Editorial Reviews

"A merry, witty celebration of chaos and grumpiness." -Kirkus

"Higgins's caricatured artwork delights in the resulting chaos as possums throw a pillow fight, a beaver chows down on the kitchen table, and a frog gets comfy in the toilet." - Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Ryan T. Higgins ( is the author/illustrator of Mother Bruce. He does NOT live with four geese, but he and his family do live with a tortoise and a menagerie of other pets. At one time or another, Ryan has been friends with a porcupine, a raccoon, a beaver, dozens of mice, and a couple of squirrels, but he has never found a moose in his bed. He always peeks under the covers, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone has a Bruce in the family.
By Friedeien on October 19, 2016
I bought this book based on the title. (My husband’s name is Bruce.)
It’s hilarious. I am buying another copy immediately to send to our grandchildren.
My husband has a near pathological problem with visitors in our home. Family. Friends. Doesn’t matter. His home is his castle and he prefers to be alone. This has been a bone of contention throughout our marriage. We have a large home and can easily entertain overnight guests. I imagined a home where people could drop by unannounced or by invitation and by made to feel welcome and loved. A retreat. A “hotel” of sorts. Nope. My husband has gone so far as to clap his hands loudly and announce that “THE PARTY IS OVER!” or walk by a gathering of my book club friends and markedly point at his wristwatch. It’s laughable and embarrassing.
I got the book yesterday and skimmed through it reading out loud to Bruce. Laughing, I joked that I’d written in. For a half second, he believed me. Even he found the humor in it. My Bruce. My Eeyore.
