Just Listen: Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone Kindle Edition
|New from||Used from|
Getting through to someone is a critical, fine art. Whether you are dealing with a harried colleague, a stressed-out client, or an insecure spouse, things will go from bad to worse if you can't break through emotional barricades and get your message thoroughly communicated and registered.
Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist, business consultant, and coach, author Mark Goulston combines his background with the latest scientific research to help you turn the “impossible” and “unreachable” people in their lives into allies, devoted customers, loyal colleagues, and lifetime friends.
In Just Listen, Goulston provides simple yet powerful techniques you can use to really get through to people including how to:
- make a powerful and positive first impression;
- listen effectively;
- make even a total stranger (potential client) feel understood;
- talk an angry or aggressive person away from an instinctual, unproductive reaction and toward a more rational mindset;
- and achieve buy-in--the linchpin of all persuasion, negotiation, and sales.
Whether they're coworkers, friends, strangers, or enemies, the first make-or-break step in persuading anyone to do anything is getting them to hear you out. The invaluable principles in Just Listen will get you through that first tough step with anyone.
With this groundbreaking book, you will be able to master the fine but critical art of effective communication.

As you could imagine, communicating with everyone was very challenging.
Not to mention the Complexity and Stress of today's Fast-Paced lifestyle, just adds to the problem.
This was a recipe for disaster... on the way to becoming another statistic (Fatherless children with a stressed mother).
I'm only 60% through this book and already it's CHANGE MY LIFE!
I'm able to understand (listen to) everyone and convey a better message through the techniques in this book.
My Wife - who doesn't know - has been able to keep a better composure as a result.
She's skeptical about Psychiatric Techniques, so it's been hard for me to share the details outlined in this book.
All in all, I highly recommend "Just Listen" for ANYONE who wants to know How To Get Through to People.
THANK YOU DR. MARK GOULSTON!
Although I do believe the author’s intentions are in the right place, many of the tips seem very manipulative and more focused on what you can “get out of another person” and what’s in it for you - rather than coming from a place of authenticity and truly wanting to connect with others and listen more out of a place of genuine love and concern to know them better. This was disappointing.
Loved that Dr. Mark presents the methods in real-life story/scenario problems and situations. He explains what to say in various situations such as dealing with an angry or frustrated spouse or child, a jealous co-worker, lazy and uncooperative co-workers, a supervisor/boss, even how to get through to secretaries screening calls to the VIP/CEO in very simple vernacular.
My favorite chapter was Chapter 19: From Transaction to Transformation because I'm more of a transactional-type of guy but so very much want to be a transformational and relational type of person. This chapter helps me to make that 'transformation' and I'm going to re-read this book over again in the near future.
The methods are very simple to apply and use. One only needs to have enough courage to try them out.
There are 3 basic rules that Dr. Mark points out:
1. Make people feel interesting
2. Make people feel important
3. Above all, make them "Feel Felt."
Thank you, Dr. Mark for writing this outstanding book and sharing your stories and methods. I hope this review makes you 'feel felt,' because I could feel felt from the first to the last page.
For everyone else: you will need to buy this book and read it thoroughly to get the maximum benefit ... I highly recommend this book and therefore will leave you to purchase it to find out the rest of the great methods described.

It also has extremely powerful anecdotes throughout that happen extremely quickly, when in reality the same techniques will rarely have such twin efficacies when we attempt them. So what makes the book exciting, powerful and uplifting is predicated on a great sales pitch with optimally perfect examples.
It gives very practical advice and I can definitely say that you don't need to be too deep into psychology or neuroscience to benefit from it given its written for business practitioners.
The title peaked curiosity in my mind.
There were 3 specific things I liked about the book:
1. The style of writing was very conversational.
2. The ideas were really well illustrated with practical examples and stories.
3. There were specific ways suggested on how to implement.
I like career coaching books and books about psychology but I did not enjoy this one. In fact, I left it half way through.
Marks Goultons words now pop up in my head at every meeting, and since then
I get even better results. Learning to really listen, and not using daydreaming as a
safety escape route takes some energy. But it's worth it!
