What's worse than being hunted by a devil? Discovering you've been mated to one.
Since moving to Mystic Harbor, Maine, I've made it my life's mission to avoid Reese Blackburn at all costs. Sure, he has cheekbones that could cut glass, not to mention bedroom eyes that could melt any girl into a puddle on the floor. Too bad that doesn't change the fact he's completely stab-worthy. When a fun night out on the town turns deadly, I quickly discover the quaint little hamlet of Mystic Harbor houses more than sandy beaches and adorable B&Bs. Beneath the New England charm rests a deadly world where shifters, demons, vampires, and angelic hunters all vie for power.
A world where magic is the greatest weapon. Magic that people are willing to kill for. Magic that I now possess.
After that one fateful night, I can feel the changes beginning to take hold of me. Worse yet, I have no idea what I'm even turning into! All I know is someone wants me dead, and someone even worse wants me alive. Hell's mystifying Crown Prince of Lust has just marked me to be his mate, and this handsome devil won't stop until he claims what is his. My only real ally rests in the one person I can't stand: the insufferably gorgeous Reese Blackburn.
I was just your average 17-year-old girl. Now, my very soul is at stake. Can my unlikely partnership challenge fate itself before it's too late, or will I be forever damned as a Princess of Hell?
Dark. Romantic. Dangerous. And sexy as hell. Perfect for fans of The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, and all things Supernatural. If you love paranormal romances, urban fantasy, fated mates, magic, vampires, shifters, demons, teen fantasy, mythology, tragic romances, Gothic themes, supernatural creatures, young adult dark fantasy, and some devilish bad boys, then the world of The Marked Mage Chronicles awaits you!

Cons--The beginning is hard to get into. The prologue scene is straight out of a movie--or so close to it I recalled the movie I had only seen once years ago--which is plagiarism. It would've been much more effective to merely have Kat watch a news report on it, since it is sort of important later. Also, there was a weird issue with word choices. People were described more by weird labels than their names as if trying to force a variation of word choices rather than depending on pronouns like "he" or a name. Last, there's a huge amount of references in this book to pop-culture things like TV, movies, etc. but the majority are from the 90's which probably goes over teens head (some I had no clue about myself either). I had to double check that the book was written recently and not back then. Just kind of awkward at times with these references and word choices.
Pros--I loved the characters. Kat had to grow on me but immediately I loved Reese and the sub characters. The mythology business with magicians, powers, demons, and reapers were the making of the book. I absolutely loved this supernatural world amidst our real one, and although I heard of the creatures mentioned before, this was done in a unique way. The mythology dealing with Hell and sinning was kind of a cool twist too. I also loved the attention to detail throughout the book in places and the pick up in pacing at the action scenes where readers want to know what happens quickly. The ending throws in lots of surprises, a couple holy crap moments, and it was refreshingly unpredictable. The plot, characters, and fantasy elements were the best parts of the book.
Overall, it was an excellent read but it needed some tweaking when it came down to the writing and the beginning of the book. I will give it 4/5 stars because I did enjoy it and it was difficult to put down; however, I don't think I'll read the second because I just didn't fall in love with it to care enough, and from the description of the next book it seems to start a love triangle with a character I cannot possibly be on board with. However, I do recommend the first book and would love to have someone change my mind and give me reasons to read the second.
The only peculiarities I noticed were "The Marked Mage" is very similar to "The Marked" in title. The book titles are similarly one worded adjectives, they're both dark paranormal romances, both seem headed towards a love triangle, both have similar cover art and suspiciously both use a handful of the same character names ie Gemma, Blackburn, Trace, and Gabriel! (So far) Were the authors collaborating and split for creative differences? Is one author a fan of the other or competing with the other? I don't know but that's a lot of coincidences. The only complaint i have at all is both series could use a better proof reader as i found lots of typos and misspellings in both. I wrote this review on my kindle so it's not the best in grammar but I'd love to offer my proof reading services. All in all I'm very excited to trear through this series!
I wanted to like this story, and the premise was a little different, but there were some elements in the world building that were confusing. The explanation of the different beings - Hellhounds, Reapers, Mages - got a little confusing. Reese’s place is never fully explained, but perhaps that’s a detail being saved for a subsequent book. There were several secondary characters, and it honestly got hard to keep track of them. On top of that, sometimes Kat refers to them by their first names, and then in the next paragraph she switches to their last name. There were other inconsistencies too. Kat’s family supposedly came from very modest means before her father got a big promotion, but then she tells of how snobby her grandparents had been when her uncle wanted to marry someone they thought was beneath him. It’s not an important detail to the story, but it was just an inconsistency that took me out of things for a moment. Often the dialogue didn’t seem like the way teenagers would talk - too many euphemisms and metaphors that even adults would use sparingly. There were also some pop culture references and phrases that were a little too specific, dating the story, not to mention some words used incorrectly.
In all, it was a story with potential. I can’t say that I can’t wait to read the rest of the series, because I’m not sure I love the direction the plot line seems to be going (not a fan of love triangles), but I am curious about where things will go.
