Emily McIntire is an Amazon Top 20 best selling author of painful, messy, beautiful romance. She doesn’t like to box herself into one subgenre, but at the core of all her stories is soul deep love.

A long time songwriter and an avid reader, Emily has always had a passion for the written word, and when she’s not writing you can find her waiting on her long lost Hogwarts letter, chasing her crazy toddler, or lost between the pages of a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant reimagining of Hook
By The Romantic Rush Blog on September 7, 2021
WHAT AN ADVENTURE! Emily McIntire has taken her pixie dust and completely transformed the playful story of Peter Pan into a transfixing and sensual sensation, but one that still beats with her trademark heartfelt authenticity. This is by far one of the most creative and delicious modern-day renditions of a beloved classic, one that sparkles with the effortlessly emotive and poignantly evocative writing style I’ve come to associate with the incredibly talented Emily McIntire- just with with a darker, delicious edge. I was mesmerized from start to finish- by far one of my favorite reads of 2021!

As far as retellings go, this is most certainly more of a reimagining of the Neverland classic, one where Emily has reconceptualized the very ethos of the story. Instead of the focus being on the beloved, but also myopic and ever petulant boy wonder Peter Pan, this is a coming of age story that recenters the narrative on the beloved Wendy, the dutiful and caring Darling that finds the most unexpected adventure- and in doing so finds her voice and herself. Emily beautifully plays with that theme- only now our Wendy is a young heiress so the Neverair (wink wink) corporation, a young woman lost in her own life, unsatisfied, unrealized, and unseen. Only unlike the sugary classic, our Wendy finds her adventure at the hands of the notorious Hook-and what a triumph he is. Emily has taken the Peter Pan-Hook dynamic and completely flipped it on it’s head- a story about the boy who wouldn’t grow up has become a very grown up story indeed, one not just about Wendy but about Peter’s arch-nemesis- but you’ll won’t find a Disney depiction of the simmering, laughable foe in these pages. The Captain is reborn as the dark, moody, mysterious alpha anti-hero James - a man scarred in more profound ways, a man with a more compelling thirst for revenge. One that conveniently brings him to the alluring Wendy- and let’s just say these two find more than just happy thoughts with each other. But what happens with revenge conflicts with the matters of the heart? Tick tick tick….

Move over Peter Pan, there is a new hero in Neverland- and he’s ALL man. Hook as a character is truly a triumph- Emily has recreated him with so much depth, a raw and gritty edge paired with a compelling vulnerability that makes him magnetic. I am madly in love with this anti-hero, a stock villain transformed into a swoony, but broken leading man. Emily brings such tenderness to his character arc - so much so, that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to think about Captain Hook the same again. Not to mention, this man is sinfully sexy- and his dirty talking would make any sailor blush. His character evolution is heartbreakingly beautiful- intense and exquisite. And Wendy, she’s created as so much more than the straight-laced caregiver than finds some fun. This Wendy has the loyal and selfless charm of her original inspiration, but she’s also sassy, vibrant, resilient, and most importantly, relatable. She’s just a young woman trying to find her voice, her power, her way in a world full of Lost Boys. Emily lets her be the hero of this story- as she finds that in the hands of the villain only then can she truly fly. Together these two are profoundly engrossing-a consuming chemistry that is equal parts heart and heart. The energy between them was both delicious and charming-because they both heal and empower the other. They find themselves in each other's arms, and that’s the magic- when you want the villain to get the girl.

Emily has so much brilliant and clever referential content that is sprinkled throughout this story- from the crocodile to the tick tick tick, the occasionally helpful but forever envious Tinker Bell, Hook’s infamous ship, Peter’s shadow and his love of flying, and of course the much beloved Smee and Starkey from Hook’s crew. We even have the iconic blue dress, the edgy Lost Boys, the Tiger Lilly, Jon, and a delicious way to integrate the “darling” of Wendy. Emily even gives a cheeky nod to the creator of Hook and Peter himself. She even finds a way to integrate my favorite Hook quote of all time. Hard core Pan fan or not, you’ll marvel at the brilliant ways Emily has paid homage to the original while totally reinventing it entirely. Expect heartbreak, healing, jaw-dropping moments, and SO much steam.

I was legitimately HOOKED by this story. Truly, I could not put it down. But what I loved most is how Emily played with the themes of the original story and elevated and evolved them. Whereas the original juxtaposed the drolls of adulting with the magic of imagination, Emily instead gives us a new lens on growing up. One about recognizing the “grey” of our humanity, about accepting that we all have dark and lightness- one that embraces that our morality isn’t fixed but rather a matter of perspective and choice. And that the greatest choice of all is love- and that, well that is the adventure of a lifetime. An adventure worth pursuing, straight on ‘til morning. Truly brilliant, Emily- I could not love this more! And I can not WAIT for more in this series!
