Love hurts
He promised to kill her. One night four years ago, Leah Carson's husband almost succeeded. Philip stabbed her 23 times before fleeing. The police are sure he's dead. But fear won't let Leah believe it.
And sometimes
It starts with little things. Missing keys. A flat tire. Mysterious flowers. All easily explained away if the pattern wasn't so terrifyingly familiar. Leah has a new veterinary practice and a new life with no ties to her nightmare. But Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent Alex Morgan suspects something. And when another woman's body is found, stabbed 23 times, Leah knows her past has found her.
It kills
As Leah and Alex untangle the horrifying truth, he watches her, ready for the perfect moment. Until death—that was the vow they made. And a killer always keeps his word.…

About the author

Mary Burton loves writing suspense, researching law enforcement and forensic procedures, morning walks, baking, books, and tiny dachshunds. She also enjoys hunting down serial killers, which she does in her New York Times and USA Today bestselling novels of suspense and romance. Library Journal has compared her work to that of Lisa Jackson and Lisa Gardner, and Fresh Fiction likened her writing to that of James Patterson.
Mary is routinely featured among the top twenty writers in Amazon’s Author Rankings for romantic suspense, and her recent novel The Last Move claimed the number ten fiction slot in the Kindle eBooks Store.
Research is a favorite part of Mary’s day. She never tires of learning more about police work, evidence collection and analysis. She’s known for taking a hands-on approach, whether it means interviews with professionals in the field, forensic seminars or lessons at the firing range.
A Richmond native, Mary has lived there for most of her life. She is a graduate of Virginia’s Hollins University and worked in marketing before she began writing full time. Her first book was published in 2000 and she’s now the author of thirty-four published novels, five novellas and four works of contemporary women’s fiction written as Mary Ellen Taylor.
A member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, Novelists, Inc., and Romance Writers of America, Mary is known for creating multiple suspense stories connected by characters, such as her recent The Forgotten Files novels. Her new book, Her Last Word, and The Last Move, break that mold.
When not traveling for research or visiting with readers at bookstores, book festivals and conferences, Mary remains very much a homebody. She and her husband spend time alternately enjoying and lamenting their empty nest and spoiling their four-legged babies Buddy, Bella and Tiki.

Alex was too robotic. I get the strong, stoic type, who can put aside emotions to get the job done, but it was too much. He's tough. We get it. Leah went through something awful and thought it was going to happen again, this time ending her life. At no point did Alex give her any physical reassurance. How hard is it to hold someone or give them a hug when they're terrified? Him softening his voice is not romance. Where are his layers? I get him being stone cold with others, but with a woman who arguably led him to rethink the notion of love at first sight? Also, his response to Leah being offended that their relationship started out as a lie, b/c he only pursued her for his investigation of Deidre was annoying. It's okay that he lied, b/c she lied about her attack being an accident??? So...him lying is comparable to her husband stalking her, stabbing her 23 times and her not wanting to open up about it when he grills her on their first date (and the only date they ended up having in this story)? In what realm? Overall, I liked him, but there were times, like those mentioned, I didn't, if that makes sense.
The inconsistencies were very distracting. The entire time it was detailed that Deidre's body was face-up when found and the crime scene investigated. Later, it's written that Leah pictured Deidre's body face-down in her blood. That's not what happened. She also finds a bug in her house, but doesn't say anything b/c Alex needs his rest in the hospital? What about the other Morgans who are in law enforcement? Deke was working the case. These characters were way more isolated than they needed to be. There should have been more character interaction. The siblings should've really gotten to know Leah, giving her a sense of family and safety.
Then, after the reveal Leah was cut on her neck, then two pages later, the cut is on her cheek. Plus, she was tied up/cuffed (I can't recall), so how was she able to just grab a vase??? A bit earlier in the story, she comes home, put on sweats, then turns around puts on pajamas. Makes no sense. I also don't get Leah and Alex having sex (poorly written, at that), with a bug in the house. They know the person after Leah is listening, and I just don't see Leah doing that. Them sleeping together at all felt like it was just thrown in there, b/c the story was ending.
The concept of the story was great, but the execution was not. It's like this book wasn't proofread. The story was mostly suspense and no romance with a bunch of careless mistakes. I feel it was misrepresented. Also, the Morgans, with the exception of Georgia, come off a little like jerks. Where's the heart? My intent with this wasn't to be negative. I just wanted to be honest and hope it's helpful.
This is the first book I've read by Mary Burton and I have the other books for the Morgans. I plan on reading those as well.
Deidre, Leah’s one close friend has been murdered and a detective agent, Alex Morgan from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is hot on the case. The fact that Deidre had been stabbed twenty-three times, the same as what had happened to Leah was just too coincidental leading to wonder whether or not Leah’s husband was really dead.
As usual Mary Burton who is a master of suspense and terror keeps that tradition going with I’LL NEVER LET YOU GO. Blending her masterful suspense with the Morgan’s of Nashville series also added in a lovely romantic bent as well. Because of previous books on the Morgans, one is able to understand what has shaped Alex into the brilliant detective he is. Just as Alex was fleshed out, Ms. Burton did a remarkable job of fleshing out Leah as well, making one understand her fears and a little bit of her OCD.
However, what Ms. Burton does best is change the rules and totally twist around everything one thinks is going on! I’LL NEVER LET YOU GO is one highly recommended read! Most importantly, be prepared to be surprised at the end.
