Forget everything you think you know about tropes. The author does a fantastic job of illustrating that not only do the obvious tropes exist in entertainment media, but if you dig deeper, you see a fast treasure trove of tropes bubbling beneath the surface.

She does a fantastic job of breaking down the bigger genres into their tropes, proving that, honestly, all genres share the same story beneath the trappings of the genre. It's about characters and tropes and GMC.

With humor and a deft touch, she explains how to find tropes, twist them, wiggle them, jig them to work for you in a story, and, most importantly, that not all tropes are All Important. Many secondary tropes can do some heavy lifting, too, to create compelling stories that readers will lap up like sugar.

This book is going into my writer toolkit.

I thought that this was an interesting idea, so I downloaded a sample. I'm a single mom, so I never buy books I'm uncertain about. The sample only contains the table of contents and shows nothing of the writers style or how the information is presented. Also, my eye is still twitching from having seen 'The Shining' spelled as 'The Shinning' in the table of contents. It wasn't a typo. It occurs twice. Now THAT is horror...

I love tropes. I love reading and learning about them and how they are utilized in books and movies. As a writer, I'm always studying and trying to improve my craft. This thesaurus is a treasure trove. It covers all kinds of horror tropes with a break down of examples of how popular movies/books used them. It's a perfect compliment to her Trope Thesaurus.

I thought Ms. Hilt's The Trope Thesaurus had it all, then I was shown there are so many more layers to tropes. Horror brings to mind the scary creature chasing us through the woods, but the author of this book shows the monster in a horror movie or book is so much more than what we see. Then she teaches how to twist tropes to create deeper stories and more developed characters. This is a must-read for not only horror writers, but for any other who wants to learn how to write complex characters the easy way. Dark romance authors, paranormal romance authors, urban fantasy authors...and the list goes on. This trope thesaurus is a tool every author needs even if you don't write horror. Why? Because every story has a monster in it. Even if they can't be seen.

Great job, Ms. Hilt!! I can't wait for the next!

Good writer's tool.
At least someone who consider Korean's storytelling, which is far most creative with tropes than western culture.
I definitly recommand the series and have already pre-ordered the Romance book.
I hope the author will continue to include some K-drama (or maybe C-drama if she does a Fantasy book) or consider to add a Korean stories book to the collection as more and more writers take Korean storytelling as a good example of how an entertaining story should be but ressources on it are really limited.
