If you’re buying this book, chances are you belong to a select group of parents with a child who, as polite people like to say, is “a handful”. My son really enjoys this book, and while I have no qualifications whatsoever to be a child psychologist, or a parent for that matter, I am pretty sure the reason is because he is able to see himself so much in the dinosaurs’ bad behaviors (slamming doors, throwing toys, not listening in general ), but isn’t made to feel shameful about them. It helps him kind of look at those behaviors from an outsider’s perspective and how silly they seem, then offers an alternative way to manage anger- which makes much more sense and is more easily digestible when it’s for someone else. Like, obviously, the dinosaur should clean up the mess they just made, make amends with a kitty, and find out that they are a lot happier and able to have much more fun when they handle their anger differently.
Anger is not a bad thing, it is natural and necessary, what’s not necessary and what’s not Acceptable is how we sometimes express that anger (shut up, this book is for my child, not me). This book does a good job of showing that the solution is not to just simply suppress anger, but to manage it differently. Good luck with your little handful! And if your yih d child seems to have behaviors typical of ADHD, look into Proprioceptive seeking dysfunction
