Don’t go in the water. It’s dark. It’s deep. It’s scary as hell.
There is no better keeper of secrets than the menacing, murky depths of the ocean. Unfathomable creatures, mysterious disappearances, abandoned ships, deadly pirates. Even experienced seamen are susceptible to the horrors that lay hidden far below the surface. It’s all a game of chance. Be in the wrong place at the wrong time and you’ll become something’s meal. The dark deep is ominous and unforgiving and it has no conscience. Do you dare tempt fate?
The Better Off Dead series delves into the farthest corners of your mind, where your deepest, darkest fears lurk. These masters of horror will haunt your dreams and stalk your nightmares, taking you to the edge of sanity before pushing you to the brink of madness!

About the authors
Steven Pajak is the author of novels, such as the U.S. Marshal Jack Monroe series, the Mad Swine trilogy, as well as short stories and novellas. When not writing, Steven works as an administrator at a university and COO, Managing Editor and Creative Director for Sinister Smile Press.
He continues to be an avid reader of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, John Saul, Richard Matheson, and many other favorite authors in the horror, suspense, thriller and general fiction areas.
Steven lives in the Chicagoland area with his wife and two teens.
David Rider is the author of "Tweakers, Crane Girl and the Semi-pocalypse" on Kindle, and the novel series We Are Van Helsing. He has also written several stories published by Sinister Smile Press. He is a member of the Horror Writers Association.
He grew up in Calumet City, Illinois, where the smiley-face water towers never looked the same after a leering stranger in a green sedan invited young David for a ride (which he declined).
He now lives with his wife and kids in a rural Midwestern town that has no smiling faces on the water towers…only the scowling faces of dark entities lurking within the surrounding cornfields.
He sometimes busts out a costume and Photoshop for pretentious author pictures.
For a young Scott Harper growing up in 1970’s Southern California, the world was just a tad dull and unimaginative. He found a creative outlet in the world of Marvel Comics, fervidly devouring the monthly adventures of Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America. Later, his tastes turned toward the Marvel black and white magazines’ more esoteric horror province, faithfully following titles such as Dracula Lives! and Tales of the Zombie. Influenced by these works and such great authors as Bram Stoker, John Steakley, and Marv Wolfman, Scott’s unique writing style combines horror and fantasy elements with superhero-style action. When not writing, Scott spends his time either reading, working out at the gym, adding to his model collection, or walking his two dogs. He lives in California with his wife and son.

R.E. Sargent is the author of three novels, four novelettes, and many short stories in the genres of suspense, supernatural, and horror. He is also an editor and a publisher. He is an active member of the Horror Writers Association, the Alliance of Independent Authors, and the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses. His short story, “Lucy,” was featured in the 2021 Splatterpunk Award–nominated anthology If I Die Before I Wake Volume 3 – Tales of Deadly Women and Retribution.
R.E. lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and their Chocolate Lab. And the rain. Lots and lots of rain. He is thankful that writing is an indoor activity.

Scotty Milder is a writer, filmmaker, and film educator living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He received his MFA in Screenwriting from Boston University, and his award-winning short films have screened at festivals all over the world, including Cinequest, the Dead By Dawn Festival of Horror, HollyShorts, and the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival and CthulhuCon. His independent feature film "Dead Billy" is available to stream on Amazon.com and Google Play.
His short fiction has appeared or will appear in Dark Moon Digest, KZine, Lovecraftiana magazine, as well as anthologies from Dark Peninsula Press, Sinister Smile Press, Dark Ink Books, and others.
He teaches screenwriting and film production at Santa Fe Community College, Sol Acting Studios, and the Seattle Film Institute. He is also the co-host of "The Weirdest Thing" history podcast with actor/theatre artist Amelia Ampuero.

S.R. Miller hails from the Midwest, but formative years playing Oregon Trail have led him to make the slow journey west, where he has somehow avoided dying of dysentery. Along with writing, his love of the arts has taken many forms, including playing guitar in heavy metal bands, and working with an indie game company. Author of the horror novel Sweet Dreams for Laura, he and his wife now call Oregon home.
Sinister Smile Press is a publisher dedicated to the publication of anthologies and collaborative novels focusing on themes of horror, supernatural, karma and vengeance. Creating nightmares is our business...and business is good!

Once an operating room registered nurse, Bridgett Nelson so enjoyed playing with human organs, she decided to turn her macabre interest into a horror writing career. She loves bubble baths (because nothing says spooooky writer like orange-scented bubbles), hates not knowing what’s swimming in the water with her, lives for Halloween season (but loathes chainsaw-wielding dudes in haunted houses), adores her West Virginia University Mountaineers, is very pro-Oxford comma, and thinks bananas are absolutely disgusting.
She was a 2022 Michael Knost "Wings" award nominee, and won second place (out of fourteen contestants) in the '22 Gross-Out contest at KillerCon in Austin, Texas.
Bridgett has contributed to multiple anthologies, including COUNTING BODIES LIKE SHEEP, edited by K Trap Jones. Her debut collection, A BOUQUET OF VISCERA, is available now!
More tidbits! Bridgett is a(n)…
HWA: WV Chapter co-chair. Editor. Audiobook proofer. Bookworm. Dog lover. Tarantula whisperer. Bra avoider. ENJF. Amaretto Sour obsessor.

Constantine E. Kiousis spends most of his time wandering through the worlds he has created, exploring every nook and cranny and constantly discovering new places and stories that need to be told. He is in the company of his fictional characters more often than he likes to admit, sharing in their ordeals and time of joy, and has had some very interesting conversations, as well as legendary arguments, with may of them.
He currently resides in Athens, Greece, plotting ways to unleash the terrifying stories hiding in his mind upon the rest of the world, one word at a time.

My top three favorites in this collection are:
The Ocean Provides; by David Rider. This relatable tale tells of a father’s unending devotion to his son and the ocean. His anguish at his young son’s brain tumor and unknowing fate is evident, and I truly disliked the mother character. The MC is likeable and believable and I loved that the author made orcas part of the story too.
By the Sounding Sea by Scotty Milder. I just loved this one because the premise is so totally wacky! Horrifying but wacky! 6 friends find themselves stranded on a deserted island where creatures made to look like their fantasies/imaginations take them into the ocean one by one, I mean, Angelina Jolie from Beowulf?? You gotta love that!
Pressurized by Andrew Hughes. The one shark story in this collection kept me on the edge of my seat. I have a terrifying but fascinating obsession with sharks so I really loved this one. It reads quickly and is very tense. I found myself rooting hard for Carmelo to make it. You will have to read the story to find out if he did!
All in all, I was completely blown away by ALL of the writers who submitted to this collection. I can’t wait for the next one!
