About the author

Hi, I've been living, studying and training in Japan for over 15 years. My goal is to share some of the cool, fascinating and mysterious teachings that can be found in Japanese martial arts manuals. For the most part these books have never been translated before. Thanks for your interest!

This volume offers the original author's mash-up of six styles of jujutsu, with throws, locks, chokes, and ground applications. Mr. Shahan compiled various elements of what had served as a correspondence course. "Ware (you) and Teki (opponent)" stand in for "Tori and Uke."
The book clearly lays of grips, lifts, and positioning, proceeds through sweeps, reaps, wheel throws, hip-shoulder-body throws, chokes, neck cranks and ground fighting. Many of the throws and holds would be banned from modern competitions. There's even an interesting "crab choke," which could be accomplished after maneuvering or a slam, with the opponent ("teki") with his legs splayed backwards over his head while you ("ware") finish with a collar choke.
The book offers an interesting final "kenpo" section, which consists only of stick-figure renderings, a listing of basic strikes and striking points, and stances. However, there's not much here. That's a shame because the original atemi waza techniques are interesting and offer a high-percentage striking system to set up, and to counter, grappling techniques. These blows rarely employ the commitment or movement found in boxing because they're meant to support a grappling flow.
I look forward to Mr. Shahan's translation of an accompanying "dragon scroll," the explanatory companion volume to this work.
