For readers or listeners of Sister Souljah’s No Disrespect, Nathan McCall’s Makes Me Wanna Holler, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and Monster by Sanyika Shakur comes the definitive memoir from Ice-T, the acclaimed rapper and actor known for telling it like it is.
Ice-T offers his hip-hop generation’s Horatio Alger story: the narrative of an orphaned child who, drawn inexorably into a harrowing life of crime, ultimately turns away from the streets and, through self-discipline and a single-minded work ethic, forges a path to international fame as a musician and film-and-television star.
Ice-T was born Tracy Marrow in New Jersey. As an only child whose parents died when he was very young, he became involved in Los Angeles gangs before spending four years in the army. He released a string of groundbreaking West Coast rap records and formed the thrash-metal band Body Count. He currently stars as Detective Fin Tutuola on Law & Order: SVU.

Still, it was an overall a fantastic read and my respect for Ice T went up that much more after reading this.
I also agree with several other reviewers that the issue of regret or contrition seems blatantly absent from this account of a criminal life that transitioned to something better. He never expresses any real feelings of shame at hurting people financially, emotionally, or in any other way. So the impression one gets is not one of "Redemption", as the title states, but just a recounting of actions throughout his life that he is neither ashamed of, or has tried to make right. The only sense that the reader gets from the transitional aspect of this book is: I was slick, I got away with it, and even though most of my friends got arrested, jailed, or killed, I'm still living the good life. It comes off as more smug than truly self-analytical.
There is a curious dichotomy in his analysis of life. He is a brilliant commentator on society and the business world, as well as personal relationships. The breakdown of every business situation into pimps and ho's is inane and overly simplistic. His instincts of survival and the overall stories of having triumphed over a very harsh childhood are inspirational. He's a complex individual. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
Ice T fans this is worth it , I wish it went deep into his song concepts and albums but work buying.

People who like Ice T are probably interested to hear his criminal career, you wont find much about that in this book though.
