Jamie McFarlane is a graduate of Colorado School of Mines with a Master of Science in Mathematics. An avid reader, tinkerer, woodworker and metal sculptor, Jamie is just as likely to be seen smelting aluminum cans in his garage as he is tacking random, discarded iron objects into a small army of beasties that adorn his home’s landscaping.

Jamie’s writing career began as something of a dare which later turned into a tribute. In his late teens, Jamie was well known as the family story-teller, spinning fanciful yarns about ordinary events, usually with the objective of escaping well-deserved trouble. One day, his mother, often the target of his mischievous tales, challenged him to commit his words to writing. Jamie promised he would but time passed, as did his beloved mother. In 2014, Jamie made good on his promise and published his first book.

Jamie is the author of a growing library of novels and novellas including the space opera series - Privateer Tales, and the urban fantasy series - Witchy World. Jamie lives in Lincoln, Nebraska with his wife and enjoys spending time with family and friends.

I was about 25 when my grandfather died of lung cancer, he was born around 1914 I think. He was a farmer all his life and was one of the first farmers in his area to get a plane and start crop dusting, that would have been in the late 1930's I believe. I saw a photo of him with his plane looking to be about 25 or 30. When WW2 started he wanted to join the airforce but was told farmers were needed more. He broke his back during the war, trying to move something heavy by himself because all the young men were at war. Back then they used morphine for pain killer, the doctors took a sliver of bone from his thigh to fuse the broken vertebra and kept him in traction on morphine for months. He said getting off morphine was the hardest thing he ever did, he was in pain the rest of his life and started drinking quite a lot after that. My mother often said she wished we could have known him before the accident, grumpy gramps who drank too much was the only one we knew. When he was diagnosed he stopped drinking, he was back on painkillers and was a very different person. Not angry, or grumpy, or short-tempered. He was very thoughtful and philosophical about it all.
When he died my thought was that life is too short, just when people are gaining the wisdom of a lifetime and the perspective to use it life is over. Now I'm nearly the age he was when he died.

So this book about a few old codgers who get a second chance to use the wisdom and skills of a lifetime to save the world was awesome! I don't mean to imply this book is only for other old codgers, it's "fun for all ages." McFarlane is great at creating likable characters and easing the reader into implausible situations in a very believable way.

I can't wait to see what happens next!

OK, but sexist as hell

The writing is generally good, the plot premise is ok, But man, get ready for some increasingly sexist perspectives. Women are refered to as girls and are atraccted to sexist ass slaping ww2 vets. Women majors in top secret facilities are less capible than men and need rescuing by a man. Made it 3/4 of the way through waiting for some kind of turnaround, quit when it just kept getting worse. It would be easier to swallow if anyone was calling out the bad behavior, but it never happens.

But I struggled reading this book. It felt...thin. Like the characters didn’t really have depth. They said the right things, but it was a superficial understanding. As if even the main characters were secondary. They kept telling me who they were instead of *being*.

There was also quite a bit of MarySue happening. Where exactly did an automatic weapon come from?!? Why didn’t the Beltigerskians dominate the internet and fund whatever they needed?

I *really* liked the Privateer series. This had some promise, but was poorly written. It reads like cheap SF.

As a Vietnam Era helicopter gunship pilot, I really related to the irascible hero of this book. Jamie pretty well captured the personality of most of the guys I flew with. This is a fun book that's hard to put down, as are most of his books. Likable characters, great dialog and no clue what's going to happen next. I'm looking forward to this series. I highly recommend this book.

Junkyard Pirate's concept is a unique view of first contact. When threatened by galactic parasitic bullies a bunch of old vets and alien symbiotes become allies and demonstrate humanity's resolve on a grand scale. So much happens in this first book in a new series. Looking forward to the next installment. While this book is quite a departure from Jamie McFarlane's other space opera it is well worth taking a chance on.

Fast ride on a wish fulfillment train

For an old busted up Marine nam vet like me, this is wish fulfillment at its best.
AJ is an old vet, also a Marine (Ooorah!) who is hobbling through his later life running a junkyard and drinking himself to death since his wife died. When he buys a load of used missile hulls to salvage he gets a bit more than he expected and the fun begins!
A solidly written fun story that grabbed me from the start and didn't let up to the end (for now) pedal to the metal all the way.
Hopefully there's more to come because this is too much fun. Old crusty jarhead and friends meet vast alien civilizations, oh yeah! Rock on AJ!

I have had the pleasure of reading many, many of Jamie McFarlane's books. This one was creative, with a new twist on aliens working together and of course against humanity.

I enjoyed it a great deal, I deducted a star, for F bombs. This was the first McFarlane story with such vulgarity. Normally, at the first F l'm out. It is a tribute to the story that I finished it. However, if I find this trend to continue I will stop reading his creative works. I will be disappointed, but I have enough vulgar language in my life teaching teenagers, to pay for it in my relaxation reading.

I picked this series because of the name "Junkyard Pirate" because I read the two Scrapyard Ship series (by Mark wayne mcginnis). In this book I got hooked by the rocket junk, AJ being a Vietnam vet like me; and, Beverly because she at first was like the fairy that hung out with Hardy in the USS Hamilton series; although BB is a hologram with a cool ever changing wardrobe Then the fun begins. AJ, the doc and Darnell have a great adventure in Mexico. What's really cool is that in spite of all the trouble they get into, the banter between them is funny. It's a great story and the levity makes lots of fun. I haven't seen such comradery and laughed so much at the way AJ handles the problems since I read Lindsay Buroker's Star Kingdom series. Here the team goes to Area 51, racoon meets racoon and AJ fulfills his promise to show Jayne the stars. Great stuff this story is made of. Enjoy...

The story gets off to a good start with some funny dialogue between the aliens and the humans. The rejuvenating symbiosis adds depth and it bowls along quite well until they *go on the mission* . At this point it becomes a bit of a car chase/goodies vs baddies vehicle and the holes in the plot start to pile up. Probably more a young adult fiction than mature SF, but I did at least finish it.

Relateable human cast that you are rooting for, likeable and loath-able aliens, technology thats advanced but within the realms of being believable and the coolest bulldog you could hope to meet...looking forwards to part 2 immensely.

McFarlane seems to have successfully brought Hal Clement's Needle into the 21st century, with more than enough added twists, turns and subplots to make it his own. I read the whole thing in a single sitting and now I'm 2 hours late for lunch!
Here's hoping book 2 does a similarly good job at keeping me occupied for the duration!
