Well told story of friendship and life

This wasn't a book I really had high hopes for, but after reading the first few chapters I was engaged by the characters and hooked.

Although the book description on Amazon implies this is a story of random people fulfilling the dying wish of a friend to care for her teenage daughter, it's really the story of friendship. I came into this expecting to read about how they fulfill their commission, yet the book is more about how each person came to be part of the mother's life, and why she would want them to remain in her daughter's life.

The first few chapters do begin with the meeting of 4 people at a solicitor's office to hear the last request of their long-time friend to mentor her nearly-grown daughter, but after giving us an idea of the future, the book delves onto the past, helping us to know each character, and how their lives all intertwine.

The friendships begin during college in the 80's, and the story moves progressively forward, giving the reader a window into each person's life and personality. The book is fast-moving, yet flows smoothly and naturally. The book is told in 3rd person, and the author spends several chapters focusing on one character followed by several chapters focused on a different character, so we get a fuller picture of each personality. Except for the introduction, which starts in 2017, the story moves consecutively, from 1985 forward, making it easy to follow.

A few swear words here and there, some characters sleep with each other, but nothing graphic.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book, well told and engaging, one which has more depth then the description would imply. I rarely rate books 5 stars, but I would give this a solid 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

This story is about 4 friends who meet in college and continue their friendship for many years after, even though they are very different. In reality, it’s mostly about 3 women - Angie, Maggie, and Angie’s daughter, Romany. The POV alternates between these 3 individuals, although it is mostly told from Angie’s point of view and mostly about her. Angie is somewhat of a mess because of her childhood, but she seems to have a wisdom or intuition that guides her. For the most part it works but, sometimes, it just doesn’t. Sometimes, there’s too strict a demarcation between the artsy Angie and the business minded Maggie.

Without giving any spoilers, I will say it seems that the author lacks a little understanding about how the world of business works and how the world of music works. Some things that happen just don’t fit. She could have also done a bit of research about postpartum depression.

The repeated statement that Leon was wasting his life because he had musical talent and was a chemical engineer is just pure romanticism and bugged the crap out of me. I realize the author is trying to say you should do what you love, but that doesn’t mean you have to make your living doing that thing. It also doesn’t mean you could make a living doing that thing. There’s nothing wrong with having a hobby that you love and a job that you work. Oftentimes, turning your love into a job makes it, well, a job instead of a love.

Overall, I’d recommend the book. But, I do wish the author had done a little more research to make her story lines work a little better. 3.5 stars.

When I first started reading this book, I wasn't sure how much I was going to like it. It seemed like a weird concept. A lady (Angie) dies and leaves the responsibility of taking care of her daughter, Romany, in Romany's final year before university to Angie's three closest friends, who she's known for 30 years, and a lady that Angie met only a few years ago.

This book could be separated into three parts. First, you have the letter that Angie left behind detailing each person's responsibility in carrying for Romany. Along with this comes the reactions of the people to learning their roles for the next year in Romany's life.

The second part is basically the development of the friendships of Angie and her three friends Maggie, Tiger, and Leon. This starts out when they meet in university and goes until Angie's death over 30 years later. I love that these are friendships that have lasted for so long. Yet, the book also shows how the level of closeness that they each feel toward each other varies throughout that time. It felt true to any friendship that's going to last that long.

The final quarter of the book was about how Angie's friends discovered their roles in Romany's life. More than that, though, it's about how even after someone dies, that person can continue to influence the lives of their family and friends. I wasn't sure if this book could have a fully satisfactory ending, but the ending was good enough that a book that I was considering giving 4 stars was boosted up to 5 stars in the end.

This book has some swearing. I'd say that it probably averages one or two swear words a chapter. Some chapters have none, and there are others that have several. As far as I remember, there are no uses of the f-bomb. While the characters talk about having sex, there's no graphic description or anything that I felt like I needed to skip over. There is one reference to a character bringing a not-so-legal substance through customs. As long as someone isn't offended by the swearing, I feel like this is a book that I would feel fairly comfortable recommending to most people.

This is Imogen Clark's best book yet, Impossible to Forget is exactly what this story is and the main character Angie fits that bill from the very start. I was totally drawn in by the opening scenes and wanted to know why Angie had chosen these particular people to look after her daughter Romany. Every character in the book is so well drawn and unique and they pull on your emotions easily. Their interactions are a joy and allows the reader to visualise, sympathise, walk alongside and laugh and cry with them.

Imogen Clark is a wonderful author. I have read all her books and had this one on pre order. It certainly lives up to her others, a truly emotional and entertaining read. The book features Romany, an 18 year old who has just lost her mother, Angie. In her will, Angie has appointed four guardians for Romany. Three are old friends from university and one is a much younger, newer friend. Some of the book goes back to when they all met, and the rest centres on how they support Romany in the year after Angie dies. In the process, they also learn a lot about themselves. It is a really well written story, which never becomes over sentimental. Highly recommended.

I think this might be my new favourite of Imogen’s books. The story of 4 friends and their lives together, Impossible to forget, navigates 30+ years of friendship and the impact one person has on all their lives. Not maudlin but deeply, deeply emotionally impactful, this is a joy of a story. I didn’t want it to end. No, really, if I had one criticism it would be that I have a few questions that I would have liked answering - like how did the gig go, has there been a house move, who got a new job…

But that’s just a very small criticism!

A fantastic book

I have had the honour of reading both an ARC and listening to an audio version of this book and it’s been fantastic. I’d say that it’s definitely my second favourite so far this year and that is only because of some very tough competition.

When I first began reading it, we hear of Ange’s death and the guardianship of Romany her daughter. Then the book transports us back to when Ange met them way back in uni. I was quite confused about why her death was at the beginning of the book, and there’s no real mention of it again until maybe the last quarter of the book. That said whilst I don’t necessarily feel it adds anything at the beginning it doesn’t detract from it either.

My one small and it is really small criticism was that I would have liked more surrounding Ange’s death and illness. It is kind of glossed over in the book. One minute she is there and the next gone. Whilst I know a death is a rather macabre topic, I do think it would have added even more depth to the story and created an even deeper emotional connection with the characters. That said it hasn’t detracted so much for me to drop it down to four stars so it’s still pretty good.

The funniest part for me…..Tiger’s real name!!!

Honestly read this book, it’s brilliant!
