About James Ernest Shaw
James Ernest Shaw lives and writes from small-town America, in the heart of what John Steinbeck called "the prettiest state I ever saw." He and his wife Mardi divide their time between their five children and their eight grandchildren. James is a former filmmaker and for six years wrote a newspaper column, "Another View of Life." His first book, "An Italian Journey," chronicles the adventures and the people that James met during an extended sojourn in Tuscany picking olives and eating with Italians at their kitchen tables. He was searching for the essence of Italy - what makes Italians so uniquely hospitable. "A Harvest of Revelations in the Olive Groves of Tuscany" is the story of the Italians who shared their lives with him.
His second book, AN AMERICAN JOURNEY: TRAVELS WITH FRIDAY IN SEARCH OF AMERICA AND AMERICANS, is a comparison of America 1962 and America 2012 told through the stories of the people James met on two bike rides across the heartland taken fifty years apart. The first bike trip was inspired by John Steinbeck's TRAVELS WITH FRIDAY, and the second bike trip was, like Steinbeck's journey, taken during the height of a campaign for President. And in each book, the unique story of America is told through the people that Steinbeck and Shaw met on the roads of America.
James is a product of small-town America (Hayes Center, Nebraska population 248). He graduated from the University of Nebraska. After a short stint as a ski bum in Breckenridge, Colorado, he served in the US Army as a cinematographer. He spent his professional career as a cinematographer and filmmaker, working from his home base in Aspen, Colorado and Wisconsin. He produced adventure films throughout the world for Discovery, The Learning Channel, Public Television and his own productions. James is also a pilot with over two thousand hours, and in his never-ending quest for adventure even served a short stint as a bush pilot in Alaska.
He still enjoys flying but has found his true love is more down to earth. He was raised as the son of a wheat farmer and is happy to once again be back on the land enjoying life in a small town.

It’s April in Italy and the Journey of a lifetime has just begun.
After two weeks at sea the Oosterdam docked in Civitavecchia, Italy. Among the shipboard romantics was a not-so-young couple on their much-delayed honeymoon. Approaching their forty-sixth wedding anniversary, they had their hearts set on an Italian adventure they would have loved to have taken earlier in their marriage but matters of making a living, making a life, and raising children kept them from getting away together.
The surprises began before they got out of the harbor.
Their Two for the Road adventure began as inauspiciously as Joanna and Mark’s in that insightful 1967 film about marriage—walking along the side of a highway trailing suitcases wishing that someone would come along and save them from themselves. Mardi and James survived that misadventure thanks to the kindness of an Italian bus driver who went out of his way to deliver them to where they needed to go. It was but the first of many times in their journey that the kindness of strangers and the ever-present Italian penchant for hospitality overwhelmed them.
They called their wanderings Pinball Traveling—Letting the beauty and people of Italy guide their journey. They traveled with no firm itinerary. If they saw something they liked, they had the freedom to explore it. If someone extended a hand of friendship, they had the opportunity to accept it. Mysteries abound in this life—and their sojourn in southern Italy and the warm-hearted Italians they met gave them eyes to take a fresh look at their high-spirited marriage.
An Italian Love Story will inspire you to take your own journey of a lifetime—which may, as it did for Mardi and James, bring you face-to-face with not only the incredible warmth of the Italian people and the intoxicating beauty of Italy, but also to the perplexing mysteries of your own life.

AN ADVENTURE OF THE HEART in the mold of literature's classic spiritual journeys.
IT BEGAN WITH A GIRL. Then it was Italian food. After that it was books and discovering that even Mark Twain had fallen for Italy.
E.M. Forster was smitten too: “Love and understand the Italians,
for the people are more marvelous than the land.”
WHAT IS IT ABOUT ITALY AND ITALIANS?
Italian movies immortalize the mystique. Fellini called it "La Dolce Vita."
Tornatore's "Cinema Paradiso" took James Shaw back to the sweet memories of his childhood and the Italian family who operated the hometown theater. And just like in the movie, young James had an “Alfredo” who, by example, taught him about serving people.
James learned that Italians don't feel they're special. Luigi Barzini, author of
"The Italians," repeatedly asked, “Why are we the way we are?”—and found no
conclusive answer.
But James was convinced there was a reason why the Renaissance was born in Tuscany–and Italy has given the world Saint Francis, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Galileo and now Benigni, whose film "Life Is Beautiful" shows us that the Italian zest for living can even make a heaven of a hell.

AN AMERICAN JOURNEY IS A CAPTIVATING TALE OF AMERICA AND AMERICANS.
In the summer of 1962 James Shaw strapped an army surplus sleeping bag on his 3-speed bike and set off from his small-town Nebraska home for the Rocky Mountains. He was fifteen years old and had just read John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley. Just like Steinbeck, James learned that America is filled with good-hearted characters, like the tobacco-chewing, foul-mouthed pool shark who, upon learning that James was looking for a place to camp, directed the wandering wayfarer to a pastor who let him sleep on his porch.
TOO OLD AT SIXTY-FIVE?
Fifty years later, James had a few questions: How much has America changed since the days of John F. Kennedy? Are Americans still kind to strangers? And could he, at age sixty-five, bike the thousand-plus miles that lie between Wisconsin and Colorado? On this journey James took along a companion—a weird-looking, small-wheeled bike named Friday. By piquing the curiosity of everyone who saw it, that strange little blue bike introduced James to a fascinating cross section of Americans. From these people James discovered what has changed about America and the many things that are still essentially the same in this great and still wide-open country.
AN UNFORGETTABLE CAST OF CHARACTERS.
You’ll meet the people James met—memorable one-of-a-kind, salt-of-the-earth folks. Some days he met so many intriguing people that he rode only a couple of dozen miles. Their stories will inspire you. They will also serve as warnings that this great experiment that is known as America must be safeguarded. Steinbeck warned us—and so do the fascinating people you will meet in An American Journey. Their stories will remind you of all that is good about America—and just how much we stand to lose if we are not vigilant in protecting our freedoms.
TRAVELS WITH FRIDAY WILL WARM YOUR HEART WITH APPRECIATION FOR THE UNIQUE SPIRIT OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
By the author of AN ITALIAN JOURNEY - "FIVE STARS - THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ! I love Mr. Shaw's way of telling a story. You feel as though you're right there with him. I have Italian roots and this book makes the stories of my ancestors come alive." ~ Janet M
A FUN AND UNIQUE BOOK - FIVE STARS "It's amazing what happens when you take the ear buds out and start conversations with strangers! I lived vicariously through the author's experiences of RELATING to America as he travelled through the heart of America! Not many books continue to entertain well after reading, but this one has! While I can't take time off work to ride a bike from town to town, I've had more fun following the author's lead and challenging myself to ENGAGE with the folks around me. The book has taught me to take advantage of my trips to the airport or to the local grocery store!
On top of that - the author's accounts of the people he's met really make you think about what makes our country work. It's refreshing to see our country without the lens of big media, and a bunch of agendas, but instead on a direct and personal basis. It feels like a direct tap into the truth behind America's strength, and what will make America great in the future. I guess it makes sense that the author's unique trip resulted in such a unique book! I highly recommend the book!" ~ Dottie S
"LOVED AN AMERICAN JOURNEY! FIVE STARS! Once again I was pulled in by Mr. Shaw' gracious writing style. I love the sense of community shared by the many interesting characters he encountered in small-town America. I share many common ideals with the author, but he, being a storyteller, is able to articulate the thoughts I wish I could so artfully express.
