Only that never happens. Just after seeing her off at the airport Enrico gets one of those dreaded telephone calls regarding family one never wants to get. There has been a serious accident and his world flips from the outcome. Not only is he dealing with the results of the accident but he is also dealt a shocking blow when this leads to family secrets coming to light and putting him in a place of being forced to make a commitment to something he does not want nor believes in. He is overwhelmed, angry, absolutely betrayed and resentful of his situation. To say this changes him is an understatement.
For Olivia, not hearing from Enrico or ever having him answer her messages while she's on the coast stings and leads her to believe he was just a player and she swears to write him off. And when she arrives back in Rome for her flight home, their original plans are dust in the wind.
Cut to almost two years later, and Olivia is still designing pyjamas for a store chain but has put in serious time, resources and resumes to try to get with a good fashion house. She applies to the New York branch of Valentino but ends up being given a job in the Milan branch instead, hmm wonder how that happened. And surprise, surprise, she runs into Enrico again. But this time he's not the free spirited soft guy she met. He's hard and unyielding and seemingly way out of line with how possessive he is of her and how jealous. This guy hasn't seen her in almost 2 years after seemingly blowing her off and that's how he's going to act? Olivia wants no part of it even though she never forgot him, try what she may.
Of course, she eventually caves. The fact is while she's thought of him for all this time, he's also constantly thought of her too. And once again, they slowly find their way back together. Enrico is madly sexy although he vacillates between the hard businessman and the completely sentimental guy. He's still dominant and now very bossy but it's clear he never got over Olivia. However, the secrets he discovered on the day of the accident and the position is has now put him in lead him to a constant balancing act of wanting Olivia forever and wrestling with going against tradition by doing so. On top of that, there is the constant danger and threat that comes around now leading the family business and trying to conceal the less appealing facets of that from Olivia. First to keep her safe and secondly because he dearly doesn't want to lose her.
For Olivia's part, she was a great match for Enrico. Far from home and country, she was willing to give up everything and learn the Italian way to compromise and make a life together. These two have some massive blowouts with each other and a tad of OW almost drama but they're obviously fated to be and getting there is the fun part of the journey.
There were several times I wanted to punch Enrico in the face but then he'd turn around and do something so nice or show such sentimentality that he'd be back in my good graces. All in all, a swoon worthy guy with a woman that wises up fast and learns how to help support him in finding his way. A really entertaining read!
Olivia Reynolds is in week two of her five-week Italian vacation. She now is in Rome. The weather was warm. The scenery was breathtaking. Rome is everything she had ever dreamed it would be. She didn't know that her dream vacation was going to get a whole lot better.
“I look up to the bar and stare straight into the eyes of a man. He's huge, towering above the others around him. His black hair has a little length to it, with a curl. His eyes are dark, and are unmistakably locked on me. He doesn't look away. Instead, he dips his head and gives me a slow, sexy smile.”
His name is Enrico Ferrara. He was all Italian, tall, dark and handsome. She was from Sydney, Australia, fair skinned, blonde & blue eyed. Opposites with an instant sexual attraction to each other. She was twenty-seven and he was thirty-two. He helped her with the menu and they ate dinner. They danced, kissed and kissed. He was a wonderful tour-guide all over Rome. They had a storybook romance. And by the time they parted, she was hopelessly in love. He dropped her at the airport, after a very romantic and sorrowful parting. Promises & reunion plans were made. She never thought she would not even get a phone call. She had no way of knowing that the same day that they parted, was the same day his entire life would be changed. That he was so full of grief and sorrow. That his world now would be difficult forever. He was turned that day into an entirely different man. Two years would pass when their eyes would meet across a room again.
This is quite a story with lots of angst and heartache. Enrico and Olivia have very difficult road to travel if they dare to hope for a future. His life seems to be sacrificed to his ancestors. Their sexual attraction, want and need for each other is hot. It seems to ignite the pages. They need to love each other more than all the people who hate the idea of them being together. Lots of surprises before the end. You can take the man out of Italy. You can't take the Italy out of the man. Highly Recommend!!
I highly recommend The Italian!

Loved this read, which gives you everything from romance-comfort-zone to unexpected twists and turns.
Half-way through the book, the story seems over with no HEA in sight.
It then whizzes through many twists and turns - some of which you can see coming, others not at all.
It's an enjoyable rollercoaster ride.
I am in two minds about the main characters, because while their sexual chemistry is great, he is a hypocritical douche sometimes and she a pushover sometimes. Something doesn't quite gel. There is too much discrepancy in each character, and I get the impression character-traits are pulled out by the author as seen fitting to make the respective scene work.
Having said that: this book presents an enjoyable read with hot sex scenes and an entertaining enough plot to keep you reading.

The love story is what we can only dream of experiencing and the one liners that T produce are hilarious!
Fantastic storyline, no cliffhanger definitely a book you can enjoy time and time again like TL Swan’s back catalogue.
It’s definitely recommended . Enjoy...

Olivia. As the book progresses, and the death of Enrico’s father and Grandfather suspiciously. You realise the wealth may not be from entirely legal money. Olivia is blind to this fact and following a two year separation, she finds herself employed back in her dream job in Italy. Not realising a strong influence was involved. The story has multi twists turns, plots and sub plots but not that many you are confused whilst your reading . It is fast furious but also tender and delightfully romantic. We are left in suspense at the end but also happy. A great story and looking forward to a great sequel.
