This was a hilarious read. My 5-year-old son loves to listen to books, and he and I both enjoyed the six stories in this book. Each story was short enough to read in about fifteen minutes, which is great when reading to a wiggly boy! There were some more old-fashioned words that I had to explain, but that just means his vocabulary expanded.
My son has an extraordinary long attention span when it comes to books, so I think most 8-to-10-year-old kids, especially boys, would be the ideal audience for this book. Anyone old enough to read will also enjoy it, though. I did! Who wouldn't be entertained by stories about doughnuts containing diamonds, superheroes in car wrecks, and a boy and a skunk outwitting four theives?

My wife loved reading McCloskey's Blueberries for Sal to our kids when they were little. We weren't aware of Homer Price, which would also make for fun reading for kids as well.McCloskey's illustrations are delightful. Oh, one thing: in the first chapter ("The Case of the Sensational Scent") there are four robbers. Yet, in the scene where they are all in one bed, the illustration shows five robbers. I wonder why...
