✨most incredible film i've seen in years✨

Shout out to The New Chitlin Circuit podcast for reviewing this film. I cannot believe I haven't heard of this movie or director before now?!?!? The film is sweet and well-paced. I love that we get a black woman driven story where the main character is human. She's a messy, unhinged, but genuine girl. An awkward black girl who doesn't have it all together but she has potential. Each character is so funny and devious and interesting in their own way. The story was incredibly touching and the cinematography was wonderful, stylistically. I think about 15 mins in I realized it had a mildly theatrical Spike Lee / Wes Anderson tone to the dialogue and that really helped me to tune in. (Those are my personal fav directors!)

I connected to this film personally because I see myself in Jean a lot. Plus I have a gang of aunts. lol I'm so grateful to have watched this today! Really lifted my spirits. Kudos to everyone involved in the making.

I just have to echo the refrain...how did I miss this film? A deeply familiar tale of how families, black immigrant families, remake memories to fit the stories of who they are becoming. OMG, when the grandmother says at the funeral parlor "tell him he will have to come back some other time...." how is that not every WI mother, here in the US or back in the Caribbean, reminding you who run things? Such credible character development, tender without being saccharine, and funny without slipping into caricature (a note Ash hits perfectly every time). So grateful that I stumbled on this, it has the 1990s ethos of Love Jones and Soul Food wrapped into one lovely film. May it find a second life.

I'm happy this popped up as a recommendation after I watched Black Box with Mamoudou Athie. Everything he's in has been a delight to see. He was just as adorable and wonderful in this role. This whole cast gave life to some amazing material. The story went to some deep places and also had some funny spots. The relationships were relatable :) I love getting angry with fictional characters. Maureen really pissed me off with her interactions with Jean. But later in the plot there were some helpful revelations about her (Sheri really played the role well. Normally the bubbly one, she carried the pain of this character very well). It was fun to journey with Jean through her ups and downs. Love the final shot! She's a legend!!

This is an excellent film. Happy to see so many other positive reviews. Surprised to see one person say there wasn't any character development. That person must not understand nuance. We got to see Jean at her tipping point, which is a critical phase in development. What more could you want?! I get angry at critics too :) Which reminds me, there weren't any sterotypes here. Just real - and again relatable - characters. Looking forward to seeing more from Taylour Paige and Stella Meghie.

I can't believe I had never heard of this movie before yesterday, but I'm so glad I finally did. The whole cast was amazing & played their roles brilliantly! It's the perfect mix of comedy, culture & familial connection/dysfunction that I didn't know I needed in my life. An instant fave. 💯

I join those who said they had never heard of this movie. I'm also happy I gave the movie a chance. It is quite a gem. A movie about family secrets finally coming out and how those secrets affected different family members. There's laughter, drama and lots of food for thought.

Don't Miss This Movie!

This was a really engaging, very enjoyable movie. Its a blend of very comedic moments in a great story. The closest comparison is to My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Solidly acted, great dialogue, and well directed. Don't miss this one.
