A relief to read excellent writing

The story is excellent, in plot, though, and this is the only fault I might find, the denouement was perhaps slightly abrupt, The writing is exquisite, as one comes to expect from an Eloisa James novel. I have recently had the sad misfortune to have read several romance books lately in which there are so many malapropisms that it is painful to be jerked out of the story to try to figure out what the author was getting at. That is never a problem with an Eloisa James novel. It is so relaxing to be able to settle into a book and know that the ride to come will be enjoyable. This book in particular held a beautiful tension in the anticipation, a bit more prolonged relationship development, more believable in that the love story develops over time, and with genuine efforts from both parties to get to know the other. The hero was patient demonstrating a key component of true love. The obstacles felt real to the story, and not contrived. The heroine was reasonable, while guarded, a refreshing combination. I feel like I learn a bit of history, or get a fresh perspective on history each time I read an Eloisa James novel, which as a lover of history is particularly enjoyable,
I rarely write book reviews, but I have been waiting for some time for this book since I preordered it and am genuinely delighted having read it. Though a bit sad too, as I have read all Eloisa James other novels and good writing takes time, so I know it will be a while before the next one. This novel is a good example of a good novel being worth the wait though.

This 5 star romance was an utter delight. I fell in love with the main characters Cleo Lewis and Jake Astor Addison as soon as I read them on the page. Banter that was witty. Fierce personalities that were engaging. And a friends to lovers romance that smoldered under the surface. I loved the premise of Cleo, a successful business woman, forced into having a season by her estranged grandfather, a viscount. She does her best to hide her beauty under garish clothing. Enter Jake who wants to buy her friend's business and movie it to America - of all places. This is where they first clash but later become friends and, eventually, love blooms. I cannot wait to see how the series continues. Run, do not walk to your book vendor of choice and pick up this gem!

It’s a happy day indeed when Eloisa James releases book one of a new series. I will admit to some small concerns at the very beginning (too much Gussie and too much mothers voice from beyond) but that resolved very quickly and the book is soon into Cleo and Jake’s love story.
I won’t retell the plot as many others have done so in much better style than I’d manage! But I loved how quickly Jake was smitten and I loved how Cleo came to her own true-self realizations by being so sensible and by understanding the man she had fallen in love with. No unnecessary angst between these covers and for that, Eloisa James, I salute you! Loved revisiting Merry and Trent and very much enjoyed the side characters. I’m eagerly awaiting book 2.

In my opinion this is one of Eloisa James’s weakest novels. I usually love her writing - it’s fresh humour, use of irony, varying types of comedic structure, characters and character development etc etc. This book failed on most counts - about a quarter of the way through I almost gave up - and only hope for improvement and genuine puzzlement about how poor the book was for EJ, kept me going. There are moments of charm and flashes of the prior joy EJ’s characters could bring to the page. Maybe it’s time for the author to try something different - a different genre or historical period, something to shake things up a bit. Must be hard producing a lot of books in the same genre and maintain fresh characters and plots.

I found Cleopatra Lewis quite irritating at the start of the story—just couldn’t get my head around her desire to wrap herself in ghastly clothes—but she mellowed as the story progressed and meantime her romantic interest Jacob Astor Addison, Jake, made up for her. Overall, I enjoyed this story and, while it wasn’t Eloisa James’ best ever book, it was a good read and a nice start to her new series.
