Jonah Hex: Tall Tales collects issues 55 - 60 of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti's definitive take on DC's scarred bounty hunter from the Old West. As always, they do a damn fine job of transporting the reader into the world of Jonah Hex, which is filled with human cruelty, betrayel, insane gunfights, psychopathic outlaws, thievery and death in all its many forms. Jonah strides through these stories as an invincible gunfighter who seems to shed his honor as easily as a snake sheds its skin when the occasion demands it. Gray and Palmiotti have written a true anti-hero, an irredeemable character who lives life by his own rules and relishes the dangers bounty-hunting brings. In other words, for those familiar with Jonah, you will find nothing new in these pages, except for some original twists on stories that are par for the course for any Hex book. In one issue we get a rare glimpse into Hex's childhood, while another reveals his surprising detective skills. No overarching story appears, and all the issues feature stories that wrap themselves up nicely. The art is also a rare treat, and the Jordi Bernet issue is especially well done. The rest of the tales are pencilled by a host of artists who all do a decent job. So since I am so obviously singing this collection's praises, why the four stars? Well, the best I can explain it is that I actually felt as if I wanted a longer story to give Hex a bit more drama and up the stakes a little rather than the usual 'collecting bounties' stand-alone issues. Still, this should not deter you from buying the book, especially if you're a newcomer to the world of Hex, because any story can be used as a jumping-on point without any prior knowledge of the main character and what makes him tick. So go out and buy this one, and lose yourself in the bullets and the blood that make Jonah Hex the greatest Old West comic character of all time.

I have grown into an enthusiastic fan of Jonah Hex. I had never heard of him before I saw the movie, being unaware he was a DC comic character long before the movie came out. In any case, I now have purchased and read numerous graphic novels and short stories with Jonah Hex. This fantastic volume, Jonah Hex: Tall Tales, has six interesting stories with plenty of western action.

The first story "The brief life of Billy dynamite" is about a young boy who sees his mother killed and is befriended by Jonah Hex. The second tale is one of my favorites. An old Indian woman named Porivo hires Jonah and the end of the story made me laugh. The other stories in this collection include: Frist True Love, Tall Tales and Riders on the Storm. Every Bullet tells a Story and Blood Lies Bleeding. In all of these stories there is a message which is clear. You do not mess with Jonah Hex because he plays judge, jury and executioner. In the real world evil thugs do not always receive the punishment they deserve. However, the bad guys always receive their just due in Jonah Hex's world. This is probably one of the reasons he has become so popular.

Another great collection of stories for the Jonah Hex fan. In this collection Jonah tackles a horse, encourages minors to play with guns AND explosives and then takes on some very unhappy confederate soldiers who feel a guy wearing his full confederate uniform several years AFTER losing the war is not “southern” enough. They had me at “tackle”.
