Wierd version of this book

This review is only about the format and not about the story. This version is not formatted with chapter numbers or names or breaks, confusing the flow. Also there are "illustrations" of Egyptian scenes (!?!?!) for the first third or so of the book then they stop. I recommend choosing a different version of this book.

The success of the story is its ability to draw the reader in. As a reader, you feel like you want to warn the protagonist or to shake her. She is so misguided. The characters are well drawn and the inevitabiIity of the conclusion frustrating. I can't say more without being a spoiler. It's a bit too long but it's quite understandable why this is a classic.

I'm not a great fan of early 1900's writing, as the authors of that era used words I've not been privy to. However, I was mesmerized by this story, and forged through. This was a great look at how we perceive life based on our upbringing. Lily was a dreamer who got caught up in high society and paid the price for it. But in the end principles and morals won out. Loved it.

I have only read 54% (kindle!) so far. It is not my choice but on the book club list I belong to for next month. I am intrigued as to where the plot is going and is a very detailed insight of the lives of the very rich in New York in the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. However the style of writing is very old fashioned and some times it takes a paragraph to describe the characters feelings when a sentence would do. It is very clever but too clever for me really. I imagine it would make a better film (Julian Fellowes rewrite?) than a book.
