This book was funny, had the steam, and the love. I love the chemistry between the characters, the strong female leads and the men who just need a bit of help.
"You know there's a legend here at Waylon about our famous bonfire party? Legend says the first person you kiss at the party is the one you'll never forget. It might be years later, and still their face is the one you dream about."
Cut to Valentine's night, two years later and Delaney is home nursing a broken heart after catching her footballer boyfriend since freshman year (Alex) in the act with a nasty piece of side work. Her remedy? A scary movie, her cat (Han Solo #2) and bottle of vodka plus a vow to never date a footballer again. But then Delaney gets an out of the blue text and with a vodka infused brain and nothing better to do she starts a dialogue with the mystery texter which was absolutely priceless. I mean how can you not love asking who the hell you're talking to and having them come back with:
"My name if Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
From there their text exchange is entertaining as hell. Deciding not to use real names, they know each other only as 'He-man' and 'Princess Leia'. From that initial seemingly random text, they start a long running texting relationship with Delaney many times finding herself thinking about He-Man. In the meantime, she's now single again and runs into Maverick Monroe on campus. His stardom as one to watch for the NFL and hometown hero in Magnolia has only grown and he's the object of every girl's pursuit. But what I really dug about this novel with the 'hot college star' was there's none of the usual girl pines over cool guy who eventually, eventually after much angst gives her the time of day. No, Maverick Monroe is all heart and it is he who chases Delaney Shaw and thinks the sun revolves around her. And he's not scared to show it. But Delaney, despite any attraction has sworn off footballers and the lifestyle that surrounds them after that break up and she's sticking to it!
Needless to say, that does nothing to veer Maverick off of going after her and not being the least bit phased to have anybody know. But what made Maverick even more swoon worthy was the sacrifices he will go to for his sister who suffers from a TBI which has left her seriously impeded. His mother is dead, his father an alcoholic that fails to take care of his younger sister, Raven, and Maverick takes it all on himself - academics, broken family, training, games, pursuit of Delaney and most of all, more important than anything, taking care of Raven no matter how thin he stretches himself or what he risks losing as long as his sister is okay. TBI's are no joking matter and his devotion while just a college kid with high expectations put on him and trying to jostle everything was swoon worthy. And his feelings and actions for Delaney just put him over the top for me!
There is drama and he makes some risky moves and in doing so has to lie to those he loves. But this guy has a heart of gold. I adored Maverick enough to want to have his babies, I absolutely loved Delaney and how she owned her nerd girl chic and was cool as hell and my heart went out to Raven -been through so much but so, so sweet.
This was such an enjoyable read for me and as a challenge book I had thought I was going to be gritting this one out. But it truly rocked. I loved the back story, I fell in love with the characters and the author did a great job with no unwarranted drama and unique characters that you couldn't help but invest in.
So here's to taking care of those you love, owning your sense of self-expression and men that prove stereotypes wrong!
***** 5 Buttercup stars!
This story is about two college students who met at a freshman bonfire party, are instantly attracted to each other, but do not approach each other until seniors.
Delaney has sworn off football players. Maverick has a hard time letting people into the struggled of his family life.
Together, they learn to look to each other and a future. Very cute. Recommend this book!
“This is our year.”
Hot jocks and nerds = reading bliss, make said hot jock a swoon worthy hero and you have romantic gold. I read this book in one sitting, it was fast paced and very entertaining. Ilsa Madden-Mills has kinda made high school romance her own and I Dare You is another great one to add to the collection.
I Dare You is Maverick and Delaney’s story. Delaney is a nerd, she always has her nose stuck in a book and is proud of it. Having just split from her jock boyfriend she has vowed to stay away from them for life and just concentrate on graduating. When Delaney first started college, she had a little run in with Maverick. Delaney was extremely embarrassed and has avoided him ever since. Now, years later it seems their paths are crossing once again. Will Delaney face it head on or will she do what she has been doing for years…running in the opposite direction?
“You know that moment when everything stops and the next breath you take is the first one of the rest of your life? That’s what it feels like as Maverick Monroe stares at me with his piercing blue eyes.”
Maverick is not your typical jock, even though that is what he portrays to keep the persona expected of him. On the outside he is cocky and arrogant, but on the inside, he is one of the most loyal people, protective, he has his head screwed on and the only person that has messed with that is…Delaney. Maverick hasn’t been able to get over his one and only encounter with Delaney. It seems the old folk lore is true, you never forget the first person you kiss on bonfire night, he certainly hasn’t. Maverick has been biding his time, now that Delaney is single, that time is up.
“Maybe I’ve been waiting two years for you to be free so I could ask you out.”
This was so much more than a college romance and the secrets that these two have are really the crux of everything. Everything that could make them… or break them. Ilsa Madden-Mills really delivers with a witty, yet emotional read that did have me in tears on more than one occasion. That is testament to the fantastic character connection. Both characters have had a rough life in some way or another, and if any couple deserve a happy every after it was these two.
“You’re everything I’ve ever wanted.”
Another great read from Ilsa Madden-Mills and I cannot wait to rea Ryker’s book. Ilsa Madden-Mills always manages to pull you into these college cliques and this was one I didn’t want to leave.
Please note the kindle copy ends at 56%, there is a bonus extended excerpt from Dirty English along with some recipes that pertain to I Dare You. I know how peeved I get when I think I have loads left to read and I don’t, so be prepared. I Dare You is a full-length novel though, you just get some yummy extras and if you haven’t read Dirty English, you need to!!

However, it turns out they’re not that different. The build up of their relationship through texts while she doesn’t know for definite who he is, even though she suspects, is nice to read. The build up is so full of feels it makes the steamy scenes even better.
There’s plenty of angst too, mainly caused by the issues in Maverick’s life. He’s got so much going on: trying his best to take care of his sister, win over Delaney, as well as become a pro footballer. The reader is on tenterhooks most of the time, waiting for it all to fall apart.
I’ve struggled finding much to write about. I enjoyed the book, but there was something missing and I don’t know what. There’s an adorable couple, great build up of tension, some nice steamy scenes, a good dose of angst, and a nice resolution for the HEA. I’ve given it four stars because it deserves it, but I’m not raving.
Delaney is super awesome, completely my spirit animal and just makes me so happy. She is the sexy nerdy girl who actually has a spine but has sworn off athletes as things have gone bad in the past.
Maverick is the bad boy athlete we all love to hate! He's arrogant and cocky but waaaaaaaay underneath here, you can actually find a heart.
I don't want to give too much away as I hate spoilers but I will tell you that there is a good amount of angst but not enough to cause you to want to cry. It's got some fairly hot scenes that I enjoy but for me, I just couldn't give it 5 stars as there are just some things that annoy me in books and this one was a trigger for me.
I will probably reread this book because I still enjoyed it!
Maverick is the all-star football player wanted by all. He has a goal in sight and is focused on getting to be a pro and finish out his college career. Although he has some secrets and ones that could smash his dreams if they are ever discovered. He has wanted Delaney ever since he laid eyes on her his first year at college but made a stupid decision and he missed his chance. Now in his final year at college and dealing with his father’s drunken binges and a sister that needs specialist care the last thing he thought he wanted was to get in to a romance but Delaney is now free and this time he’s determined he won’t miss his chance. Maverick is such a great character that you cannot help but fall in love with him, he is kind, protective, smart and oh so hot….
I totally loved Delaney from the first moment you meet her she is a nerdy bookworm with a heart of gold and can definitely be described as quirky. She has an obsession with star wars and a cat called Hans Solo, she’s a feisty independent woman who is recovering from a broken heart after she caught her boyfriend cheating on her with her arch enemy. She has decided that she’s done with athletes especially football players, although one kiss with Maverick still haunts her. She is not exactly miss popular so she’s shocked when Maverick starts showing interest in her but she eventually lets him in and realises not to judge a book by its cover. But will Maverick’s secrets destroy them before they have even begun????
It’s a great read, I loved the film references in this book and the epilogue is perfect.
I dare you was such a pleasant read. It was a great college romance that made me feel good but also brought tears to my eyes.
Delaney is a super nerd that designed her own clothes and she can quote any lines from Star Wars or the Princess Bride!
After a bad break up with a football player, Delaney swore that she would never get involved with any sport dudes … like NEVER!!
“Maverick makes me feel like I might toss aside everything I think about football players and give him a chance.”
However, when Maverick reappears in her life, she can only think about THE kiss and the legend.
“He’s perfection. He’s air. Which I desperately need right now, because I can’t breathe.”
Maverick… I LOVE HIM SO SO MUCH. He is arrogant, witty and so much more. The way he cares about his sister and his family, his devotion to his sister made me fall hard for him. He is the perfect package and the more Delaney gets to know him the more she realised that he is more than this hot sexy talented football star.
“We’re connected. Two stars in the black velvet sky. Two ships passing in the night.”
He never forgot the kiss they shared two years ago and he is determined to make Delaney his.
“You’re the one that got away, Delaney, the opportunity I missed.”
However, Maverick has to make choices to support his sister, will he put his career at risk? Can they get their HEA?
Adorable and endearing from beginning to end.
