I am crying out of pure joy. I couldn’t put it down. I just read and read and read, and then I reached the end and got the absolute best shocking twist in the world. Sarah has outdone herself in her story telling and has intertwined two of her most loved and adored series. I cannot wait for the next book, and I’m going to be re reading every book she’s ever published in preparation for the 3rd book to the Crescent City series. Absolutely amazing. As always, Sarah J Maas has exceeded expectations completely and created an entire universe that can be compared to Marvel and DC comics, in the way she has taken two separate stories and characters and connected them seamlessly. A job well done!!!!

For the first half of the book Bryce is trying to lay low and live peacefully. However, it is revealed that there is a rare fae Danika worked with who allegedly knew information that could help them in the fight against the asteri. For about 600 pages we’re taken on a wild goose chase that leads to what appears to be dead ends. The book relies heavily on past and current relationships to propel the plot forward. One thing I was disastisfied with is it seemed in the previous book hypoxia would be paired with a certain character. For no apparent reason it’s thrown out the window for this new person who I believe was just for shock value. Also, we follow connors lil brother through his grief and him trying to determine if Connor really met a peaceful fate in the after life. Some of these events in no way propelled the plot forward. By the 80% mark of the book nearly every man character has been paired off with no build up and is just plopped in there for shock value. The book foreshadowed a pair with Connors lil brother and potential a new alpha. Ethan now has interest in what appears to be a dragon shifter. This book honestly was all over the place and a hot mess. The most interesting aspect of the book was learning about the princes of hell and the role they played in the past war. Besides this, it was agonizing making my way through this book. I’m a truly Sarah j. Maas fan and earth and blood I thought was set up to establish the plot and introduce the character but it feels as though in this book new characters are just plopped in with no true value. I personally would have loved to learn more about jesiba, the princes from hell, and a greater extent of Bryce and her brothers abilities. Instead we tune into a love island. Also, I know a lot of people ship hunt with Bryce but I personally don’t see it. They have no chemistry to me and this is possibly the worse pairing yet. Maybe I’m biased but the throne of glass series is much better and Aelin a more interesting character to read about. Bryce history and her past is very base level and I feel like for as long as this book was the things we learned weren’t a good payoff. Lastly, I’m tired of the Danika plot line and the wolves unless she’s going to bring them back to life it’s time to move on. Once again the plot is focused on more of Danikas secret motivations and what she was doing and plotting while Alive. This is a lot for someone who died in book 1 and is not returning. It’s like every book revolves around her secrets which is the basis of how Bryce begins researching Lost knowledge and things that aren’t meant to be know. I may give the third book a try but it has to be a vast improvement. Focus more on the lore of the creatures, weapons, and alliances. Also, the ending seemed just an excuse to merge worlds a ala spider man no way home kinda deal.

The first book had a great plot with foreshadowed titular moments, great character weakness and growth, and moved me to laughter and tears. This book felt paltry and threadbare in comparison.

In the House of Sky and Breath, by Sarah J. Maas, we pick up Bryce and the gang trying to live normal lives after the past spring. They are ensnared in a rebel plot that fizzles out into unimportance and morphs into another secret Danika crusade.

Things I liked:

Maas's writing style is still strong and the actual reading of prose is easy and vivid.

There seems to be some more diversity albeit ambiguous at times.

Things I didn’t like:

Bryce and Hunt's relationship felt like a repackage of Feyre and Rhys. I really liked their development last book, but in this one, it felt uninspired and stale.

The plot was kinda boring and not well foreshadowed. Bryce would somehow figure things out, do stuff without anyone knowing, and then go into a lengthy explanation on how she accomplished it. A lot of the plot reveals felt like they should have been developed better.

Everyone was in love with someone, romance that seemed to be set up in the previous books changed for “shock” value, and so many people still flirting/wanting Bryce. Felt very YA and not adult.

I did not like the reveal in the last chapter. I thought this series was fresh and new and that chapter ruined it for me.

Lots of POV, some switching within chapters, and some of the POV felt unnecessary. I would have preferred to learn more about the sprites, Jesiba, Fury, etc. There was a lot introduced in the last book I would have loved to learn about instead.

This book was not nearly as layered or well-plotted as the first and honestly, for an 800-page book, not much happens to move the plot forward. Hopefully, the next book can return the hype for me, but after the last chapter, I’m not inclined to believe it.

SJM's worldbuilding in this and ToG is very good for something that is not quite *high fantasy*. But God, I cannot get over the clunky, corny lines of these characters, the repetitive "mate" trope, the repetitive sex scenes, all of the supposed-to-be-sassy but actually extremely cringey lines by Bryce. I want to like this book as much as others like this book, but even the ending (no spoiler) felt like a cheap addition to keep the money rolling in. SJM's downward spiral (for me) started with the absolute trash that was ACOSF, and this book is kind of going down that path with the very, very, very recycled sex scenes, even the lines.

I'm not gonna read Hunt saying "look at you" to Bryce glowing like a star. That's been done, when Feyre glowed with Rhys. Why am I re-reading the same exact scene? And this is not the only one, that just stuck out to me because it happened twice. Along with "dark chuckles" "growls" "skitters" on and on and on and on

This one was really tough to get through because the plot is really not interesting. It's told from too many characters perspectives to bulk it up and those characters aren't particularly exciting. Waay too drawn out. Not much chemistry between the characters either which might just be because she doesn't stay on one characters story long enough for you to be particularly committed to what happens to them. Characters all keeping secrets from each other makes it tough to get into. Annoyed because I have to read the next book because of the last chapter. Bit cheeky to use your previous good book series to make people read your new boring one. I genuinely don't know how this is getting so many positive reviews. I absolutely loved her previous A Court Of Thorns and Roses series. This one just really doesn't live up to the same standards.

I honestly didn’t think CC2 could surpass CC1. And while parts are seemingly off at a tangent, Maas always makes the tangents count.

Bryce is a formidable friend that I’d definitely love to have. I love that she screws up as much as hitting the mark. Some of the sex scenes have a delightful clumsiness to them, so it’s not all perfect romance and has a more real edge (despite it being utterly fictitious).

I have had to put this book down on occasion, not because it wasn’t captivating, more because I’ve had to process some of the twists or mentally preparing for the event that’s sure to tug at my emotions.

The climax of the book is heart wrenching and elating.

I am unbelievably excited for the next book! Congratulations Sarah J. Maas, this book is a triumph.

I am speechless. This book is an incredible second addition to this series and full of surprises and twists I wasn’t expecting. I feel like I know all the characters intimately in the way that Sarah does better than anyone else. The way she builds relationships and insights into characters is like nobody else. This is going to be a truly epic series. Sexy as hell, fast paced and just basically incredible. I have included a photo next to Kingdom of Ash, could this series actually surpass the last two… I would not have believed it possible but I think it might. Best writer in the known universe. The wait for the next instalment will kill me, no doubt I will have to reread this at least twice and, well, what the hell, why not reread the TOG and ACOTAR again while I am at it. Sarah J Maas, living legend, does it again!

Sofie, is about to die with one vital piece of “information hidden in her head, information that could very well be the final piece of this war against the Asteri. The blow that could end it all” and so Bryce, Hunt and Ruhn try to unearth the corruption and the devastating truth that cost Danika her life in the last book and now Sofie in this story. This is not a spoiler as it happens in the first chapter but sets up a storyline that will continue well into the book.

As worlds collide and the Houses of Crescent City seek to take control, the treachery and danger takes us to the city ships of the queen’s court, the seven levels of hell and the orrery planet solar system as reluctant alliances are forged to prevent the Asteri taking control. However, with an order from the Asteri to lie low or endure a penalty of death, the crew must carve out a strategy where the stakes are high, the game is at a different level, and the people only too willing to betray the daughter of the King of the Autumn Court too numerous. Ignoring the request from her father to strengthen the alliance with the House of Avallen, by marrying Cormac, her cousin, Bryce is left isolated except for her lover and ‘mate’ Hunt and brother Ruhn.

Tormenting, imaginative, spellbinding, a fabulous case of brinkmanship, and totally immersive. A book I read over two days and up to ‘stupid o’clock’ in the morning to finish, because I hankered to know how it would all end, and what an ending it was - but no spoilers here!!!! And my advice is please do not read reviews that contain spoilers because the element of surprise will leave you speechless.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said, but if you have read the first book you are in for an unbelievable ride, if you haven’t read The House of Earth & Blood and love all things fantasy with strong female leads and totally yummy males this series is a must. But darlings, darlings for those who want some idea of what you are in for strap yourself in you are in for an exhilarating unbelievably bumpy ride. There are so many twists and turns, this nothing like Earth & Blood, you barely catch your breath when you hurtle off in a totally different direction. There is nothing boring about this book and there is 801 pages that should come with chains to hold it down. There is of course the usual suspects, some new and welcome ones, ones we have only heard about but never met some of them are really really unwelcome and some are surprising. Never in a million years will you guess the ending, some things I guessed some things I think I have guessed but I’ll bet my last haribo that SJM will laugh in our faces with the twists that she is planning for her next book, I suspect manic laughing from her as she came up with the twists in this book. This series is a marvel the best series yet and I loved the others.
