And boom - she completely calmed down. She sat next to me without saying anything, but I could tell, she was finally feeling what she was feeling -- rather than being upset and fighting to claim her right to feel what she was feeling, if that makes sense. And that was that. She stopped being upset and ate her broken candy cane.
There are so many other examples like this -- the 'one word' tip, the 'describe it/don't tell them what to do' tip, the 'write a wish list together' tip... I could go on. They really work!
However, the practical advice is good. I have a 3yr old and have applied some of it to her. Interestingly, I’ve used this book more with my 6th grade students. I have one student who is REALLY struggling with her family and is now acting out in school. The ideas in this book have helped me to connect with my student, such that she asks me for advice, corrects her behavior willingly, and confides in me when things at home get scary.
But nothing worth doing is easy.
Making use of these skills takes real work, you will probably have to change a lot about how you approach things, and you'll have to stop and think things through before you react to many situations.
You may not see immediate changes in you or your kids, real change takes time.
And a lot of what is outlined in the book is counter intuitive to a person raised by more conventional means.
Basically, a good book that I really valued, and I'll have to read again to make full use of.

I have always been a strict parent, I have high expectations of my boys, myself, my husband... I have been going about reaching those high expectations the wrong way all my life it would appear! Having read the first few pages, it was clear that my attitude needed a drastic rethink. I tried to put the suggested teaching to work and instantly my eldest responded well. I can see him growing in confidence before my eyes and he's started talking openly about his life. I am humbled. Even the woman who knew everything, didn't. I'm still learning, and so are my family, but these two ladies have persuaded me that their way is better than mine ever was. It's not easy, and I forget easily, slipping into my old habits, but I believe this something really worth working at. I can't recommend it highly enough.
The best part was .... One morning my 10 yes hero stood in front of me with this book in his hands and said... U have become polite coz u r reading this book, I have read.. It is about handling kids....
I thought what next now enemy has known my secrets. ...
Keep reading.. And enjoy
Good so far as the text is concerned. My complaint is in a kindle format, pictures and their dialogue boxes are too small and not adaptable to enlargement. There are a lot of such pages in this book.
