The story is decent, no where near planet Hulks story. The art is just flat out bad. Doesn't gel with the atmosphere of the story. I can't stress enough how bad this art is. I had to FORCE myself to finish this book because of this artist John Romita Jr. 🤦♂️
It's laughable.

Best Hulk Art ever.
JRJR IS THE MAN
There's a whole book of set up - Planet Hulk - but it's neatly summarized in this book. A group of heroes, tired of the Hulk's rage, shot him into space into what they thought would be a paradise world. It wasn't. After fighting for his survival there, Hulk won and has returned with an army to seek revenge.
The Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the US Army throw everything at the Hulk but to no avail. One by the one the heroes of the Marvel Universe fall and a good chunk of New York is leveled as we watch the final epic battle.
There are some minor problems, it's hard to believe that a genius like Reed Richards or a sorcerer with a wealth of powers like Dr Strange can't think of more ways to stop the Hulk than we see. And the ending is a bit pat, with everything restored to the status quo. But it's still a fun slug fest with a lot of emotion and heart.
The only real flaw is that this is a serial book set in the Marvel Universe so in the end, everything is put (more or less) right. And somehow no one is killed or even seriously hurt. But that's the price of reading a book set in the main universe and if you're a long time comic reader like me, you might snarl at it, but you accept it as well.
So yes, I recommend it.
What you've read above is essentially the entire plot. There are no Marvel Universe-shaking events here, no outstanding character development. Only action and destruction as the Hulk tears apart most of the Marvel Universe. If you know that going in, as I did, then this is a terrific volume with old-school battles in the city. I can't even really give away any plot points because there is nothing really to give away. The Hulk shows up. Beats everyone up. Then finally calms down. That's pretty much it. And it works.
The art is the true selling point here. John Romita Jr. has taken a lot of unfair criticism over the last few years for his artistic style, and I'll admit that while I think of him as a comic book God, some of his later work has been off. Not here. This is the best work he has done in many years. So much better than Wolverine: Enemy of the State and AvX. He seems to really be able to capture the rage of the Hulk (see also The Return of the Monster) and he also draws some awesome aliens.
So, if you don't mind a rather one-note story, but want truly great art, this is the volume for you!

This is quite a great arc and the other side of the coin for Planet Hulk in a lot of ways in my opinion. I'm not sure if I have preference over one or another, probably Planet Hulk since it's more creative, had to create a new world with new characters and get us to see these characters develop and grow. We don't really see that with World War Hulk. However World War Hulk isn't meant to be that I don't think, Where Planet Hulk is about creating a new world while telling a great story and introducing new characters with depth, World War Hulk isn't so much about story it's about action and feels more like a classic Hulk arc, not much story and lots of fighting and action. I don't think World War Hulk needs much story, you already know the story and the purpose of this collection. I personally am a fan of John Romita Jr but I preferred the art from Carlo Pagulayan but what Romita Jr does is solid and is just personal preference.
I'm not a huge Hulk fan but what Greg Pak, Carlo Pagulayan, and John Romita Jr have made in Planet Hulk and World War Hulk are truly special and in my opinion are essentials for any fan of Hulk or comic fans in general, if you want to keep your collections of Hulk to a minimum at least make sure it's these two you own. These are worth every penny and I wouldn't hesitate buying these after enjoying both as much as I did.
Hope you found this review helpful and happy reading.

This is about Hulk making the world pay. Any Hulk fan knows that the angrier the hulk gets the stronger he gets and he has never been angrier. This is a Hulk of pure rage, even Banner fights when he is forced forward and that just shows how thoroughly this is a story about loss.
The Hulk never comes across as unfair, only willing to bring back what they caused him. There is a question of if he is bringing his rage to others unduly but when it comes down to it all the characters on Hulk's side know that 1. many of the marvel heroes deserve it for something they have done and 2. they are going to be damned no matter what but they are with the Hulk because he deserves his revenge. It all ends in the epic showdown of Hulk vs Sentry which has to be read to be believed, in a seriously good way.
This is an excellent comic and is very sad. I would have liked to see the 'event' at the end of Planet Hulk not happen all together but que sera. the last few comics are what ifs if things had gone different ways and they are interesting to see almost the road of good intentions and what the Hulk is to others.

This is a real treat for Marvel fans, the ultimatum the Hulk gives means that nearly every hero in the Marvel universe is mobilised to stop him, as a result, nearly everyone gets to see their favourite character. I personally loved the showdown between Iron-man & the Hulk, with some of the best frames of animation I have seen in a comic (see my uploaded frames - no spoilers) for a long time. Loved the appearance of The Sentry and the script is well-written and intriguing (Greg Pak) whilst the illustration is fantastic (John Romita Jr.). It shows a side of the Hulk that is more than just rage and ultimately it sets the scene for the Red Hulk . Worthwhile for Marvel fans and must-read for Hulk fans, highly recommended!
