If authors get paid by the word Mr. Bates must be rolling in dough.
The basic story was pretty good. A group of young people off to explore a haunted island. Of course the men start snapping at each other in an attempt to impress. A murder/murders occur but our group do not hesitate to explore the area, in the dark of course.
It would have made a decent story if the kernel of the story remained intact. The sexual situations were not necessary and the fact that, at least four of our protagonists, at various times, storm out of the buildings into the dark and rainy night.Despite being aware of a murder and a ghost wandering around.
In real life all of these people would be dead.
I gave it three stars because the writing was OK and the characters were well defined. But, I can only recommend it if you like to scan pages.

If you enjoy horror stories involving creepy places then you'll enjoy this tale and all the other stories written by Jeremy Bates. I am a fan of Bates, and all the books I've read by this author pull the reader into the suspense, drench you into the scene, and keep your heart pumping while emerging into the action that lurks around the next corner. In this story the protagonist is very human, vulnerable and in the end gains something. There is also another story thread that relates to the present story and the switching back and forth was smooth and placed in the appropriate moments on the timeline.
The setting is the Island, a horrific place where childhood tragedy is glorified, as if that could ever help, and invokes the slanted surreal feeling to everything that happens at that place. The details are creepy. The pace of the action is intense (some fights, some sex) but the characters unfold slowly, peeling away layers of themselves the more you read on, until the deeper troubles and reality surfaces, and the reader will say, "yes, that makes sense". Something different in this story from other books written by Bates is the happy ending. But after the whirlwind of horrific cruelty that some of the characters had to endure, I think it is wise to give the guy a break.
I recommend all the Jeremy Bates books, especially this one. But be forewarned - you'll never look at a doll in the same way again.

I was drawn to this book for the premise of the story. An island of dolls. That is very creepy. I know that I would not want to spend a day or even a night on an island like this.
The story starts out good. It definitely grabbed my attention. Instantly, I imagined myself on the island with Jack and his friends. Jack is kind of the main voice for the six friends. The story alternates between him and Maria. Maria's story is the past.
She was obsessed with her doll. Her mother could not get it away from her. I preferred Maria's story than really the present. Partly due to the fact that none of the others were that endearing. I did not care if something happened to them.
Honestly, I figured this whole story out very early on. There were no great surprises and the "scary" factor was low. The whole concept of the dolls does get a higher rating for creepy. Overall, I was a bit disappointed in this book but I would try another one by this author.

This is the 9th book I’ve read by Jeremy Bates and have just started Suicide Forest. I am a fan of his style of writing and have never been bored while reading one of his books. He does a terrific job of fleshing out the characters and describing the situations they become involved in. Some reviewers didn’t care for the fact that the story jumped from the 1950’s to the current time. I thought it was handled very adeptly and the transitions were smooth. A very sad part of the book was the story of poor, sweet, little Maria. My heart just broke when reading what happened to her.
Spoil Alert
I am not a fan of the Stephen King style of “supernatural” novels. Mr. Bates’ novels often have an element of the supernatural; however, by the end what seemed unreal or supernatural to the characters ends up being explained very realistically. These twists are what make his novels so interesting to me.

Almost as good as "Suicide Forest"
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 23, 2018Verified Purchase
Well written, nicely paced and un-putdownable, all the usual features of a Jeremy Bates novel. The 'World's Scariest Places ' series is such a great idea, and "Island of the Dolls"is one of the scariest so far. It reminds me most of" Suicide Forest" which is not a bad thing at all, as it's my favorite of the series to date.
In common with "Suicide Forest" " Island of the Dolls " has a fast paced narrative, attractive, likeable characters and a creepy, atmospheric setting, which Jeremy Bates ' clear, sharp prose brings to life very effectively. The youthful cast of characters share a similar mixture of friendships and emnities, and a first person narrator in the form of - in "Suicide Forest" - an American ex-pat teaching English to Japanese businessmen, and a binge drinking American race car driver in Mexico drinking himself to oblivion in "...Dolls".
Another feature both share seems to be a favourite device of Bates', insofar as the supernatural scares turn out to be less occult and more a very human tragedy...
But I won't spoil the fun ! While "Island of the Dolls" isn't quite worthy of the 4 and 5*s for "Catacombs" and "Suicide Forest" it is vintage Jeremy Bates, and definitely worth checking out. I can't wait to see which Scariest Place he'll get to next ! Any suggestions ? I'd try the floodplanes of the Danube, Algernon Blackwood's setting for "The Willows" or maybe Bodmin Moor...

Not what I expected
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 14, 2016Verified Purchase
After reading Suicide Forest, I was really looking forward to this book being set on the Island of the Dolls. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations.
I found the characters difficult to connect to with, the hero constantly reliving a difficult past with typical hero flaws. Some characters (Pepper and Lucinda) had great potential but were majorly underdeveloped and didn't serve any real purpose or add to the story.
While Maria's story was a sad one, this again could have been used so much more. I was hoping for a much spookier feel considering the setting, potentially with a more supernatural feel.
If you're looking for a supernatural horror, I don't think you'll find it here. An ok read but not the best. Sorry!

Not bad but not what I expected
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 15, 2018Verified Purchase
The book is pleasant to read and the story is quite gripping, however the first part is much better than the second.
I expected it to be much more about the actual island and the dolls, I was expecting a Stephen-King-type of story, but - although it seems to go this way at the start - then it takes another direction.
Some characters are annoying (can’t stand the Russian girl), and the end is a bit disappointing.
Worth reading for the first half.

I enjoyed this book for the most part, it kept me turning the pages, but nothing really stayed with me once I'd finished it. Oh apart from that there were a few parts where the female grabbed each other breasts when they fought. Make of that what you will...
