Hollywood Collection: Shirley Maclaine: Kicking Up Her Heels

 (46)7.551min200913+
Shirley MacLaine was the product of a strict middle-class background from which she and her brother, the future actor Warren Beatty, escaped into the fantasy world of show-biz. Her ballet training and her long-legged pixie charm led to rapid success on Broadway in musical comedy.

First of all, let me say that I love Shirley Maclaine’s work; I think that she is a fabulous actress, just fabulous. She was terrific in Terms of Endearment and Steel Magnolias. But I got a sense from this bio (which is more of an autobio), from her words and from her projection of herself that Shirley Maclaine is very much a child of her age. I doubt that she would like to be thus typecast, but there it is. You can clearly see the strong focus on individualism and the irreverence for traditional values that were some of the powerfully attractive themes of the 1960s and you can also see the New Ageism of the 1970s and 80s and following. She seems to see herself as specially chosen by the cosmos. For example, she makes the observation over and over that things just fell in line for her throughout her career. There’s no problem on the surface. It’s just that such an outlook can make one feel separate and apart, better than, mere mortals. I could be wrong, and certainly mean no offense.

the ultimate girl next door who could be sweet, sexy, pixie ish, a pal, a tomboy, very...talented and in the business for multiple decades. she was born to be an entertainer. i have loved every movie I've ever had the pleasure to see her in. the world does not make such people these days, maybe because Hollywood doesn't invest in its cattle call the way it dedicated itself to back then. nevertheless, she came up in a time where, studio made or not, she is truly, the ultimate star.

So wonderful! I had no idea the depth of fame this actress had. I LOVE the scenes they show while she is telling you her in her own words. It's very well done for 1996. I love they bring up "The Evening Star" and it's time for another documentary on her now where they follow her around making films, writing books, living life like all the greats get these days. She deserves more attention and admiration even if she doesn't care! Maybe that's why. She is a star's Star! LEGEND!

A favorite of mine who I've always admired, especially since she says it as it is instead of trying to impress anyone. Just wish this documentary contained more information, but due to the length of time, I guess it fulfilled its goal.

5.0 out of 5 starsShirley Maclaine is an Inspiration!

I've loved Shirley Maclaine since I was a kid, and she grows more interesting with every passing year. For me, it was fabulous to hear her speak about her childhood, early career, marriage and more. Her philosophy of life and view of her own destiny made her career possible. How wonderful to be your own woman, never compromise, fulfill your own destiny and inspire others to live life to the hilt... That is what makes this actress a true star -- and one to be absolutely admired!

Shirley Maclaine's life has always been intriguing as she has been one of my favorite actresses both on and off the screen. She tells it like it is and her forthright spunk is a joy to behold - always. It was a pleasure to see her acting and real life portrayed in this realistic compendium of her life.

Pure talent - it is innate - I can not believe though she states she was no beauty, she is gorgeous - always has been and still is. I remember when I was younger, my aunt talked about some form of meditation - and about Shirley McClains philosophy. Cool life.. she has lived.
