I wasn't sure how this author would do, going from epic fantasy to space opera, but after reading this first book, I am impressed with his ability to create an adventure with memorable characters and many suspenseful twists and turns that kept me drawn in. He also has the perfect balance of giving enough details to bring the story to life without leaving me drowning in excessive details and slow plot progression. The loss of humanity is on a scale I've never seen in other books, making the stakes even higher.

If you enjoyed Mr Quaintrell's early works, but are hesitant to make the jump from epic fantasy to space opera, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Being a Irobot and Enders game reader I was not too sure about this book so I only bought the first in the series, however that's about to change.

This book has strong character both good and bad Roland being my favorite space maverick. I like the way the characters and there origins were woven into the storyline. I don't remember any parts that were slow or boring; my overhaul impression was one of wanting to read more. Well worth a read for sci-fi fans.

Thoroughly enjoyable read, and an instance where the book cost is not enough. I feel like I've got a BOGOF, now that I've just purchased book 2. Read and enjoy.

A Truly Unique Space Opera

As a proofreader, I was immediately struck by how well written this book was as the first book by an author. It's by no means perfect, but then, I can't remember the last book I read that was (and that includes authors such as Alastair Reynolds). Not only has this guy has a real talent for storytelling, but he has a good mastery of the English language. I have no doubt he will soon be hitting the bestseller lists.

I'll try not to give any spoilers, but the initial few chapters had me hooked as to how the story was going to pan out. Talk about setting up obstacles for your hero to overcome, this was in its own league.

The technical details have obviously been well researched in that they may be sci-fi, but they are believable and not overly heavy. The characters are fully developed, and you care about all of them, even the ones you don't particularly like.

The bottom line is that if you enjoy space operas, then you will enjoy this series.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the fascinating and complex plot. There are incredibly dramatic events and the alien species are very interesting and well depicted. The variety of their attitudes and relationships with humanity are also good.

This is a really good book. The only things that keep it from being a great book are not terribly serious but did get in the way of my full enjoyment.
1. Better editing is needed. There are issues with usage and punctuation that are annoying to a nerd like me.
2. Some of the fight scenes are just too long and detailed and drawn out. Again this may be just my personal taste.
3. The villains, especially the main villain, are full and fascinatingly written. But the heroes are a bit two dimensional. And it did bother me that they didn't react more strongly to the early events of the book. I don't want to give away anything but if ever there was traumatic stress, it's in this book but the characters barely respond.

Nevertheless this is still a very strong and enjoyable science fiction adventure.

This is an exceptional first novel from a very talented author, made even more enjoyable by the fact that it perfectly fills a niche in the sci-fi novel market which so badly needed filling. You've got your serious science stuff à la Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space, you've got your light-hearted fun à la Dennis E Taylor's Bobiverse... now we have Philip C Quaintrell pitching a perfect balance between the two. There is enough 'science' (I mean the still-fictional-but-definitely-believable kind) here to prove this guy really knows his stuff and has clearly researched the technical side of things including important aspects of astrophysics, chemistry, and biology; there's just the right amount of peril and edge-of-your-seat situations to keep you wanting to read more; there are fantastic well-rounded characters who are both relatable and loveable; there are moments of levity and humour, both subtle and blatant; and the story... well let me just say the history and depth of it all is outstanding. The balance of all these elements together with a fantastic pace which ebbs and flows evenly according to what the reader needs next, makes this book an utterly outstanding addition to high ranking sci-fi novels. If it hasn't been picked up for an Arthur C Clarke award yet, I can only imagine that in time they're going to kick themselves for not recognising the potential talent here when it was in its infancy. There are so many places to go with this universe that Quaintrell has evoked, and I'm excited to visit them all.
