I am not going to bore you with how I think this book is awesome because it is, or how I cannot wait for book 3, because I cannot. But what I am more interested in expressing to everyone who reads this post is how brilliant of an author, Elise Kova, is. To date, Anne Rice, was one of my favorite authors (R. I. P.) and since her passing, I had no one that could burden the weight of being my next champion and after this book, I was like, Elise, you are it. I have read all of her books minus the last two, because I am in this series, but if you question reading this author, do NOT! She is bad ass. Great job Elise, on winning me over. My only complaint is that I have to wait to 2023, for book 3 😡 Oh well, it is what it is 🅰️🅿️💯

I was under the assumption that since the 4 Solaris’ traveled to Meru, we would witness this “tournament” with lots of spell binding actions. Instead, what I got, was earth shattering, mind blowing, all consuming plots, laid before Eira before the tournament. Plots thwarted at every single turn, that poor eira was always right in the center of. Eira is a fighter, who just so happens to not follow the rules, which benefits her to the fullest since she seems to be the only one who will be able to stop Ferro and his zealots. Just like all of Elise books, this one is one of my new favorites. It’s paced beautiful, never rushed, always in just the right amount of beautiful details.

I love how Eira’s character has overcome so much, but still has a lot of growing to do as she deals with her past traumas and the challenges before her. She is powerful but also a bit reckless. I really liked how the recklessness brought her down a notch on the perfect scale, but also allowed her to gain information and opportunities that no one else could.

A HUNT OF SHADOWS is a thrilling fantasy filled with incredible magic, secret societies, intrigue, danger, adventure, and romance. It will have you turning pages all night as you yearn to discover that next secret and die for the next romantic interaction.

My favorite thing about Elise Kova's books is that she very rarely takes the predictable path. You go into her books thinking you know the general gist of what will happen, but you don't. You can't. There is no way to predict what will happen next. In this entire book, there was only ONE plot point that worked out in a way that was predictable at the beginning. The rest was a complete surprise. I can't wait to find out what happens next, because I can guarantee I have no clue what that will be!

Where do I even start? Firstly, maybe the weight of my expectations was too high, as I really loved the first book. That story had mystery, charm and interesting characters, as well as a great lead character. This second book had none of this. The story lurched from one clunky plot device to another, with little cohesion. I lost count the number of times a key character dismissed a crucial element of the story in an unconvincing manner only for it to have disastrous consequences that would have been easily averted - there was no flow, and no thread of plausibility running through the story. The main character has become arrogant, unstable and unlikeable, and entirely different from how she was in the previous book - she is constantly reckless and not in a bold, heroic way, but with no consideration of her obligations or loyalty to her friends. She’d have been lobbed out of the Court of Shadows on day 1. I do understand that this is a crossover book into an existing story, but it isn’t an easy merger.I lost patience with this at around 33%, I really didn’t like Eira, the story line or the story telling. I did finish it, but had several points along the way where I nearly gave up. Oh, I’m sure the jumble will coalesce into some sort of order at some point before a fascinating denouement - but I’m not sure that I want to tag along for the ride.

It was a show to see Era's character gain confidence and unfold to her best. I loved the building friendships between girls and maybe Cullen too.
It was a delight reading this book and I enjoyed it, especially when the end promises so much more.
