Blog postI’m re-learning a lot these days. I’m tearing down facades and letting the scaffolding show. It reminds me that we don’t have to be pretty or finished to be strong, that we don’t have to be complete to be useful.
I’m showing up in this space again with just the simple intention of showing some of my scaffolding, and sharing some of my re-learning. I am giving myself permission to write while I’m in the middle of knowing, and not waiting until there is a message or a lesson I can8 months ago Read more -

Blog postLeyna – my 9 year old daughter- cried on my bed today about how boring this whole COVID-19 social distancing is. I feel for her and the rest of our kids. It really seems like Groundhog Day around here, and it’s so hard to come up with new and exciting things for them to look forward to. We rely on pizza takeout to mark the end of the week, and we try to find something “fun” to do each weekend.

Blog postThis wasn’t the COVID blog I planned. I was trying to pull together a bunch of resources for you all- things that would help you talk to your kids about social distancing, mental health advice for you, links to mask sellers, etc. I hope I get to do that post eventually.
But as it stands now, I can’t even find the time to empty my menstrual cup until it literally runs over and I’m like FUCKKKKKK COVID PERIODS!

Blog postLike all of my babies, Wallace didn’t have much hair for the first year of his life. In fact, I think he may have been the baldest of all 4. I never imagined in 3 years I’d be stressing about how to manage a full head of my kid’s curly hair.
I mean, I don’t have to stress. We could just cut it all off, but also, there’s no way we could! Look at this! It’s too beautiful.
Luckily, I happen to know a fantastic hair stylist who is a curl specialist and also my friend.1 year ago Read more -
Blog postShorter and colder days usually mean more time indoors, which can include binge-watching, getting caught up on online tasks, and even extra online shopping around here. I find it a little too easy to get stuck in front of a screen this time of year. And while I’m no fan of screen-time shaming, I am making an effort to be present with my family as much as I can in 2020.

Blog postDoes the internet need more breastfeeding advice? Maybe not, but I hope that this post at least shines a light on how breastfeeding “success” doesn’t look the same for everyone, not even for one person from baby to baby.
I didn’t know if I could make it 8 weeks breastfeeding my first baby in 2008, so the fact that I would go onto breastfed 4 babies for over 103 months (and counting!) would blow my 27-year-old mind back then. That’s assuming it survived the explosion from finding out I1 year ago Read more -
Blog post“He didn’t nap at all today. Is there a secret to getting him to sleep?”
“Well, to be quite honest, he has spent most of his life going down for a nap with me or his dad. I mean, sometimes he’ll fall asleep on his own if we ignore him long enough. And sometimes I still breastfeed him at nap? So it could just be that he needs to get used to this new routine. No real secret.”

Blog postI worked part-time at a baby boutique while I was pregnant with my first baby- for the discount. Obviously. There were other perks, though. One was that I got to talk to a lot of other pregnant and new moms. I got to see them stroll through the stores with their babies, or chase their toddlers before they tried to dash out the door.

Blog postMy to-do list for nearly all of 2019 started with one simple task- blog. Blogging got me through the last decade. It kept me grounded and sane, and it gave me an incredible community. It was never a “task” before, but last year it became the most daunting to-do.
I didn’t dread the researched search engine optimized blog posts and the campaigns for brands nearly as much as the posts where I knew I needed to simply share a bit of myself here. And so, quite often, I didn’t complete1 year ago Read more -
Blog post“Look out! I’m coming! My car is so fast!”
“My gwo-shee store has a con-bey-or belt!”
These are actual sentences my toddler said just yesterday, along with so many more. He talks ALL THE TIME now.
He didn’t always. In fact, he didn’t start talking more than one or two words at a time until about 6 months ago. This time last year, I was a little worried his speech was delayed and that he wasn’t hitting his toddler language milestones.

Blog postThis video is super late, I know. Christmas was well over a month ago, but I hope you’ll still enjoy this peek into our festivities!
We tried on a small house for a few days, and not only was it a comfy place to spread out for Christmas, it was also a great way to see how a house that size would work for us. We LOVED it!
Our wheels have been turning since. Could we get a smaller (relatively, of course, compared to the 4k sq ft house we sold) home- maybe something older that we2 years ago Read more -
Blog postYears before Scott and I got married we went to Colonial Williamsburg. It was one of those experiences that we felt like would be richer when we had kids, and it’s long been on our list of places to take our family- since before we ever had one of our own.
Once we decided last fall to head south for Christmas from DC, instead of west to the Smoky Mountains, we knew we would try to take the kids to Williamsburg, VA on our way to the Carolinas.

We’re tired. It was exhausting. Why do kids always need to be fed?
It was not our greatest day, but I honestly think we will remember it fondly years from now.

Blog postExperiences, not things. That’s becoming a popular proclamation this holiday season, at least on my personal social feeds.
To me, it sometimes feels a little trite and cliche this time of year, and before I get any further I’m going to tell you this is not a post meant to shame you for buying your kids Christmas gifts.

Blog postNew York City was a destination we were all looking forward to the whole year and it almost didn’t happen! Our budget was really tight at the beginning of November, but we thought our NYC trip would happen as part of a project I was hired for. Unfortunately, that all fell apart at the very, very last minute. Like literally the day we were supposed to check into our hotel.

Blog postOver the course of 48 hours last week, we felt both ends of the experience spectrum that we’ve come to know on this trip.
On Thursday, we set out for Diggerland USA, a construction theme park in West Berlin, New Jersey. We have been waiting for this day for a really long time, long before we even planned to do this trip. Lowell has been infatuated with all things construction or “Mighty Machines,” as he calls them, since he was old enough to push a toy truck.

Blog postAs we close in on a year being out of the house, we are starting to wrap up our last of the “firsts.” This was our first Halloween on the road, and it was a one of those magical days that makes this life feel deeply rewarding. When else, in what other situation, could a friend text me and say, “Hey! No pressure, but if you’re going to be near us, you should come trick-or-treating with us,” and when else could we say YES to that when that friend lives in Connecticut?

Blog postEarlier this year we had a really awesome profile piece on Lifehacker about “How I Parent” as a Roadschooling mom. I knew it was coming because I’d been interviewed for it, though I, admittedly, didn’t realize how big that platform was when I was quickly and not that thoughtfully typing out the answers to my questions. When people started congratulating me for the feature the day it went live, and remarking how cool it was, I got so excited to go read it. I noticed there were already 36 comme2 years ago Read more
