except Winter. Maureen and Rourke, twins, own the caverns next to Winter's; they give her rides to school. Maureen is the closest thing she has to a living friend. They go to the car. Rourke shows up with Shane. Shane invites Winter to his house for a party; he lives alone.
Winter envies the twins's relative wealth. Her dad died before she was born, her Aunt Noelle moved in with them 3 years ago. Winter designs coupons for returning customers, then goes to the caverns. She tells Garrett how she's trying to save the business. "You know, it wouldn't be the end of the world if you had to leave." Yes, it would. "But then how would I see you?" "I would miss you." He alludes to secrets, then gets angry she still thinks there's treasure when they've hunted and hunted together. He tells her a story about a boy trying to find enough gold to prove to his girl's father he can provide; he's killed by another miner, who then atones by earning the girl's love and giving her a good life. Winter doesn't like that story. "I think you sympathize with Eli because maybe you made some questionable decisions during *your* life." He whispers, "Oh, Winter, how right you are."
Aunt Noelle has a nightmare about the stalker, Paul, that she escaped when she moved here.
The English teacher is out sick, and Winter needs help with her final project. She hears Shane spreading rumors that Mr Ibanez preys on underage girls. She confronts him. Shane, "Can you prove it's false?" "Can you prove it's false that you were kicked out of your last school because you broke into the girls locker room, stole all their bras, and wore them on your head like masks? No? Maybe I should speculate a few other things about your life prior to Oaktown High." She's going to find out where Mr Ibanez went and why just to prove Shane wrong.
Winter tells a group of tourists that all the caverns are connected, but no one's allowed to explore this one because human remains have been found.
EVALUATION
Oh my goodness, this is scary. I liked it! Good ghosts, evil ghosts, what's going on?!
Winter now has 3 young men in her life: lifelong ghost friend, brother of longtime girlfriend, and new bad boy. Though she only has feelings for Garrett at the beginning, I'm curious about developments in future books.
RECOMMENDATION

FAVORITE QUOTES
Mom, "You two don't have to hang around here. You should go do something fun." [Shane and Winter have homework] "Winter will walk you to your car." She was a meddling meddler, that's what she was.
Garrett, "It's going to work out." "How can you know? Are you some kind of ghost fortuneteller?" "No. But I've been around long enough to know that good wins in the end." "Not in my experience." "That's because you've never reached the end."
Mom repeats, "Come downstairs, and visit." "Why?" "Because I said so? Maybe I have a huge sparkling surprise for you. Or maybe the people collecting teenagers who talk back finally arrived and they're going to carry you away."
"You are a creator. You tell stories. You might not think that what you have to say, or what you do, is important, but it is." “But it’s not the same as belonging with these artists who have written these stories so full of heart, it’s like they put their souls into them.” “You share pieces of yourself every weekend with the tourists who come to your cavern. Don't minimize that. There’s soul in your work, too. You just don’t see it, because it’s you. But everyone else sees it shining brightly."
POSSIBLE TRIGGERS (SPOILERS)
Sex: none
Language: none
Violence: man gets pulled toward pond, scary ghosts
The writing and editing was well done and appreciated. This is definitely worth reading. A nice mid afternoon distraction! I would enjoy reading more of the series.
Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!
Ms. Vane has followed up her wonderful Blood Flesh Bone Trilogy (trilogy plus one prequel, if you haven’t read it, it is great) with another winner!
Where to start, where to start! Nobody can accuse Ms. Vane of not having a truly different and unusual setting in this new series! What a cool concept! And so well done!
Ms. Vane writes with a style that is nobody else's but hers, but what she does accomplish with that style can indeed be compared to masters of the writing art. The believability and realism of her characters, particularly the teenagers, reminds me of the work of Christopher Pike, an author of whom I have been a fan for a number of decades.
The book flows very smoothly, never slowing down and never becoming boring. Within it are woven characters and places that very soon come to life. Add in the drama and horror, it becomes a book that more than holds your attention; it demands it.
I found the book to be fresh, original, and just plain fun. I look forward to the sequels.
Winter has always loved being in the caverns and telling her stories especially when people listen. When Winter tells a story people are mesmerized. Winter has found a friend, who lives in the caverns, a ghost actually.
One of Winter’s teachers goes missing and Winter believes that it may have to do with rumors that have been going around the school. She is not a sleuth but is set on finding out where her teacher is and what happened to him.
When I read the summary for Hollow Wishes I though yeah I got to read this one I had a few questions that could only be answered if I read the story. Like does Winter, as a tour guide tell stories that are true or legend from the caverns or does she make up her own stories. Another question I had was what was it like to be in love with a ghost? Yeah how does that one work out for her?
Hollow Wishes was very quick read that kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen next. When Winter was telling her stories it was very thrilling and chilling and I got so caught up in it so much so that it was like I could feel the chill in the air running through my bones. Oooh…..oooh…. I can’t wait to see if Winter has more stories to tell us.
If you like a good ghost story with a little mystery to solve then you are going to fall in love with this little gem, Hollow Wishes.
Winter is a young woman who is getting ready to graduate from high school. She works part time at her family's cavern. Giving tour's, and telling stories to the people on the tour. She's also in love. That wouldn't be strange, but she's in love with a ghost. She knows that nothing will happen between the two, but you can't help who you fall in love with.
All she wants to do is make her family's business better. To bring in more money so they can keep it open. When a new kid enrolls in school so late in the year. Strange things start to happen.
I found this story very entertaining. And would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good ghost story and teenage drama lol
