About the Author

Dr. Kate Biberdorf, also known as Kate the Chemist by her fans, is a science professor at UT-Austin by day and a science superhero by night (well, she does that by day, too). Kate travels the country building a STEM army of kids who love science as much as she does. You can often find her breathing fire or making slime--always in her lab coat and goggles. You can visit Kate on Instagram and Facebook @KatetheChemist, on Twitter @K8theChemist, and online at --This text refers to the paperback edition.

Hi! My name is Dr. Kate Biberdorf, but most people call me Kate the Chemist. You can usually find me teaching classes in Austin, Texas, or setting off explosions on national TV. Last year, I published my first nonfiction book (The Big Book of Experiments), which contained 25 at-home experiments, including one of my favorites, Edible Snot. People loved that demo so much that my inbox exploded with requests for more experiments that can be done in the kitchen—so I set off on a flour-filled adventure to create 25 new EDIBLE science experiments.

From Unicorn Sugar Cookies to Dragon Cupcakes, every protocol is packed full of chemistry. Do you know what chemistry is, besides being the best science in the entire world? It’s the study of energy and matter, and their interactions with each other. Like how the proteins in our flour react with the sugars in our dough to give us a brown pretzel, or how salt can lower the temperature of a milk mixture to give us ice cream (two things I show you how to do in this book)!

Each experiment can be done with materials that your parents or guardians probably already have in their pantry (like sugar, baking soda, and food coloring). But the best part is, unlike my last book, you can actually eat every single one of these final products! Chemistry is everywhere in the kitchen, which is why I had so much fun creating all of these recipes for you. So what are you waiting for? Call your bestie, grab your apron—it’s time for kitchen chemistry!

Dr. Kate Biberdorf is breaking stereotypes and blowing stuff up—all in a good pair of heels. Through her theatrical and hands-on approach to teaching, Dr. Biberdorf is breaking down the image of the stereotypical scientist, while reaching students that might otherwise be intimidated by science. Students’ emotional responses, rather than rote memorization of facts, is key to Biberdorf ’s dynamic approach to her program, as well as science in general. Her exciting and engaging program leaves audiences with a positive, memorable impression of science – all while diminishing the stigma around women in science.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and educational!
By C on May 31, 2021
We have already tried 6 or 7 of these experiments; and have enjoyed both the learning process and the tasty results!

Each experiment begins with "A note from Kate" which usually details the author's personal experiences with the food in that experiment. Then a "Messiness Level" is given on a scale of 1 – 3. It might have been helpful to include a time estimate though, as some of these took longer than we had anticipated.

While we had most of the ingredients for most of the experiments, we did need to pick up a few things, and some of them were hard to find (lye for the pretzel bites - we weren't actually able to get it and had to modify the experiment). There are no alternatives or substitutions suggested, which could be problematic for people with food sensitivities or special diets, so you might have to get creative.

Overall a good experience though, as kids of different ages all enjoyed these experiments. The younger ones had fun making a mess and enjoyed the tasty food, while the older ones thought some of the science was pretty interesting, and also enjoyed eating their creations! It was a good exercise to slow down and think about the science behind some everyday activities.
