"He met her in a bar in New York City the night before the Lockdown hit.
Outside the bar the downtown streets brayed with energy. Those who walked out there did so as a self-selecting crowd, willing to break curfew, risk arrest, fall down drunk, get laid, catch the God-damned Monkey Flu and die, all in one fell apocalyptic swoop.
It was the night before the pandemic closed down an unflinching pit bull of a city, with shelter-in-place orders two weeks old, and much stricter orders set to go into effect at 6 a.m. The bars closed at 4 a.m. in Manhattan. It felt like a sign to him, to her, to everyone who took their life in their hands to venture out into the dark and a reckless final night of freedom."

"Her given name was Kimiko Li-Poe, but all the kids in school called her Kimmie. The name seemed to embarrass her, and for good reason; it was a child's name attached to an awkward and uncertain twelve-year-old girl on the cusp of puberty. Kimmie solved the problem forever one night by trying to rip her face off with the shards of a broken mirror. After that they called her Veronica Scissors."

This all seems so familiar, she thinks to herself, looking across the expanse of just mopped hardwood floor. The curtain wrestling lazily with the breeze, the cat flicking her tail in and out of a shaft of sun, the note placed neatly on the kitchen table. She actually speaks it aloud—"so familiar," she says—before kicking the chair out from under her feet. The startled cat bolts from the room. The note glides gently to the spotless floor. The curtain dances on, oblivious.
We follow her as she befriends a troubled young woman in the motel room next door, encounters the woman’s abusive and wheelchair-bound boyfriend, and meets a brilliant homeless man named Donut. Through them, she becomes an unwitting witness to the vagaries of the methamphetamine trade.
The first three chapters were originally published in New York Press in 1994. The second chapter also appeared in Java Journal in the same year.
