About Jeanne G'Fellers
Born and raised in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, author and artist Jeanne G’Fellers' early memories include watching the original Star Trek series with their father and reading the books their librarian mother brought home. Jeanne’s writing influences include Anne McCaffrey, Ursula K. LeGuin, Octavia Butler, Isaac Asimov, and Frank Herbert. Jeanne lives in Northeast Tennessee with their spouse and five crazy felines. Their home is tucked against a small woodland where they regularly see deer, turkeys, raccoons, and experience the magic of the natural world.

Cleaning House (Appalachian Elementals Book 1)
Aug 1, 2018
$2.99
Centenary Rhodes is an old soul with a well-traveled name, but she doesn't know this yet.
Growing up in southern Appalachia wasn’t easy, so Cent left home as soon as she could, but the post-collegiate happiness she’d expected has never occurred. She can’t find a decent date, much less find that special someone and, after losing her job in a corporate downsize, she’s struggling to meet her most basic needs. Her car has been repossessed, her bills are piling up, and her questionable North Chicago neighborhood is dangerous to navigate.
Returning home to Hare Creek, Tennessee, never crosses Cent’s mind until her Great Aunt Tess contacts her with an offer she can’t refuse. The family’s southern Appalachian homestead must be sold, and Aunt Tess needs someone to clean it up. Cent will have access to Aunt Tess’ garden and truck and can live on the homestead rent-free for as long as it takes. A part-time job is waiting for her as well.
It’s a chance to solve some of Cent’s financial woes, but will her return be enough when evil sets its sights on Embreeville Mountain and the homestead?
Cleaning House is a carefully woven Appalachian tapestry of granny magic, haints, elementals, and the fantastic diversity of the human condition – served with a delicious side of fries and a generous quart of peach moonshine.
Contains LGBTQ+ characters across the spectrum and a nonbinary protagonist.

Thirteen tales plus one, an uprooting of tradition with another just for fun. A strong mix of history, tradition, speculation, and, perhaps, a wee bit of fear. The haints in these hills are listenin’, child, so come sit a spell. You’ll hear tales you ain’t before; dark yahoos, wishes gone wrong, veil walkers, and someone’s head might well roll. Ain’t nothin’ really, just a few new stories you can take back to the holler and share with you and yours. Maybe they’ll shiver. Maybe you will too. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll hug someone tight when things get scary enough.
This is an anthology of nontraditional Appalachian ghost tales (not horror stories). It's not that we don't like the classics. Rather, we're ready for something new.
A note about the caution words (CW) and keywords (KW) at the beginning of each story: The caution words are in place because all readers have different experiences and some might be emotionally triggered by situations that might not trigger others. They are included out of respect for our readers. The keywords are a search mechanism. If you wish to read a story on family within the anthology, such stories are easy to locate, so are ones on dogs, spirits, etc. It's as simple as that.
Stories by order of appearance:
Part One: Short doesn’t mean necessarily sweet.
"Messages" by Deborah Marshall
"Miss Vera" by Brenda M. G’Fellers
"Can Johnny Come Home with Us?" by Rebecca Lynn
"Strays" by Brenda M. G’Fellers
"A Visit from a Peculiar Entity" by Jeanne G’Fellers
Part Two: Here’s to sad songs, rabid beasts, and things best left unseen.
"Singin’ Sally" by Sarah Elizabeth
"Survival" by Brenda M. G’Fellers
"Born with a Veil" by Jules Corriere
"The Neighbors are Fantastic" by Jeanne G’Fellers
"Pieces and Parts" by Anne G’Fellers-Mason
"As Light Fades" by Kristin Pearson
Part Three: Pull up a chair… if you ain’t too scared.
"Great Uncle’s Rocking Chair" by Jeanne G’Fellers
"Causing a Scene" by Anne G’Fellers-Mason
"The Salt Creek Valley Monkey Dog" by Edward Karshner

To write or not to write, the author dilemma of 2020. Certainly, life has become stranger than fiction, so eleven Appalachian authors gathered their courage and dug deep to present a flowing anthology of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry inspired by Covid-19 or rewritten during the pandemic. Here reside near-autobiographical tales of hardscrabble mountain education, plus familial and societal laments. Even a dragon hides amidst the pages. It’s a well-knit, often emotional read of reflection, eyeing our present, and looking ahead. All is not lost. No, some things have merely been Shelved.

A dozen handmade holiday ornaments, that’s all, but it might be an impossible task.
Centenary Rhodes and her mother are at constant odds. It’s one of the many reasons Cent left home when she was eighteen. Mama’s difficult for anyone to manage, but now that Cent’s back home, she has to try. Mama, however, won’t acknowledge who Cent’s become, even though she’s repeatedly been shown the truth.
It’ll take more than popcorn strings and paper snowflakes to heal the rift that’s formed between Cent and Mama. It’s going to take bushels of patience, heaps of magic, and assistance from everyone on both sides of Embreeville Mountain to reset the Balance between them.
But with Yule and Christmas just around the corner, it might already be too late.
Join Cent and her Mother for a heart-warming, magic-filled holiday tale of acceptance, family of choice, family of blood, love, magic, and patience all served with a queer Appalachian twist.

No Sister's Keeper

In a society divided by birth, upbringing, education and status, young Chandrey Brava is raised in a conservative sect, but leaves home at sixteen for the Taelach Training Grounds. Naïve and used to harsh discipline, she doesn’t recognize that Cancelynn Creiloff is playing with her heart.
Seeing Cance through a serious injury, Chandrey follows her to the Cleave, a sharply fundamental group being eroded from within by those who welcome the servitude of thralls. Cance’s increasingly vicious treatment of Chandrey raises eyebrows, but no more. Only her family can liberate her, unless she finds allies within the Cleave.
There may be one Taelach who can help her: the mysterious Belsas Exzal.
Bravery, resilience and stoic resistance are the hallmarks of this prequel to the award-winning No Sister of Mine.

LaRenna Belsas had always dreamed of the Kimshee life-style. These silent serving sisters of the Taelach military were known as much for their reckless mannerisms as they were honored for the dangers they faced bringing Taelach daughters to their raisers. LaRenna looked forward to taking her place among them, even though it meant an apprenticeship under an experienced Kimshee. Or would it?
"No Sister of Mine" is the first entry in a series of lesbian Science Fiction novels set in a world where humans are nothing more than a genetic trace. But that trace has left its mark-- namely a race of telepathic women who must fight to coexist with a patriarchal humanoid society who wishes nothing more than the eradication of its "white witch" cousins.
