ReviewThis is the second book in the Slipstreamer series, and I should note, for transparency sake, that I will have a novella published under this series in 2021.
Ali House, in The Island Artifact, brings us to the island of Newfoundland where the Norse and the Beothuk lived in harmony, and the Norse never abandoned L'Anse aux Meadows. Cassidy Crane happens to come to the island during a large celebration day, celebrating the Norse arriving. While the first Slipstreamers book focused much more on Dr. Gamgee, his recruitment of Cassidy, and her first experience with the portals to other worlds, this one focuses much more on the character, her sense of adventure, and her sense of responsibility.
This is a fun story, made even more fun because Cassidy doesn't have a goal or plan, she is simply exploring a new world and all it has to offer, and taking part in the celebrations of the day. It would have been neat to further explore the relationship and community developed between the Beothuk and the Norse, but maybe that will come in a future Slipstreamer novella!
I will be honest, I am an archaeologist, and had a little trouble with how Cassidy felt she had a responsibility to study an artifact and broke into a museum to do so (only to be informed that she could have just applied for a permit), but I also accept that that is how archaeologists are often portrayed, so that is a me issue, not an issue with the storytelling. I have a funny feeling I may think this way about more than a few of the Slipstreamer books as Cassidy is an Indiana Jones style antiquarian!
