Editorial Reviews

Review

“A bowling tournament gives the rolling raconteur introduced in the 2003 picture book Arnie the Doughnut fresh scope for wisecracks and wild misadventures. . . . Like triumphant Mr. Bing, Keller walks off with a ‘Stiffy Stu McShiny' award for this yummy chapter-book series opener.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review on Bowling Alley Bandit

“Keller shrewdly targets hesitant readers with an abundance of goofy comedy.” ―
Publishers Weekly, starred review on Bowling Alley Bandit

About the Author

Laurie Keller is the bestselling author-illustrator of many books for kids, including Do Unto Otters; Potato Pants!; The Scrambled States of America; the Geisel Award-winning We Are Growing!; and Arnie the Doughnut, as well as three books in the Adventures of Arnie the Doughnut chapter book series.

Growing up in Michigan, Laurie always loved to draw, paint and write stories. She earned a B.F.A. at Kendall College of Art and Design, then worked at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City as a greeting card illustrator for seven years. One night, the idea for a children’s book popped into her head and after showing the story to several publishers in New York City, she quit her job and moved there. The following year, that story idea was a published book―
The Scrambled States of America. Laurie loved living in NYC, but she returned to her home state, where she lives in the woods along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Always the perfect gift

5.0 out of 5 stars Goofiness & silliness in black and white
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on March 5, 2021
I was slightly disappointed when we received this 126 page The Adventures of Arnie the Doughnut book. Unlike the colourful main story book that tells how Arnie ends up wit mr. Bing, this lacks colour and is printed on cheap paper. Moreover the pages are filled with different font types and cartoon-style text boxes, which makes it harder to pin down the narrative. So its is less suitable for joint reading sessions and more to be enjoyed by the young reader on his/her own. Our 7-year old doesn’t mind. Arnie the Doughnut is his favourite book character and he knows the main story book by heart. He has also developed an appetite for doughnuts. So this book was much appreciated by him and is a nice extension to the Arnie lore. So we have now also ordered the other 2 books in this series. mostly because, our son reads reasonably well, but he was not a big fan until he got his hands on the Arnie the Doughnut book, that he reads over and over again aloud.
