In Deep Voodoo is the story of recent divorcee Penny Francisco. She's fighting the town of Mojo's city hall (her ex-mother-in-law), her ex's new girlfriend is painting the Victorian Penny lovingly restored Pepto-Bismal pink, and she's got some pretty deep, dark secrets herself. When her friend Marie throws Penny a party to celebrate her new singlehood, it seems like a terrific idea, especially when she meets hunky BJ at the local drinking hole. A little rebound fling never hurt anybody, right?
But Penny's party is in the middle of Mojo's annual voodoo festival. And among the anonymous gifts is a voodoo doll of her ex. Cheered on by her friends, Penny stabs the doll. Unfortunately, someone thinks it's a good idea to do the same to her jerk of an ex-husband.
Fair warning: this is a cross-genre novel, comedy-romance-mystery which is what Ms. Bond is known for. If you can't handle crossing the streams, this isn't for you. This book was also meant to be the first of a series with an ongoing plot, so many of the mystery elements aren't wrapped up in this volume. However, the romance is.
Penny is the type of woman I can't help but like. She's made her mistakes, she's survived an ugly past, and she's tried to grow from them. This story is about her reaching her turning point in life--cutting the crap and taking chances. This is undoubtedly her journey, and because it is, we don't know as much about BJ and what really motivates him. I think that's my one and only gripe about this book. I'd like to know him a little better, even if he is my hero as the killer of snakes!
Now that Ms. Bond has her rights, I hope she continues this series. It was never meant to stop at two!
The ending came as a surprise, which is what saved the book, but it was all tied up so quickly compared to the rest of the book. One of the few books I've read in the romance genre where I wished the book would have been shorter; I usually wish for more. I know there are other books in this series, but pretty sure I won't be buying those. Sorry, Ms Bond, I wanted to like it and all I can say is...meh.
I enjoyed all of the characters in this book. Penny is the main character and while she helps solve the mystery, she is not portrayed as a "true amateur sleuth" in this book. She kind of takes side notes with B.J. the PI who is visiting town working on missing persons cases. Penny has a few secrets herself.
Penny owns a health food store and has some great friends that work for her. Marie and Guy are the main workers. Guy is gay, or at least he hasn't learned that yet, and Marie has fun trying to liven up Penny's life. Several town people visit the store, some on a daily basis, others more frequent, who add spice to the mystery and fun.
My favorite thing about this book was that it wasn't your typical cozy mystery or romance. It had mystery. It had the ingredients of a cozy mystery. It had the romance, and at times was quite steamy. However, the author has done an amazing job of blending these things together in a very different way than "usual"

Penny is a little uptight and certainly eats some odd stuff all in the healthy living cause and she'd probably get on my nerves if I met her but you had to feel bad at the mess she finds herself in.
There were a few niggly little mistakes like misplaced or missed apostrophes then forgotten capital letters. The the surname was suddenly Under as opposed to Linder which has clearly been copied across wrong at some point.
I'll certainly be sticking with this author, though. I was intrigued by Penny's lawyer and I see the sequel to this book features more about her background so it's on my wishlist.
