Blog postPicture book cements vocabulary as kids tell the story
MIDVALE, Utah – Sometimes kids want to tell the story. Today they can — guided by author and media professor Karl Beckstrand’s concepts and art by Jordan C. Brun. Beckstrand’s 23rd book, “Gopher Golf: A Wordless Picture Book,” depicts the joy — and trials — a couple of gophers feel while golfing (with help from other critters).
“Children love to make up stories,” says Beckstrand of his third wordless book, which includes a2 weeks ago Read more -

A black child and grandfather till, plant, and harvest fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, and grains in a colorful picture book. Blog postAs publishers in perhaps the most competitive genre there is (children’s books), we seek to make our offerings stand out from the average kid’s book. Our story books have multicultural and biracial characters, online secrets/bonus material, and language or STEM learning disguised as entertaining/humorous stories with (typically) twisted or surprise endings.
We have been gratified that our picture books continue to be ordered by libraries, schools, and families via major distributors.6 months ago Read more -

Blog postKeynote address given by publisher Karl Beckstrand to the Utah Educational Library Media Association, Weber State University, 6 March 2020
How important is it that kids see themselves in books?
I’m no childhood development expert; I hope you can look past any incorrect terminology I may use and hear what I hope to convey regarding inclusion.

Blog postLast year, I surprised myself by creating 17 new multicultural products. This year I got help from amazing authors—and am pleased to announce that Premio Publishing & Gozo Books now offers Young Adult Science Fiction, Y.A. Fantasy, Middle-grade, Reference, and Curricula. These are in addition to our Spanish-English picture books with pronunciation guide, e-book mysteries for kids, nonfiction/biographies, romance, western, short stories, humor, wordless books, and STEM activity books.

Blog postI’ve finished creating my 2020 multicultural children’s books catalog. I really thought I’d been a slacker in 2019, but—HOLY GUACAMOLE—turns out, I created 17 new products this year (for a total of 130 since 2004)!
Publishing sure has changed! It used to be that getting books to readers required the vast resources of a major publishing house. Today, technology has almost leveled the playing field. While I currently reside and work in (practically) unheard of Midvale, Utah, my books ar1 year ago Read more -

Blog postAudiobook sales have jumped 37 percent since 2017, according to the Association of American Publishers. Now busy people can hear an award winning western thriller while on the go. To Swallow the Earth, the novel I co-wrote with my grandfather (and which won an International Book Award), has been available in paperback and e-book formats for a couple of years. Now it transports busy listeners to rough Nevada Silver Rush days as they travel or commute.

Blog postMy 22nd book, It Came from under the High Chair: A Mystery, almost never got published. I thought the concept of a monster made of spilled food might be too disgusting. Then I saw all those best-selling bathroom/gross humor books and figured the world was ready for my 20-year-old idea. Plus, it’s educational.

I think kids don’t mind learning if they are being entertained. This children’s picture book teaches parts of speech—namely, prepositions. The bilingual2 years ago Read more -

Blog postMy mom was an avid genealogist. As a child I found the dry dates and names boring (and I certainly didn’t want to look for them on ancient microfilm reader machines!).
But in 2007, a publisher asked me to write a children’s picture book about an immigrant child. I remembered that my great-great aunt had immigrated as a ten year old from Sweden and had a remarkable experience when she arrived. Her story was found in her short autobiography and in my great grandmother’s journal. The hyb2 years ago Read more -
Blog postIt seems I’m not alone in having trouble sleeping. As a child I experienced frightening bumps in the night—and an active imagination. Some of my experiences were comical (or, at least, became comical with the passage of time) like being too exhausted to sleep, mosquitoes that buzz the ear before dining, creaking pipes, and bizarre or bad dreams.
Lately I’m kept awake more from restless legs or an overactive brain. The worst thing for sleep is forgetting to silence or turn off my phone2 years ago Read more -

What if you returned from a journey and your family was gone? What if someone else was living in your home, running what you used to manage—and trying to kill you? You’ll love this story for the genuine conflict (and mistakes) a person lives with when they don’t have all the facts.
Wade Forester must stay in the shadows or be shot. His father has disappeared, and his sister won’t speak. Beautiful Patricia Laughlin is running the show. Few people gain her approval, though powerful landowner Bridger Calhoun has high hopes. Each in his/her corner; Wade must decide whether to risk his life for Patricia, Bridger must win Patricia’s heart, and Patricia must choose which killer to trust with her life.
Survival/suspense set in the historic Nevada silver rush; the writing comes from intimate knowledge of the territory. Having lived off the land, Wilcox depended on his wit, grit, and strength (and his animals) for survival, just as his characters do. Wilcox and Beckstrand weave authentic detail and care for the country and its creatures into an adventure that will make your heart pound and fill your lungs with the rarefied air of the old Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Stand alone with bonus short story. Family friendly (ages 14 & up); 54,000 words, 200 pages, 5.25”x8” paperback; Latino protagonist, American Indian man, woman. Simultaneously published as A Sky So Big (New Adult mystery romance/YA western novel), also a clean audiobook and ebook—soon a graphic novel. Written by award-winning author Ransom Wilcox (Horse & Dog Adventures in Early California) and media professor Karl Beckstrand (The Bridge of the Golden Wood: A Parable on How to Earn a Living). A Sky So Big: A Romantic Adventure
May 25, 2015
$6.95
(Clean western) Winner: 2016 International Book Award, 2016 Laramie Award finalist, and Literary Classics Seal of Approval. What if you returned from a journey and your family was gone, someone else was living in your house—and trying to kill you?
Is the drifter her ally or her enemy? A gusty woman and a Latino man, both searching for missing family, clash amid a Nevada silver rush scheme that leaves each unsure who to trust—and scrambling to stay alive. You’ll love this story for the genuine conflict (and mistakes) a person lives with when they don’t have all the facts.
Set in the historic Nevada silver rush, the writing comes from intimate knowledge of the territory. Having lived off the land, Wilcox depended on his wit, grit, and strength (and his animals) for survival—just as his characters do. He and Beckstrand weave authentic detail, care for the terrain and its creatures, and folksy vernacular into a romantic mystery that will make your heart pound and fill your lungs with the rarefied air of the old Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Stand alone with bonus short story. Diverse characters, family safe (ages 14 & up), 54,000 words, 200 pages, 5.25”x8” paperback, strong female protagonist, Latino character, American Indian. Simultaneously published as To Swallow the Earth (New Adult/Y.A. survival western, also a Young Adult audiobook and ebook—soon a graphic novel). Written by award-winning author Ransom Wilcox (Horse & Dog Adventures in Early California) and media professor Karl Beckstrand (Anna’s Prayer: The True Story of an Immigrant Girl). Click Karl Beckstrand above for 60 more multicultural stories. Cover by Mike Condie.
